Talking to machines is primitive and frustrating, but it's gonna be huge

At Cooper, we care a lot about how to make technology work for humans. For much of our history, that has meant figuring out how to help people design great products for mice and keyboards, and then touch devices, and then for servicesthat involve many screens (or no screens at all!) and people over time.

And now there is this new interest in talking to computers. A lot of hype! In reality, conversational UIs are a primitive and frustrating experience. But they will end up being a much bigger deal than most people think.

Conversational UIs are a new medium for a big chunk of the UX profession (there are plenty of veterans, but it’s new to a lot of folks). Cooper’s goal this year is to explore and help refine the best practices for the industry, the way we have for 25 years. We’ve teamed up with the venerable SF-based design/dev shop Carbon Five to design and develop conversational applications for consumers and enterprises, starting with Alexa skills for Amazon Echo. You’ll see more in the Cooper Journal about that collaboration in the coming weeks and months.

But I also want to take a few minutes to describe why we think talking/chatting computers is a big deal, why we think voice UIs and conversational applications aren’t a flash in the pan, a passing fad.

Imagine, for instance, if instead of Alexa’s robotic voice updating you on the weather—or pulling in a one-size-fits-all NPR news radio stream, Amazon’s Echo devices could weave in personalized, relevant audio snippets from actual broadcasts. Audioburst’s existing integrations with Alexa and Google Assistant aren’t quite that tight, but the potential here is huge, especially in the escalating voice platform war.

Perclus de dettes et ayant épuisé ses liquidités, SoundCloud, l’une des plates-formes de partage de musique les plus populaires de la planète, dont la particularité consiste à être alimentée par sa communauté de fans, risquait de sombrer dans le cimetière des start-up indépendantes n’ayant jamais réussi à trouver leur rentabilité. Vendredi 11 août, au cours d’une réunion de crise, ses actionnaires (les fondateurs, Union Square Ventures, Doughty Hanson et Atlantic Technology) ont évité la faillite en avalisant un plan de la dernière chance. Ils ont accepté de perdre 40 % de la valeur de leurs actions.

Report establishes New York City as the epicenter of the podcasting industry with explosive growth in podcasts and 33 percent job growth

The number of podcasts made by NYC-based networks is up nearly 75 percent from two years ago, driving 1.3 billion downloads last year

August 14, 2017 — New York City's Media and Entertainment Commissioner Julie Menin today announced the release of the first-ever comprehensive study of New York City's podcasting industry. Titled "New York City, The Podcasting Capital," the report firmly establishes New York as the epicenter of the burgeoning industry, with more podcasts making New York City their home than any other city. It details recent dramatic gains in the number of podcasts, jobs, listenership, advertising sales, and leased office space. A deep talent pool, and the density of advertising companies, technology firms, and digital media organizations have all helped solidify New York's primacy in the nascent industry.

Based on interviews with dozens of industry players and a months-long survey of relevant market data, the report's findings include:

New York City podcasters provide much of the content for global listeners of audio news and entertainment on demand. The top four NYC-based networks produce almost 200 podcasts – up nearly 75 percent from 2015.
Programs produced by the five top New York City-based networks – WNYC Studios, Gimlet, Slate, Panoply, and Midroll Media – resulted in over 1.3 billion downloads in 2016 – up from an annual average of 199 million downloads between 2013 and 2015.
Employment at the city's top podcast networks has increased 33 percent, from about 450 people in 2015 to about 600 people in early 2017 – a number that could double by the end of the year. Podcast job growth far outpaces employment increases in the advertising, television, and radio industries.
This exponential growth in NYC-produced podcasts has lured over 200 active advertisers, who have found podcast listeners uniquely attentive.
Podcast advertising grew 48 percent between 2015 and 2016. 2016 podcast ad revenue was about $167 million, according to research firm Bridge Ratings. The total podcast ad spend could near $250 million in 2017 and $395 million by 2020, it is estimated.
NYC podcast networks have expanded their office space from about 100,000 square feet in 2014-2015 to almost 140,000 square feet today. If podcast studios built at media companies such as BuzzFeed, The New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal are included, the square footage doubles that amount.

Nearly a quarter of Americans listen to podcasts once a month, and Acast has found new insights into their listening habits.

You might think Virginians would listen to news and politics podcasts the most, but that honor goes to New Jerseyans. And while Texans are all business, Pennsylvanians are all about their pop culture.

Acast, a podcast streaming platform and distributor, has discovered some new insights about podcast listeners like the genres people listen to most frequently in the states that do the most listening.

