Dr. Beverly Wright: Growing Up in Cancer Alley | Environmental Justice

Dr. Beverly Wright: Growing Up in Cancer Alley | Environmental Justice | Raising Cain | Scoop.it

My journey towards understanding environmental justice began during my early years growing up in the area known as ‘cancer alley’ in Louisiana. After I learned about the disparties of pollution problems in poorer neighborhoods and neighborhoods of color, people who looked like me, I dedicated my life to overcoming these injustices.

Paul Verhaeghe: Neoliberalism has brought out the worst in us

Paul Verhaeghe: Neoliberalism has brought out the worst in us | Raising Cain | Scoop.it
We tend to perceive our identities as stable and largely separate from outside forces. But over decades of research and therapeutic practice, I have become convinced that economic change is having a profound effect not only on our values but also on our personalities. Thirty years of neoliberalism, free-market forces and privatisation have taken their toll, as relentless pressure to achieve has become normative. If you’re reading this sceptically, I put this simple statement to you: meritocratic neoliberalism favours certain personality traits and penalises others.

Coeur d'Alene Cancel Ted Nugent Concert Over Rocker's 'Racist Remarks'

Coeur d'Alene Cancel Ted Nugent Concert Over Rocker's 'Racist Remarks' | Raising Cain | Scoop.it

Ted Nugent was booked to play a concert at the Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort Hotel in Worley, Idaho, on August 4 -- but the show has been canceled due to concern over what the tribe called the rocker's "racist and hate-filled remarks."

The cancellation came on the heels of an article published by the Southern Poverty Law Center's Hatewatch blog on Monday morning. Hatewatch contacted Heather Keen, a public relations official for the tribe, who seemed to be caught off guard by the news that Nugent had been booked. "I’m going to have to check and see what happened here," she said. "Obviously, something may have fallen through the cracks."

The Palestinians Who Are Channeling Rage Into Nonviolent Resistance

Conflict has erupted in Israel and Palestine after the discovery of the bodies of three Israeli teenagers early last week, whom the Israelis say were kidnapped by Hamas. The Western media, for its part, has focused on the street battles between young Palestinians and the Israeli military, rushing to print photos of young Palestinian men throwing rocks and of masked Hamas militants armed at a press conference. However, these images are far from the whole story. On the ground Palestinian groups are acting to turn this rage into long-lasting nonviolent organizing.

Tenn. Lawmakers Join GOP Attack On 'Revisionist' AP US History Exam - Raising Cain... | Raising Cain | Scoop.it

The Republican National Committee in August voted to condemn the new framework and the College Board's "radically revisionist view of American history that emphasizes negative aspects of our nation's history while omitting or minimizing positive aspects."

via talkingpointsmemo.com

Cathie Bird's insight:

I took some time today to read some of the course and exam description of this "new framework" -- it is fairly explicit about some ideas that have been left out of history classes far too long, for example, development of a "rigid racial hierarchy" in the United States, and exploitation of people who were already here when European colonists showed up.

If you follow links in the article you can get to a number of articles/documents that reveal both sides of the question to explore some of this material for yourself. I hope people will not stop at the surface arguments being raised in TN and elsewhere. We need a fresh analysis that uses new ways of thinking, not the old belief systems that perpetuate mindless, heartless oppression. It's time to dig deep for the buried treasures of history and bring them into the light.

Decrying "Brutal Operation Taking Place in Our Name," Israeli Military Reservists Refuse to Serve

Decrying "Brutal Operation Taking Place in Our Name," Israeli Military Reservists Refuse to Serve | Raising Cain | Scoop.it
As Israel pledges to continue the assault on Gaza for "as long as is required," we are joined by two Israelis who have refused to serve in their country’s military reserves. On Tuesday, The Washington Post ran an open letter authored by Yael Even Or titled "We are Israeli reservists. We refuse to serve," announcing that more than 50 former Israeli soldiers have signed a petition declaring their refusal to be part of the Israeli military reserves. "This petition, long in the making, has a special urgency because of the brutal military operation now taking place in our name," Even Or writes. An Israeli journalist and activist who evaluated candidates for the Israeli army’s recruitment department during her service, Even Or is now a graduate student in international affairs at The New School in New York City. She join us to discuss the reservists’ letter. We are also joined from Tel Aviv by Yonatan Shapira, a former Israeli captain and Air Force pilot, who in 2003 spearheaded a letter signed by 27 Israeli pilots who refused to participate in military operations against Palestinians.

Israel's Strategy and America's Mythology

Israel's Strategy and America's Mythology | Raising Cain | Scoop.it

Bombs are falling and people are dying in Gaza. It's headline news in America's mass media. As usual, though, we get only today's events, with no historical context to explain what's really going on and why.

The crucial piece of history our mass media ignore is that one basic principle has always guided Israel's foreign policy: Keep the perceived enemies divided; never let them unite.
