No, Spotify has not just officially announced a reported move into video services, but the music streaming startup is continuing to put itself into the same places where video is. Today, Spotify announced with LG that it would be integrating its premium, paid service on to a range of connected media devices from the consumer electronics giant. Devices will include Blu-ray home cinema systems, speakers and more, and they will start getting sold in April.

here’s an old saw among established technology companies that says innovation happens elsewhere, that big ideas can come from small, unexpected places.

 

The best way to tap into that potential, according to this view, is to throw open the gates and let all developers build products on top of your existing, proprietary technology. Make it easy for developers, and good things are bound to happen.

 

That, at least, has been the ethos behind the steady stream of music-related application software interfaces, or APIs. Last month, two companies, Gracenote and MediaNet, quietly added their APIs into the mix.

1,200 radio delegates gathered for three days to celebrate and discuss radio around Europe and beyond. Welcome This, was Radiodays Europe 2013.

This is transmitting station Berlin. The first words on the first radio transmitter in Germany 90 years ago, and the first words to officially open the conference.

Over the last two days there’s been over 50 sessions taking place in four rooms – not everyone got to see what they wanted to see due to up to four sessions taking place at once, but with social media and the organisers own extensive blog, most people could at least find out the headlines from each session.

There was a terrific response in the room to the talk given by fellow Australian, Sam Cavanagh. Sam is the Executive Producer of the Hamish & Andy Show. At the heart of his talk was an idea around how the program team treated their audience. As he spoke, with a great deal of passion, there was a real sense of excitement in the room around the idea of seeing your audience as “fans”, not “listeners.”...

 

On a totally different level, I was completely blown away by the talk given by Susan Marjetti from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. As the manager of the local talk radio station in Toronto (probably one of the world’s most culturally diverse communities), she explained how she and her team transformed their radio station over the last decade.

Les géants du Net préparent leurs plateformes de streaming musical, pour venir concurrencer les pionniers Deezer et Spotify. L'aubaine d'un marché en plein développement.

A la fin du mois de mars, Twitter devrait lancer sa première application de streaming, Twitter Music. Amazon pourrait lui emboîter le pas et débarquer avec sa propre plateforme, suivi de près par Google (via YouTube) qui annonce d'ici à la fin 2013 un nouveau service sur abonnement, en parallèle d'une offre sur sa boutique Google Play. De son côté, Apple préparerait un projet de webradio similaire à Pandora. Ces nouvelles plateformes viennent s'ajouter à celles déjà existantes : Rdio, le service XBox Music de Microsoft, et bien sûr le Français Deezer et le Suédois Spotify, les pionniers dans le domaine. Le streaming serait-il la lueur d'espoir d'une industrie musicale à peine sortie de la crise ?

La radio à papa est définitivement enterrée, et de ses cendres surgit le phœnix des contenus enrichis, où les sons de l’antenne le disputent aux datas, vidéos ou sites interactifs. C’est notamment le cas chez Radio France, qui travaille depuis 2 ans à la refonte et l’évolution de ses offres.


Enrichir les programmes (donc les équipes)

Mais en dehors de ces sites quasiment autonomes, l’autre axe de travail de l’équipe des nouveaux médias de Radio France (qui est tout de même passée de 70 personnes fin 2011 à 140 d’ici la fin 2013) est d’enrichir les contenus proposés à l’antenne. Cela passe donc par la radio filmée, par exemple, qui se généralise de plus en plus, mais aussi par les textes qui accompagnent, approfondissent ou retranscrivent simplement les extraits sonores mis en ligne. Pour les stations centrées sur l’information, il peut également s’agir de proposer des cartographies ou des data visualisations, des textes ou des liens qui permettent d’aller plus loin par rapport aux reportages radios, souvent assez courts. Dans cette politique de diffusion et d’enrichissement des antennes, on retrouve aussi les podcasts ou applications mobiles.

As always, Valerie Geller was an inspiration at Radio Days Europe. I first became aware of her work. Even though I’ve heard her mantra of “tell the truth, make it matter, and never be boring” many, many times over the last decade, it’s a message which continues to resonate. “No matter what the platform, story-telling matters”, Valerie said today.

She was on a panel with another Valerie, Valerie Weber from a commercial music radio station based in Bavaria, Germany. She explained how story-telling is important in mostly music radio also, not just talk. “Every song is like a short movie” she said at one point. She illustrated this by saying, her listeners had been moved by the dramatic qualities of a song by Adele which they had simply translated from English into the Bavarian dialect. She also mentioned a great sounding on-air promotion they did where they asked listeners to tell them the story behind a significant bill they had to pay. For the best story, the radio station paid the bill on the listener’s behalf.
