Triton Digital President/CEO NealSchore acknowledges radio for making “good progress with top brands and categories”, but says the clients still haven’t been educated enough. He tells the room – and the Internet radio industry – that it’s time “stop debating”, and think like publishers (content publishers). He says “the rest is just noise that’s distracting” to advertisers. As for that “registration.” To provide potential clients with better research, Triton Digital believes it’s time to ask for a little more personal information, in exchange for the free audio stream and ads. The service would ask for things like gender, location and age (via birth date).

NPR’s recent deal with Triton Digital is more than a means of measuring webcast metrics. It’s also an important step in the direction of monetizing NPR’s streaming content and sharing that revenue potential and that power with affiliate stations.

In particular, this new deal gives local affiliates the ability to replace over-the-air spots with stream-only spots. Given the unique nature of the content, the revenue prospects for both local stations and the network are considerable.

The Radio Advertising Bureau has put together a Tuesday morning panel at the 2012 NAB Show titled “Is Mobile Marketing the Future of Advertising in Radio?”...

John Potter, vice president of training at the Radio Advertising Bureau, cited overall mobile ad revenues for 2011 at more than $1 billion. “And it’s projected for huge increases over the next five years. Mobile is off to the races.”...

In addition to providing the user the ability to tune in any station’s audio streams, a smartphone brings user interactivity and pictures — stills, videos or graphics — to the screen. This visual element can present added value to an advertiser...

“At the end of the day, the ability of a radio station to get their icon on the desktop of a person’s smartphone is the best branding you can have. It’s akin to having a pushbutton on a car radio.”

As to some features that a station can add through an app, Jacobs listed links to podcasts, videos, news, schedules, social media, the last-five-songs, places for listeners to post pictures from station events and more...

Listening to Internet radio with mobile devices is a parade that’s well underway. The trick for radio is to get out in front of it.

Listening to Internet radio was up 50% last year, according to AccuStream Research’s updated report. Nearly 80% of that listening is to Shoutcast and Pandora. More than 40% of all listening last year was to mobile.
Streaming audio ad and subscription revenues were up 64% to $465 million, with the ad spend surpassing subscription revenues for the first time, according to the report.

Where would modern radio stations be without the Internet? As online increasingly becomes part of everyday life, this is becoming a key question for many broadcasters, aspiring to utilize this relatively new platform to their best advantage.

Today even the smallest radio stations have developed their own Web presence. Some have even managed successfully to monetize the “long tail” of additional listening and interaction that results. However, despite investment in websites and online audio content, a fundamental problem remains: how to link the online world with real-time broadcasting, which for the vast majority of listeners remains their core platform and one that has thus far tended to remain stubbornly offline.

Largely disconnected from the Internet in all its various forms, traditional radio has difficulty in taking advantage of the various interactivity and other benefits the online world can offer — and which audiences increasingly have come to expect.

RadioDNS is targeting these issues.

Earlier this month Absolute Radio, as part of its ad campaign Faces For Radio, ran a Promoted Trends and Promoted Tweets campaign on Twitter, designed to promote its no repeat guarantee pledge, showing off the range of music it plays throughout the day.
Using the popular hashtag #nowplaying, which is used by Twitter users to show what song they are playing (whether using Spotify, iTunes, Radio or physical formats), Absolute Radio presenters asked listeners throughout the day to tweet using #nowplaying, @absoluteradio and also the song playing to be able to win a prize.

 

The activity drove over 76,000 tweets using the @absoluteradio Twitter handle that day

NPD’s “Annual Music Study” reveals increasing numbers of consumers adopting online radio options to listen to, and discover, music.

In 2011, 43 percent of U.S. Web users chose to listen to music via Pandora, Slacker, Yahoo! Music, and other online radio options, which is 9 percentage points higher than the previous year. At the same time listening to music on AM/FM radio stayed relatively steady (84 percent) in 2011, as did CD listening (74 percent).

While 42 percent of Web users listened to free radio options in 2011, just 3 percent paid to listen to radio online.

The draw of unlimited online-radio listening and music discovery is also much more compelling to consumers than performing the same activities on social media sites, according to NPD. Just 12 percent of Web users listened to music integrated into Facebook or other social networks by services like Spotify and MOG.

11th annual RAIN Summit this Sunday in Vegas

As you know, RAIN Summit West is this Sunday, once again a "co-located event" of what looks to be an eventful NAB Show. And as always, there are lots of big announcements made in the days before and at the convention. Here are a few RAIN readers should find interesting:

- BRS Media Inc., which administers the ".fm" and ".am" top-level domains (TLDs), has submitted "an extensive, comprehensive and detailed" application to administer a new ".radio" TLD

- Triton Digital has updated its Advertising Platform, featuring the ability to target for pre-roll and instream ads by listeners' specific mobile device or country (or many other pre-specified custom criteria).

