Podcasts are getting better faster than audiobooks are getting cheaper | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Frustrated with myself over how few books I’ve read this year, last week I broke down and signed up for a trial membership to Audible.com. A friend of mine had told me it was his secret to reading more books, and when I complained that I didn’t have the time to wade through some 12-hour recording, he pointed out that I am currently subscribed to six pro wrestling podcasts. Properly chastened, I signed up for a trial, downloaded my first book, and listened to it over a long plane and bus ride while traveling abroad.

The Future of Devialet Audio [Prepa #Audience CSP+ & #AudioMoment]

The Future of Devialet Audio [Prepa #Audience CSP+ & #AudioMoment] | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
To chart the course of high-end audio brand Devialet is to observe an industry disrupted. After their launch in 2007, Devialet created a large footprint in the professional amplifier world using an Analog Digital Hybrid (ADH®) technology. With the Phantom—and its two developmental iterations—they produced (entirely in France) a consumer-facing product that appeased at-home audiophiles. From patents to design, the Devialet team continues to advance sound distribution. As we've noted before, this isn't a lifestyle brand; it's a technology company that aims to deliver on the promise of no background noise, no saturation and no distortion. "The audio market now comprises three billion units a year and it's growing faster as brands provide their technology to companies in other industries," Devialet CEO Quentin Sannié explains. To spread the Devialet message, Sannié's recently announced one such partnership—and the launch of several brick-and-mortar stores. And there's a good reason for both.

A GUIDE TO
VOICE INTERFACES

SIX PRINCIPLES FOR DESIGNING FOR VOICE UI
WHAT IS A VOICE UI?
While we’re used to using our voices to get what we want from each other (“Number four with fries, please!”), the ability to get what we want from our products in the same way is still a relatively new phenomenon.

To help make sense of the current and future state of voice interfaces and navigate what’s destined to be an increasingly “Open Sesame!” age, we’ve compiled some of the most important things we’ve learned about voice UI for our friends in the design community. If you’re interested in learning about the building blocks of voice interface or need some inspiration to begin designing for one, this guide is for you.

Siri usage and engagement dropped since last year, as Alexa and Cortana grew [Prepa #VoiceUI] | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Siri remains the most popular virtual assistant with 41.4 million monthly active users in the U.S., according to a new report from measurement firm Verto Analytics out this morning, but it has seen a 15 percent decline since last year – or 7.3 million monthly users. In addition, the study found that engagement with Siri has also dropped by nearly half during this period, from 21 percent to 11 percent.

Meanwhile, Amazon Alexa usage has been skyrocketing – jumping 325 percent in monthly active users – that is, from 0.8 million to 2.6 million monthly users, as its user engagement also increased from 10 percent to 22 percent during the same time frame.

Cortana has seen an increase as well, growing from 0.2 million monthly users in the U.S. to 0.7 million, or a 350 percent increase. Its user engagement tripled, from 19 percent to 60 percent.

On a testé… Google Home, l’enceinte connectée avec assistant virtuel [prepa #VoiceUI]

On a testé… Google Home, l’enceinte connectée avec assistant virtuel [prepa #VoiceUI] | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Excellente enceinte

With its new project #Hertz, Prisa Radio wants to make audio more discoverable online (and enrich the listening experience) #SpeechToText #Transcription via Vecsys ;-) | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
The new feature launched earlier this month, with the aim of enriching audio on demand with transcriptions and tags to make it easier to find online

...

In 2015, Prisa Radio, the world's largest Spanish-language radio group, began putting in place a digital transformation plan to identify business and editorial opportunities for the future.

As part of this plan, the organisation started thinking of ways to improve audio discoverability in search and recommendation engines, which are primarily optimised for text.

...

Hertz was not developed primarily to change the listening experience for people, so the player retained its look and feel – the aim was to enrich audio files with transcriptions and tags to allow search engines to index them.

When a listener arrives to the player now for on-demand content,a transcription is shown in the video as the audio start rolling. A user can also share the entire clip or a portion of it, using the text to quickly identify the desired quote, for example if they heard it on the radio earlier that day.

