Music wars heat up — but is free really the future?

Music wars heat up — but is free really the future? | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
According to the study, 91 percent of people still “prefer to own music,” listing a number of reasons such as unlimited listening, security that their music won’t disappear, and support for artists. And while only 13 percent of people surveyed pay to stream music online, the majority of those (84 percent) still buy music as well.

These tendencies become even stronger among those who count themselves as “independent” music fans, many of whom use streaming services like Spotify, Mog and Rdio as ways to try new music before they purchase.

It’s always worth being skeptical of surveys, but noises like this have to sound good to the likes of iTunes and Amazon — and while it may not be enough to those who think streaming will emerge as the only true victor, it indicates there’s life in retail yet.

"Scheduled broadcast drives crazy: give us what we want, when we want it!" - see Ericsson study | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

People are spending less time watching scheduled broadcast TV and more time watching streamed and on-demand TV online according to a new study from Ericsson.

Ericsson’s TV & Video Consumer Trend Report 2011 shows that 84% of respondents watched broadcast TV at least once a week, compared with 88% of respondents in last year’s study. By contrast, 33% watched online content at least once a week, up from 30% a year earlier.

...

Meanwhile, people said the most popular features of their TV service were the quality of the video, no commercials, a wireless home and personalised services. Respondents said they would be most willing to pay for “movie releases direct to the TV.

...

Ednote: I stronly believe that it requires a serious reaction from broadcasters, as the on-demand wave is coming:

- Push VOD for quality movie that people will pay

- OTT for niche content & catch-up TV

MOG Takes a Swing at Spotify, Launches Free Music Streaming

Music streaming service MOG has announced that it is adding a free, advertising-supported subscription plan. The move, which is almost certainly a response to the recent U.S. launch of Spotify, is designed to attract more people to the service's 11 million song library of all-you-can-stream music.Previously, MOG was only available in one of two paid "premium" flavors. European sensation Spotify launched in the U.S. with two premium tiers as well, but crucially included a free subscription service with ads and some modest limitations on streaming. Spotify picked up 1.4 million American users in its first few weeks.

The next Pandora will be a mashup

The next Pandora will be a mashup | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Hardly a week goes by in which we don’t get a pitch for a site that aggregates and filters music videos to serve up streams of personalized entertainment. The latest entrant is VHX.tv’s Music Video Genome, which launched last weekend.

The site allows users to enter the name of an artist and then simply press play. Musicvideogenome.com immediately queries Last.fm to get recommendations for similar artists and then builds a playlist of YouTube videos based on those recommendations. The result is a personalized music video stream that works in a similar fashion to Pandora’s radio streams.

The beauty of digital information is that we are no longer restricted by physical space. There exists the opportunity for simultaneous structures of organization. The more ways we find to slice and dice content, the more opportunities for discovery become available. We can have it all — search for seekers who know what they want, social for seekers who want to listen and engage, and browsing for seekers who wish to meander and let the collection speak for itself.