- Liquid Compass and AdsWizz will unveil new features for Liquid Compass' LC Pro 2.0 streaming player (here), designed to increase both ad opportunities and interactivity. The new features include a "portable" "Now Playing" widget, custom couponing ("daily deals"), custom polls (surveys), on-the-fly advertiser "takeovers" of the player, and client controls to more quickly customize the look of the player.

- Abacast has announced its "Personalized Live Radio" service, combining broadcast radio's "live and local" content with music-personalization features found on Net-only radio services

The key for radio isn’t to imagine a world that needs more radio, it’s to imagine a world that needs more compelling content and more ways to play with that content across each consumer’s social graph...

Radio’s challenge is not to adapt its legacy technology for new devices, since this requires consumers to demand those devices because of that technology (look how well that worked for those HD table radios). Its challenge is to create content that demands attention and nurture that attention across platforms and devices where consumers already spend their time.

So begin by asking these questions:

1. How can we divide our content into chunks – mini-brands, where each chunk is its own attention magnet (if this sounds like it favors morning shows, public radio, talk radio, and sports, that’s no accident)?

2. How can we make each chunk as compelling and attractive to an audience as possible?

3. How can we inspire fans to share their passion for that content across all available platforms – the ones where consumers already live and the ones consumers already want to use?

4. How can we extend each chunk – each mini-brand – in an organic way that maximizes both consumer involvement and revenue, no matter what that extension looks like and whether or not it is “radio”?

5. What is the monetization strategy which links all these pieces together?

Stop playing defense, radio.

Start playing offense.

Rien ne va plus à la radio. Après la fusion avec France 24, les antennes monde et Afrique s'unissent. Avec une grille “allégée” qui rallume la guerre des syndicats, mine le moral des troupes.

 

La nouvelle équipe en place souhaite porter une grille renouvelée dans le courant du mois de juin. A ce moment-là, l'antenne Afrique et l'antenne Monde de RFI ne feront plus qu'une — africaine, puisque l'idée est de concentrer les efforts sur le continent noir, pourvoyeur de la grande majorité des auditeurs. Concrètement, cela veut dire que les fidèles de RFI, basés à Moscou ou à Rio, et habitués aux informations internationales de la radio, risquent désormais de ne plus y entendre que des programmes centrés sur l'actualité africaine.

 

D'autres choix drastiques entraînent d'autres changements. Le journaliste Jean-Baptiste Placca, qui assurait un éditorial de politique africaine, en est dépossédé. Alain Genestar, l'ancien patron de Paris Match, est censé cesser la chronique politique hebdomadaire qu'il signait depuis des années. Une émission dédiée au cinéma disparaît avec sa présentatrice, Catherine Ruelle, qui a choisi de quitter l'entreprise. Une hebdomadaire littéraire va devenir collection d'été. « On a l'impression qu'Alain de Pouzilhac, qui déteste RFI, s'efforce de faire le plus de dégâts possibles avant l'échéance électorale, avance Daniel Desesquelle. Pour que les changements soient irréversibles, et qu'on ne puisse pas reconstruire ensuite ». Une grille de programmes définitive est attendue pour septembre ou octobre, celle qui se met en place n'étant rien d'autre, selon Anne-Marie Capomaccio, qu'une grille d'été.

Et dire que l'emménagement de la station dans ses nouveaux locaux, qui doit permettre de rapprocher sa rédaction de celle de France 24, n'est pas encore achevé...  Selon nos informations, le 26 mars dernier, par une température extérieure inférieure à 20 degrés, il faisait 28°C dans les bureaux situés à l'ombre — et un minimum de 32°C dans les parties au soleil protégées par des stores. Les travaux sur la climatisation, qui devaient précéder les poses de dalles, de moquettes et de peinture, n'ont semble-t-il pas encore été effectués...

Digital music subscription service Rdio just took one small step closer towards launching in the UK, after PRS for Music, the organisation that represents the rights of 85,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in the UK, announced a licensing agreement with the music streaming service.
Launched in 2010 in San Francisco by Janus Friis, who also co-founded Skype, Rdio is currently available in the US, Canada, Brazil, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal and Denmark, but this latest deal will enable PRS to rake in royalties whenever UK artists’ music are accessed via Rdio in Europe.