Enriching the audio with transcriptions and tags means listeners can find it when they search the web for the name of a programme, or the name of the host of a particular show. Searching for this can send them to the player on the website, but it can also display results from distribution platforms such as iTunes, which is Prisa Radio's main driver of on-demand listeners.

Why Spotify Lowered the Volume of Songs and Ended Hegemonic Loudness

Why Spotify Lowered the Volume of Songs and Ended Hegemonic Loudness | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
At the end of May, Spotify made a change to its music files that went unnoticed by almost all of the service's listeners. What was apparent, however, to sound engineers and studio wizards was that the volume had been reduced on every Spotify-hosted track.

Using software called Dynameter, this collection of audiophiles took measurements of popular playlists like the Global Top 50 and albums of genres ranging from soul to metal, and discovered that the Spotify catalog had become quieter.

We consider "loudness" to describe the human perception of a rich sound. When you listen to something, therefore, what really counts is the perception of that sound, not the values that are registered on a decibel meter.

Spotify Is Finally On Xbox One With High Quality Audio [Prepa #AudioMoment]

Spotify Is Finally On Xbox One With High Quality Audio [Prepa #AudioMoment] | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Last week, someone noticed Xbox Live honcho Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb using something that looked a lot like music-streaming service Spotify running on an Xbox. Turns out that was no fluke: Microsoft just announced Spotify is indeed finally coming to the Xbox One, effective immediately, and with a full-court press: it's available in a total of 34 markets worldwide.
To get it, you just have to visit the Xbox Store, download the new Spotify for Xbox app, and you're in business. What happens next depends whether you're already paying for the service.
Spotify offers two listening options, Free or Premium. Free, which only requires signing up for an account, offers access to the service's vast music catalogue, but with ads (including audio spots that play every so many tracks) and the requirement that you have to shuffle-play tracks. Premium, which runs $10 a month, removes the ads and shuffle-play strictures.
With the Xbox One version of the app, you can listen to music while playing a game, use an Xbox One gamepad to choose from saved music, rifle through Spotify's 30 million song catalogue or check out select playlists (like "Epic Gaming Soundtracks" or "Power Gaming") in a devoted gaming hub. Want to know what Major Nelson's into? He's apparently curated a playlist to kick things off. You can even futz with your listening queue by using Spotify Connect on a phone, tablet or computer: just make sure everything's on the same wireless network, launch the app on one of those devices, start playing a song, select "Devices Available," and pick your Xbox One.

NBC Wants Media To Focus On Delayed, Digital Viewing Of TV Shows

NBC Wants Media To Focus On Delayed, Digital Viewing Of TV Shows | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Broadcast TV's network leader NBC wants business writers and critics to focus more on overall viewing — not just live program viewing measures.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association meeting, Bob Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, explained that looking at business holistically, it is doing very well.

“Delayed viewing and digital are not only keeping things afloat, they are getting stronger,” Greenblatt says. “The revenue we get from all the delayed viewing is significant. .. We are following the money.”

Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment, adds: “Our shows are more profitable. We are figuring out a way to monetize these shows.”

As other TV networks have shown, Greenblatt says, many TV shows’ delayed viewing through 35 days and beyond is yielding big results.

For example, the premiere episode this past season of “This is Us” — one of NBC’s big hits — started with a 2.8 live program-plus-same day Nielsen 18-49 ratings. But adding in all the delayed viewing through 35 days boosted that rating number to 13.

A game-changer for the world of audio advertising

A game-changer for the world of audio advertising | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
The development of programmatic ad buying and selling has revolutionised digital media across most formats, from display to video, desktop to mobile – and it’s about to become a powerful force in digital radio and music streaming services too. Perhaps even more surprising, programmatic radio advertising may have a widespread impact on how advertisers attribute campaign success in the future.

In this digital age, the majority of consumers travel with a laptop, iPad, smartphone or all three. These devices are commonly used to stream music, live radio or podcasts, particularly during commutes on public transport.

