Rainy Day Storytime
This storytime plan is intended for a group of 3-4 year old children. Rain is a subject that children will be familiar with, and while it's a theme that can be used anytime, it is especially good for springtime. I chose two fairly simple, yet engaging and vibrant books to use for read-alouds, and included activities and crafts that tied in with the books.

In this storytime, children will become familiar with the sounds made by the rain and hopefully grasp the very basics of onomatopoeia. It will also emphasize rhyming and repetition as well as encourage creativity, counting and color identification. There were so many fun options for rain-themed books that I would also create a display of books for children to peruse/check out with their parents after the storytime ends.

Rain Rain Go Away

Rain Rain Go Away | Rainy Day Storytime | Scoop.it

Rain Rain Go Away with a simple twist adding family vocabulary."

Theresa Tangney's insight:

I would use this for an introductory song.  The group would sing this to each child in the group, substituting their name in the song each time.  This would be a fun way to begin the storytime and for the kids to all feel included and more familiar with each other.  I would also have the children pass around a small, homemade rainstick (kraft paper mailing tube with a few nails poked through, decorated and filled with rice) as their turn came around so they could hear the sounds of the rain, since sounds will be heavily focused on throughout this storytime.

catch the possibilities: Flannel Friday: Five Umbrellas | Rainy Day Storytime | Scoop.it
Theresa Tangney's insight:

This is a simple flannel board activity that ties into the rain theme. The story that goes along with it helps children practice basic counting skills, color identification and rhyme. After the rhyme is done, children can be provided with their own raindrop to put up on the board with the umbrellas to "create a rainstorm" and make the activity more interactive/energetic.

Rainy Day Collage

Rainy Day Collage | Rainy Day Storytime | Scoop.it
You don't need to make this Rainy Day Collage only on a rainy day, it's a great craft for spring time or when learning about the weather. A great craft for Preschoolers and kindergarteners!
Theresa Tangney's insight:

This craft could be done at the end of the storytime, or easily turned into a take-home craft if there wasn't time. I would pre-assemble and attach the umbrella and pipe cleaner, and then the children could decorate the umbrella as well as glue on pom poms for raindrops. This would be a good outlet for their creativity at the end of a storytime session.

Theresa Tangney's insight:

This book includes great visuals of a rainy day, and follows a child and an older man through their day in the city. It shows different emotions that can be brought on from the rain; the little boy enjoys playing in the rain, while the older man is frustrated by the weather. In the end, the grumpy man is cheered up by the little boy returning his hat. I chose to include this story for the lesson it teaches (that someone can be cheered up by an act of kindness), as well as its inclusion of basic rhymes.

Theresa Tangney's insight:

This book has a large focus on onomatopoeia as well as rhyming, and introduces children to a range of phonics concepts.  It also includes a little rain/mud puddle song that would be simple enough that children could sing along (and what child doesn't like mud puddles?).  It also includes some basic weather concepts, like clouds disappating and the sun coming out again.