In June, Acast measured more than 14 million listens in the U.S., including both streams and downloads, which creates a more accurate number for its marketing partners.

Facebook, Snapchat, Google, Twitter… les nouvelles plateformes de contenus sont en passe de détrôner les médias traditionnels aux Etats-Unis. Une relation de dépendance qui se vérifie également en France. «D'un simple de rôle de distribution initialement, ces nouvelles plateformes décident désormais aujourd'hui les contenus sur lesquels leurs audiences doivent être attentifves, et qui est payé pour cette attention», explique le rapport «La presse sur le modèle des plateformes : comment la Silicon Valley a réorganisé le journalisme»* écrit par des enseignants de la Columbia Journalism School.

Pour les sites éditeurs américains, mais aussi Européens, se pose en effet un dilemme : doivent-ils maintenir à grand frais leur infrastructure de publisher avec des audiences toujours plus éclatées par la concurrence des plateformes, tout en gardant un contrôle sur leurs revenus? Ou doivent-ils, au contraire, céder leur contrôle sur les données et sur les formats publicitaires aux nouveaux acteurs, en échange de voir leurs audiences croître grâce aux palteformes telle Facebook? Ce rapport de 94 pages tentent d'apporter un état des lieux de ces liaisons dangereuses entre médias et nouvelles plateformes.

We reviewed Google Home’s new Assistant app discovery features yesterday. Today, we are looking at the new rating system for Google Assistant apps. Amazon rolled out its Alexa skill store and ratings in December 2015. At the time, there we just over 100 skills and now there are more than 18,000. Time from launch to a skill store with user ratings: 13 months.

Google now has over 500 Assistant apps (i.e. the Google equivalent of an Alexa skill) and has rolled out its app store and user ratings just 10 months after general availability of Google Home and about six months after Google Assistant became widely available on smartphones running Android OS. Discovery is one challenge, offering users a signal of skill quality is another. The ratings systems are designed to provide one data point based on user reviews.

National Public Radio may not seem like an obvious media brand when it comes to being an early AI adopter, but the 47-year-old news organization has moved quickly in the space. Its news, music and storytelling app, NPR One, is evidently infused with machine learning, offering listeners curated options based on their shown preferences. And the organization extended the reach of NPR One’s content by inking a deal with Amazon Alexa in February. Since then, the phrase, “Alexa, play NPR News Now,” has been regularly heard in 400,000 homes that use the service. Additionally, NPR One has functionalities that its corporate sponsors have appreciated for some time; in particular, letting brands get extended audio mobile messaging when consumers want to hear more.


“They can press a button on the phone to hear more about what [carmaker] Kia is doing around innovation,” says Meg Goldthwaite, NPR’s marketing chief. Is voice-enabled digital advertising—where the listener asks for more Kia content and perhaps even fills out a test-drive form—right around the bend for NPR? “It’s absolutely possible,” she says.

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are on the precipice of rapid expansion as global revenues for the AR/VR market are projected to increase by at least 100% over the next four years, according to a recent report from IDC.

Moreover, total spending on AR/VR products and services is expected to grow at an annualized rate of 113% to reach $215 billion in 2021, up from $11 billion in 2017. The rapid growth is in part due to the significant investments and innovations led by tech giants such as Apple, Google, and Facebook, including tools, platforms, and services, as they seek to lead the adoption of the next big computing platform.  

The US will likely be the dominant region in terms of total spending in AR/VR with an estimated $3 billion in 2017. And although the US is expected to pioneer initial growth in the space, the regions that will experience the fastest growth through the five-year period are Canada, Central and Eastern Europe, Western Europe, and the US at annualized growth rates of 145%, 133%, 121%, and 120%, respectively.

Increasing demand for the nascent technology could have rippling effects across numerous industries. In particular, there are three segments projected to catalyze AR and VR investment and adoption.

The largest industry use cases for AR and VR in 2017 will be related to product showcasing in the retail segment. The retail industry will invest $422 million in AR and VR. Retailers could use AR technology to enable users to utilize their cameras to overlay digital representations of products onto rooms in their homes, or VR to show products in a store catalog, for example.
Manufacturing, which includes discrete and process manufacturing, will see significant growth in 2017. The manufacturing segment will invest $309 million in AR and VR during the year. AR can assist in the maintenance of equipment — for instance, viewing a machine’s status simply by looking at it via an AR display can help service technicians visualize and identify problems ahead of the job.
AR and VR games will largely influence the consumer segment. This segment was among the first to be impacted by the introduction of AR and VR. By 2021, total spending in the consumer segment is forecast to reach $9.5 billion.
