Radio’s streaming listeners are less mobile.

Radio’s streaming listeners are less mobile. | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Why don't people listen to radio as much on streaming devices? New Triton Digital data from January shows broadcast radio streams split 80/20 in favor of listening on desktops.

It showed pureplays with a 70/30 split in favor of mobile listening, driven by Pandora.   However broadcast streams did see an 18% increase in mobile listening in January, which Triton says was the fastest growing sector of the month. Pureplay desktop and mobile listening remained relatively consistent at a 2% and 3% gain respectively.

Detroit’s Big Three committed to FM/AM radio | Inside Radio | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

The digital dashboard is bringing all sorts of things to drivers, but it won’t push FM/AM radio out of the front seat.  That’s according to the big three automakers.  General Motors, Ford and Chrysler each tell Inside Radio they’re committed to keeping broadcast radio inside their dashboards — and some are even doubling down on their commitment to it.

We have no plans to get rid of them because of their value for our customers,” Chrysler spokesman Eric Mayne says.  He points out they’ve just announced plans to begin installing HD Radio as standard on some Dodge Ram pickups.  It’s a similar message from General Motors where executive say they have “no near term plans” to stop installing broadcast radio in cars. “While we are excited about the possibilities of internet radio services and other emerging services, we understand that AM/FM radio is still a significant source of news and entertainment,” chief infotainment officer Phil Abram says. “In fact, it is an expected feature.”

Can anyone turn streaming music into a real business?

Can anyone turn streaming music into a real business? | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Six years later, everything in the music and technology industries is pushing toward digital streaming. Last year, music-related startups received $619.3 million in new investment. Spotify has more than five million paying subscribers, proving that customers will pay rather than pirate every month for a rich library of music if it's inexpensive and available everywhere. (Later this year, Spotify will offer free, ad-supported music on mobile devices in all of its markets.) Soundcloud, the leader in user-created embedded audio, just simplified its paid, pro, and premium partnership tiers for heavy users, music labels, and brands. Google wants to start a music subscription service in the second half of this year, trading on its strong positions with both Android and YouTube. Hardware upstart Beats Electronics is building its own streaming service, Daisy, using just-acquired Mog as its backbone. Even Apple is finally embracing streaming in principle, negotiating royalty rates with music rights owners to add a new, complimentary service to its iTunes Store.

Pandora has been able to do what radio has not: generate significant revenue from mobile. In the quarter that ended January 31, Pandora generated $80.3 million from mobile. That's an increase of 111 percent over the same quarter one year earlier ($38 million).

For the year, Pandora doubled mobile revenue to $255.9 million. Even better news for Pandora is that mobile revenue is climbing faster than the growth of mobile listening.

Case Study: Is Free Music Worth It? - hypebot

Case Study: Is Free Music Worth It? - hypebot | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

While it’s damn near impossible to calculate the life-time value of a fan for an up and coming independent band, the short term gains and costs are easily available. Below, I’ve run through what it looks like to be in an indie band and how free downloads both benefit and hurt our bottom line while trying to make a break in the industry.

I see all too often people thinking that independent bands are somehow making huge amounts of money playing live shows and by distributing their music independently. I’m here to show you that we don’t make as much as you think.

If you don’t care about the nitty-gritty details of how much my band spends/makes, feel free to jump straight to the bottom where I give a nice summary of what money comes in, what money goes out, and how much free music actually costs an artist.

Radios Ripped from New Cars? “Not So Fast,” say Consumers

Radios Ripped from New Cars? “Not So Fast,” say Consumers | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

You can climb down from the ceiling now, Mr. Broadcaster – it turns out new cars will feature FM/AM radios built-in for the foreseeable future (although certainly not forever).

The logic of this should be obvious to us all, but particularly obvious for anyone who bothers to talk with consumers.

And I did.

Between March 9 and March 10 2013, I fielded a random, balanced, national online study of 1,000 consumers and asked how they feel about those radios in their cars – and how they’d feel if they disappeared...