Most music or audio programming arrives in our ears through apps. Programmatic audio represents a way to deliver addressable ads directly to consumers, leveraging targeted advertising served through those apps, much the same way that targeted display is delivered to mobile consumers.

This is potentially game-changing for the world of audio advertising, which has traditionally relied on broadcast radio’s reach and scale. Mobile devices and apps are treasure troves of consumer data, giving radio advertisers the ability to measure the quantity of consumers that hear their ads, what demographic groups these listeners fall into, and, potentially, insights into their activities post listening.

I believe that in (consumer) technology, it is all about the following areas of impact:

Convenience
User Experience (UX)
Communication
Information Accessibility
If some of these come together in a new product or user interface (UI), we will likely see its success. And, never forget Amara’s Law:

We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run.

Amazon Echo has a soundtrack for every activity in your life [Prepa #VoiceUI + #AudioMoment] | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Amazon Echo has a soundtrack for every activity in your life
The voice assistant now offers hundreds of new voice commands for music based on meditation, getting pumped or, uh, other stuff.

Amazon's Alexa can now respond to your awkward request to play "hook-up music."

Building on the Echo smart speaker's core use as -- you know -- a speaker, Amazon on Thursday rolled out 500 new voice commands for the device to let people ask for music set to different activities. These commands are available for people that have Amazon Prime Music, which is included with a $99 Prime membership, and Amazon Music Unlimited, which costs $4 monthly for Echo owners.

The commands work as another small way for Amazon to connect its devices and services together, in hopes to keeping people subscribed to Prime as well as its monthly subscriptions such as Audible, Music Unlimited and Kindle Unlimited.

Alexa music commands already included requests to play specific kinds of genre, era or mood, and let people search for a song via lyrics. Meditation was the most requested activity that's now available. Amazon also threw in commands to play music for partying, eating, nap time and getting pumped. People can also combine music genres with activities to ask for, say, "classical music for sleeping" or "country music for running."

Facebook is hiring for a music publishing head in Europe - Music Business Worldwide

Facebook is hiring for a music publishing head in Europe - Music Business Worldwide | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
MBW has spotted that the company is hiring for a Music Publishing Business Development Manager based in London to “lead music publisher/society licensing strategy and negotiations with rights-holders in EMEA”.

The news comes barely a week after it was revealed that the social media giant had taken another big step towards working with the music business by acquiring copyright identification startup Source3.

Facebook’s ad for the EMEA publishing role notes that the successful candidate will also “collaborate with our product and media partnerships teams to ensure a coordinated and best-in-class licensing structure”, as well as “representing Facebook in meetings with music industry executives from other companies in EMEA”.

Someone with more than six years of experience in music partner relationship management is sought, while a “proven track record of leadership and hands-on deal experience in music licensing for global organizations” is preferred.

Unsurprisingly, Facebook is also looking for evidence of “digital music negotiation experience for musical composition”.

Voice SEO and the New Rules of Discovery with advantage to audio content and voiceapps | Voicebot [Prepa #VoiceUI] | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

THE SEO ADVANTAGE OF AUDIO CONTENT AND VOICE APPS

Google is also prioritizing voice applications to voice search queries on Google Assistant and by extension Google Home. There is deep link discovery baked into Google Actions which are the new voice apps for the Google Assistant ecosystem. Google Assistant will proactively suggest voice apps that may be relevant to a particular query based on a scan of these deep links. Amazon’s Alexa does not have this deep-link discovery feature yet, but specific phrases are reserved for Alexa skills. The snippets bias is an intentional application of the old search algorithms and web content to match voice queries. The voice app and audio content bias represents the birth of new search algorithms designed specifically for voice interaction.

This shouldn’t surprise us. Desktop web search algorithms evolved to support the mobile user context. It is even more important that this evolution accelerate for voice. Mobile and desktop are similar modalities because each relies on a combination of text and visual imagery. Voice searches have typically received visual results from Siri and Google as if the user had entered a text search. A long page of links was delivered. The logical response in most instances to voice is an audible response or interactive voice application. That is what Google, Amazon and Microsoft are all moving toward.
