Spotify teams with MusicMetric for new analytics service

Spotify teams with MusicMetric for new analytics service | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Musicmetrc has announced a deal with Spotify that will allow its users to benchmark Spotify data alongside social media trends and file-sharing information.

Musicmetric Pro, Musicmetric’s premium analytics tool, will integrate Spotify data allowing it to be analysed alongside other data streams. MusicMetric says this could show how streaming data can be used by the music industry to better leverage revenues.

Anyone with Spotify Analytics can now access all their data through Musicmetric, meaning streaming data can be laid on top of social media trends, BitTorrent consumption and sentiment for over 700,000 artists captured by Musicmetric.

Online radio will start serving ads based on your web browsing

Online radio will start serving ads based on your web browsing | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Websites show you ads based on other sites you visited. Now, online radio stations will start playing you songs based on the same information.

While marketers have long targeted online radio listeners baed on their zip code or gender, this type of interest-based targeting is new. The ad options, which are the result of a deal between radio service Triton Digital and data provider eXelate, mean radio ads are about to get a lot more specific.

According to eXelate CEO, Mark Zagorski, radio is the “last bastion of context based advertising” but that this will change quickly due to online radio’s growing popularity and the capacity of behavioral-based advertising to scale quickly.

The new interest-based ads will help brands reach users of Pandora, which makes up about 74% of the online radio market, but also the web streams of more traditional radio stations as well.

Internet music service Pandora making tour plans

Internet music service Pandora making tour plans | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Internet radio pioneer Tim Westergren is working on a DIY touring program for musicians.

An ongoing experiment at free streaming radio service Pandora, the artist touring program could "solve the singular problem of musicians: how do you get people to come hear you play?" said Pandora founder Westergren, speaking Wednesday night at the International Consumer Electronics Show...

...Westergren didn't offer a timeframe for possible availability of the service. However, he said that such a service, combined with the growing Pandora listening audience – it had 67 million active listeners in December 2012, up 41% from last year – could boost the music ecosystem. "Put that together with a robust radio and we have the makings of real exciting healthy, profitable and growing music industry," he said.

Deezer hopes to find a partner to help break into the US market | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Deezer, a French streaming music service available in 160 countries, is looking at coming to the US as well. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, CEO Axel Dauchez said that the company started talking "months ago" with potential partners in the US. "We are looking for a partner in the US," he said, "maybe an operator or a blue-chip company, that is able to provide us with a significant volume of subscribers." If Deezer did come to the US, it would be competing with Pandora, Rdio, Spotify, and many similar radio or streaming services.

Harnessing Music’s Technological Future | TechCrunch | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Of all the activities at Pandora, witnessing the impact of our personalized radio on the careers of working musicians is the most gratifying. Over the last 12 years we have assembled over a million analyzed songs in the Music Genome Project, representing more than 100,000 artists, the majority of which are independent working musicians.

Today, more than 95 percent of those songs play every month. As Pandora’s listenership has achieved significant scale – now streaming more than 1.2 billion hours to about 60 million listeners every month – a very exciting vision is coming into focus for how personalized radio can improve the fundamental dynamics of this industry for artists.

Digital Radio Gets Real-Time With Xaxis Trading desk partners with Triton Digital

Digital Radio Gets Real-Time With Xaxis Trading desk partners with Triton Digital | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

While no medium is totally efficient, digital radio advertising can be particularly wasteful. For example, someone in New York may listen to a Los Angeles sports radio station’s online stream to keep up on the Southern California sports scene, but that person isn’t going to care about some local LA car dealership’s upcoming sale or a new bar that the radio host claims is the best spot in SoCal to watch the Lakers play.

That sort of problem is easily solved in the word of display advertising, where contextual targeting has in many cases given way to real-time bidding, or the ability to buy ads on the fly that are targeted to a specific type of user. Now RTB is coming to digital radio courtesy of WPP-owned agency trading desk Xaxis.

Through a partnership with Triton Digital—which provides digital services and applications to radio companies, handling more than 2 billion online and mobile audio impressions per month—Xaxis Radio advertisers will be able to target the New Yorker listening to LA sports radio online with ads for the best Big Apple bar to catch a Lakers game. Triton Digital has access to digital audio inventory from companies like Cox Communications, NPR, and Slacker Radio, though not all publishers are yet on board for RTB advertising.

A more complete picture of the iTunes economy

A more complete picture of the iTunes economy | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Here are some conclusions:

The iTunes economy defined as gross revenues transacted through it is now about $12 billion/yr.Over the last five years content owners (media and app) received a total of $24 billion while Apple spent about $10 billion to create those salesSeen as a retail business, iTunes costs about $3.5 billion/yr to operate. This includes merchandising, payment processing and “shipping & handling”.Total revenues have risen steadily in a range of 32 to 38% compounded over the last 4 years.Apps are now a third of all iTunes revenues, (about $4 billion/yr) having taken that share in only 4.5 years.Non-app media still make up 2/3 of iTunes in terms of sales value but their growth is now 28% vs. about 50% for apps.

The “December Surprise” – Nielsen purchasing Arbitron– is undoubtedly a game-changer for the media business.  And many in radio are hopeful that the sale means good things for the industry.

While the devil is always in the details, this move would seem to be a big crossroads moment for radio, media, and measurement – at a time when innovation is necessary.

With Nielsen Deal, can Arbitron step into the digital age?

With Nielsen Deal, can Arbitron step into the digital age? | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
This morning TV ratings company Nielsen announced it purchased Arbitron, a radio measurement company, for $1.26 billion. The deal combines to two mature, slow-growth businesses. But one is more resistant to the digital age than the other.

...Pandora and TargetSpot are probably the biggest two holders of digital streaming inventory. Clear Channel’s iHeartRadio doesn’t have any ads yet. And Spotify’s radio functionality is just that — one small function of its overall business, so the company sells ads more like digital units than like terrestrial radio spots. It’s a market that’s still young enough to be figuring things out. With a new owner and possibly new attitude, Arbitron could be there on the ground floor.

Music Investment Tops $600 Million In 2012; Up 34%

Music Investment Tops $600 Million In 2012; Up 34% | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Anyone who thinks investment in music is 'drying up' clearly hasn't looked at the numbers. Because with less than two weeks left in 2012, investment in music-related startups and companies has reached $619.3 million, a near-34 percent gain over 2011.

Spotify wasn't the biggest catch, either. Deezer claimed a monstrous $130 million round, while Sonos received a handsome $135 million in financing. Those rounds, coupled with Spotify's $100 million, accounted for roughly half the total pot.

Here's the rundown of every financing round that we reported in 2012, typically confirmed by the participants (company, investors, or both), or filed publicly. Other times, figures were reaffirmed by publications like the Wall Street Journal.