The disruption is happening and it is bound to accelerate.  But we will not wake up tomorrow and discover new cars with no radios. Indeed, the problem is that those new cars will be full to the brim with entertainment choices galore.

Radio Gets 'Second Screen' in SoundHound-Dial Pact | Media - Advertising Age | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Radio-network company Dial Global and music ID app SoundHound have inked an exclusive deal to extend radio ad campaigns and sponsorships onto mobile phones through a platform called SoundHound for Radio.

SoundHound, like Shazam, lets people identify a song playing in their immediate vicinity simply by opening the app and holding their phone up.

 Soundhound app

This is how SoundHound for Radio works: Radio listeners will hear a call to action either from a radio host or in a radio ad to use their mobile phone to "SoundHound" the broadcast. Listeners don't have to open the app immediately, but can do so over a specified period of time that could be a few hours. Once they do so, they will be greeted with elements such as exclusive content, contest-entry forms or other sponsored promotional opportunities.

5 Aspects Of The Old Music Industry Being Disrupted And Replaced By Social Media - hypebot

5 Aspects Of The Old Music Industry Being Disrupted And Replaced By Social Media - hypebot | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

In a widely noted Billboard interview, Amanda Palmer stated that "Twitter has replaced Google and [music] management." Nobody cared about the Google part but her claim of replacing music management certainly raised a few eyebrows. Of course, like many such claims, it wasn't totally true but it did provide an interesting example of the disruptive power of social media to replace expensive professional roles with cheap, good enough solutions.

Two Days In The Valley « jacoBLOG | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Previously, the discussions centered more on “what’s going to happen.”  This year, it felt more like “this is happening all around us.”

Most of the presentations focused on the real world and the solutions and applications that attendees could take back home and implement.  This is progress – we weren’t talking about elementary issues: whether a station should have an app or who at the station should post on Facebook.  Instead, this felt more like graduate school where the discussions debated the best solutions and approaches.

YouTube to launch music streaming service, take on Spotify - Fortune Tech

YouTube to launch music streaming service, take on Spotify - Fortune Tech | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Exclusive: Google is planning to roll out a music streaming service to capitalize on the power of YouTube...

Sources in the record industry told Fortune that it is not yet clear if a subscription-based model is more lucrative (and therefore preferable) to an ad-subsidized approach. Free nets more customers, but the subscription model has consumers actively paying for music -- a good thing, if you're in the music business, which just posted its first year-on-year increase in sales in thirteen years....

Google is entering an already crowded field: Spotify, Pandora (P), Rdio, Soundcloud, and Muve Music all offer customers similar access to large online music libraries. Apple is rumored to be building a "radio" feature in its iTunes program that would deliver streaming music based upon a user's tastes -- a service something like Pandora -- that further merges the experience of being in a "store" to purchase music, and then listening to it in a "player."

They're all fighting over a still small pie. U.S. consumers have been fairly slow to join -- and stick with -- subscription music services. The most popular, Muve Music, has just 1.4 million customers. (Spotify is close behind, with about 1 million.) Its success is in large part due to the fact that it bundles its price into a cellphone bill, as if it were a cable operator charging for an MTV/VH1 package. The mobile carrier that owns Muve, Cricket, is then able to sell subscriptions at less than $5 a month, far lower rates than Spotify, which generally costs about twice that much.

Soundcloud, a free music streaming site that is user-curated and is, in many ways, similar in spirit and practice to YouTube, has recently begun partnering with major artists and large companies, such as Snoop Lion (nee, Dog) and Red Bull. Soundcloud boasts that it is the fastest growing music streaming site, with its users uploading about 10 hours of content a minute. In 2010, YouTube users uploaded 35 hours of content per minute; in 2011, they posted 48 hours per minute; as of last May, it was up to 72 hours a minute. It's not all music, but a lot is.
