Les clubs d’écoute communautaires | Agro Radio Hebdo | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Radio : Opening a world of sound for visually impaired children in Belize | ears to our world | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Radio opens a world to all of our recipients, but to those who are visually impaired, this can be even more dramatic. Unlike the internet, which requires expensive translation software, radio content is designed to be heard, rather than watched or read–for those to whom sound and touch is their means of experiencing the world, radio is truly the perfect learning medium.

“Radio is essential in Haiti” | ETOW ears to our world | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

According to the Knight Foundation, a non-profit organization that advances journalism in the digital age, radio was “the undisputed lifeline for the Haitian public after the earthquake.” In a recently released report, “Media, Information System and Communities: Lessons from HAITI,” the Foundation asserted, “Of all the available humanitarian information tools, radio was the most effective means to share information with the community and to distribute information to affected populations.”...

As E. Marilyn Lowney, Executive Director of the Haitian Health Organization, which distributed many ETOW radios, recently told us, “When important events or emergencies occur, people gather around available radios for news. Often 15 or 20 people gather around one radio. Public health messages are usually relayed on the radio. When the scourge of cholera recently struck Haiti, health messages and instructions for prevention, proper sanitation and treatment were widely broadcast. The radio saved many lives in our area when Hurricane Tomas struck in November and when cholera threatened to devastate the population.”...

The guests are Joe Harland, BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra’s head of short form content, 1Xtra DJ Charlie Sloth and photofilm creator Peter Rudge from digital agency Duckrabbit.

Answering these questions are radio futurologist James Cridland, Ben Fawkes from audio sharing service Soundcloud, Chris Maples of Spotify and Nicky Birch from indie Somethin’ Else.

Free access without app or web? It's called radio. | Radio Netherlands Worldwide | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
On World Radio Day, 13 February 2012, UNESCO will remind the world that there is a medium which reaches parts that other media can't reach.
Radio is still a vital form of communication because a radio station can be set up much faster, and at much lower cost, than a terrestrial or satellite TV station. Radio is especially useful for reaching remote communities and vulnerable people such as the illiterate, the disabled and the poor. It also provides a platform for such groups to take part in the wider public debate.
Radio also plays a vital role in emergency communication and disaster relief, which was illustrated following the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in December 2004. RNW was able to help several partner stations in Indonesia by sending out “radio stations in a box” – self-contained mobile FM stations providing a temporary studio and transmitter ready to be used by broadcasters whose own facilities had been destroyed.
