Yet I often hear the debate about how much screen time is appropriate for students. Screen time refers to the amount of time spent in front of and interacting with a device with a screen. While we want to develop skills in our students so they can use cutting edge technology and be digitally literate, at what cost do we sacrifice face-to-face time with family and friends, or simply playing outside?"

New study in Pediatrics confirms that care for at-risk youth and Net-safety messaging need to map to public health's levels of prevention

"...a child’s psychosocial makeup and home and school environments are better predictors of online risk than any particular technology s/he uses; and that youth who engage in aggressive behavior online are at least twice as likely to be victimized online..."

Instagram now lets you "Add People" (tag) to photos (Source: Instagram video) Instagram today introduced its new "Photos of You" feature that allows users to tag people in photos.

Students as young as 7 and 8 have created an Instagram account even though the Instagram TOS clearly states users have to be 13. Parents may or may not be aware that their child is signing up.  Mostly likely, young children are not concerned about their privacy settings.

"As a Digital Learning Specialist, I once thought I had the edge over my children when it came to new technology and the Internet. When my oldest daughter expressed an interest in Facebook, my husband and I helped her set up an account. She friended us, and we were there to guide her through the do’s and don'ts of online etiquette. With this experience behind me, I certainly felt ready to help my next two children one day take this leap into adolescence. Yet this wasn’t how it played out. With mobile devices in hand, my younger children recently set up Instagram accounts without me (yes, Facebook is passé). Who needs Mom when you have an older sister and friends?"
