Does the business model for sustainable public service media exist? | Hirondelle USA

Does the business model for sustainable public service media exist? | Hirondelle USA | Radio Hacktive (Fr-Es-En) | Scoop.it

In January 2011, the highly acclaimed and independent STAR radio in Liberia closed its doors. Efforts to generate operating revenues locally through advertising, and to strengthen the station’s management and governance through the creation of a local Board of Directors, were too little, too late. Considerable investment over the years in journalism training and editorial support meant that STAR was breaking important stories, and was viewed by the Liberian population as a credible, independent source of information. But a fledgling commercial department was left understaffed and unable to tap into the steadily growing advertising market and translate this into revenue for the radio.

...

Hirondelle USA is a non-profit organization that supports the peaceful transformation of societies coming out of conflict or undergoing democratic change.

How radio can be a conversation (not a lecture) and a jukebox (not a playlist)

How radio can be a conversation (not a lecture) and a jukebox (not a playlist) | Radio Hacktive (Fr-Es-En) | Scoop.it

The occasion of UNESCO's second World Radio Day (February 13, 2013) encourages us to reflect on radio as a medium which is celebrated for reaching the widest audience worldwide and is often a primary source of information, even for the most marginalised communities. I'm sure the Airtime community does not need convincing about the power of radio as a low-cost, accessible medium which brings groups together who are united by song tastes, interest in certain issues or simply by virtue of their location. Whatever reason people have for tuning in, the radio community are recognising that radio is changing in nature and the medium no longer serves as just a one way broadcast. Instead, radio is an interactive platform for communities to share ideas.

Working with both the Airtime and FrontlineSMS communities in the radio space, I've seen the number of channels through which that interaction happens. Both of these tools are widening the spectrum of options available to presenters to make radio the truly interactive, multi-platform conversation that it can be. In this post, I explore how digital communications – not just social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter but particularly the use of mobile phones, including SMS and voice - are changing how interactive radio can be, allowing audiences to increasingly control and influence radio content.

Message of the UNESCO Director-General | United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

Message of the UNESCO Director-General | United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization | Radio Hacktive (Fr-Es-En) | Scoop.it

World Radio Day celebrates a medium that has transformed the way we communicate and that remains at the forefront of the 21st century. On 18 December, 2012, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the 2011 resolution adopted by the UNESCO General Conference, proclaiming 13 February as World Radio Day, the day United Nations Radio was established in 1946.

The birth of radio in the 19th century ushered in the era of modern communication. The world has changed dramatically since then, but radio has hardly aged a day. It remains widely accessible, relatively cheap and very simple to use. It is still the medium that can carry any message to any place at any time – even without electricity. In situations of conflict and natural disaster, shortwave radio provides a lifeline of information that can save lives.

Radio has embraced the digital revolution to expand its power and reach. Across the world, the cost of broadcasting is decreasing and the number of radio stations is increasing. Citizen journalists and community media are using online radio stations to give voices to those who are rarely heard. More than ever, radio remains a force for social change, by sharing knowledge and providing a platform for inclusive debate.

In a world changing quickly, UNESCO is committed to harnessing the full power of radio to build bridges of understanding between peoples, to share information as widely as possible and to deepen respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, especially freedom of expression. This is essential for good governance, open societies and sustainable development.

This is why UNESCO works to protect the safety of radio journalists across the world and to support free, independent and pluralistic media, along with the necessary legal frameworks and democratic institutions.

UNESCO is also determined to make full use of community radio to address poverty and social exclusion at the local level and to empower marginalized rural groups, young people and women. Radio is a key platform for education and for protecting local cultures and languages. It is also a powerful way to amplify the voices of young people around the world on issues that affect their lives. We must bolster their skills and give them opportunities to engage fully with radio.

Radio has transformed our past -- it remains a powerful force for shaping a more peaceful, more sustainable and more inclusive future for all. This is UNESCO’s message for World Radio Day.

Finding the universal, a lesson of diversity by CBC Toronto Radio | Radiodays Europe 2013

Finding the universal, a lesson of diversity by CBC Toronto Radio | Radiodays Europe 2013 | Radio Hacktive (Fr-Es-En) | Scoop.it

Within a year, Susan Marjetti turned CBC Toronto into the leading radio programme in Canada. Today "The Metro Morning" is a business model of diversity.

Susan Marjetti had a vision. Toronto was and still is the most diverse city in Canada. She wanted CBC to be more relevant to more people.

She also had the strategy: recruit, hire, and reach out to the people in the city. Listen to them, include their ideas, and tell their stories.

Marjetti finally had the courage. People don't like change. During the first months, Marjetti lost large parts of CBC's core audience. But an even larger share of new listeners appeared, and within a year, the core returned.

Over the last decade CBC Toronto has tripled its audience share. "If you build it, they will come, we are living proof of that. Challenge yourself to new ways," Marjetti says.

To her, this meant to recruit and hire people of all backgrounds to expand the range of perspectives in the programming department. If you want to be diverse, this needs to reflect in your team.

On the other hand, "you need to find the universal to make diversity work." When Marjetti played a short soundbite of a Chinese mother desperately calling out to her kidnapped daughter in Mandarin, she only provided translation afterwards. But the audience had already understood.

Susan Marjetti provided an impressive example of how diversity works as a tool of success in public radio.

World Radio Day is observed on 13 February, which marks the day when the United Nations Radio was launched in 1946. Since its establishment, UN Radio has used its multilingual programmes carried by media outlets around the globe to tell the story of the international community’s efforts to meet the challenges of building a better world.

Amid the rise of new technologies, radio remains the most accessible platform, a powerful communication tool and a low cost medium.
