Even if Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg hadn’t been introduced to Spotify two years ago, it was probably inevitable that the two companies would hook up. The European music service had already won millions of fans, thanks to a business model that allowed music nuts to stream any song, instantly, for free. More important, it made it easy for people to share music with one another. This vision—of music as a social experience—fit perfectly with Facebook’s view of the world, which values sharing over all else. And that’s why, when former Facebook president and Napster cofounder Sean Parker discovered Spotify in 2009, he made a point of telling Zuckerberg about it.

“I’d never even heard of Spotify, but Sean mentioned it to me one day,” Zuckerberg says. “I was like, wow, this person has built a really cool music product and also understands how you can integrate social things in it.” Within a day, Zuckerberg had updated his Facebook status: Spotify is so good.

Fox: Social networks most effective for marketing | Advanced Television

Social networks have become more effective marketing tools than traditional media, says Fox Broadcasting’s VP of entertainment Kevin Reilly. Speaking at the MIPCOM Reilly said using social networks to generate buzz ahead of show premieres has helped harness new audiences.

“Many of our promotional messages, and at times even the shows themselves, weren’t penetrating, so we decided that if we let our audience see a show before it premieres and before our marketing reaches critical mass, the power of the social networks can create loyalists who are committed to helping spreading the word,” he said. “These brand ambassadors can recruit audience in a far more convincing way than any campaign.”

At f8 last Thursday, music services such as Spotify, Vevo, Rdio and Mog gained the ability to publish the listening activity of their users to Facebook’s new home page Ticker. The exposure to the friends of their users through the tickers has led to big gains for some music partners.

Most significantly, Spotify has gained one million new monthly active Facebook-integrated users since f8 to reach 4.4 million MAU. It spiked from 1.12 million to 3.25 million daily active users the day after f8, and appears to be settling back to roughly a quarter million new DAU. Rdio, MOG, and Deezer have also seen significant gains in their numbers of Facebook-integrated users.
