Google's Tech in your classroom - Help Stop Deforestation with Global Forest Watch

Google's Tech in your classroom - Help Stop Deforestation with Global Forest Watch | Rainforest CLASSROOM: Inspiration, Resources, and More | Scoop.it

Deforestation has long been cited as a problem, but a lack of accessible data meant that the general public had to take someone's word for the figures. As a result, its threat always seemed more abstract and nebulous than, say, climate change or rising sea levels.

Until now: Google has unveiled its Global Forest Watch, an online tool that monitors deforestation around the world in near-real time.

Via Lauren Moss
Amazon Rainforest Workshops's insight:

A great new tool to use when integrating tech into your classroom.  Want to understand global forest decline and contribute to the conversation...this might be the tool for yoU!

Antonio Lopez's curator insight, February 28, 2014 6:05 AM

One role of media should be to act like those speed monitors we see that tell us how fast we are going. Hopefully a program like Google's Global Forest Watch can help us monitor deforestation in real time.

LUCIO'S LEGACY:  The Amazon Binocular Project

LUCIO'S LEGACY:  The Amazon Binocular Project | Rainforest CLASSROOM: Inspiration, Resources, and More | Scoop.it

The Amazon Binocular Project was launched barely a month before Lucio Pando, our friend, mentor, and guide, passed away last week. Lucio was a wonderful Amazon bird guide who dreamt of sharing his passion for birds with local Amazon school children. Unfortunately, Lucio did not have adequate access to binoculars for the children. We wanted to do something about that. Now Lucio's legacy must be carried on by other Amazon bird guides who had been working with him. We would love to present these guides with a quality classroom set of binoculars next summer. Please share this link to the Amazon Binocular Project with your friends so we can make it happen.

Educational Ecotourism in the Amazon

Educational Ecotourism in the Amazon  | Rainforest CLASSROOM: Inspiration, Resources, and More | Scoop.it

Christa Dillabaugh, Director at Amazon Rainforest Workshops, adds: “Sadly, young people today seem to be less and less able to connect and relate to the environment; whether it is their own backyard, or an ‘exotic’ place like the Amazon. Providing opportunities for young people to explore and discover the natural world is more important than ever in the face of climate change and world-wide biodiversity loss. We need to cultivate awareness, appreciation, and knowledge about the planet we share in order to take action to save it.

“Educational ecotourism, like the Amazon Rainforest Workshops programs I coordinate for students and teachers, are designed to do just this."
