Pop-Up Radio Archive : opensource software to help producers preserve sound

More information: http://www.ischool.berkeley.edu/programs/masters/projects/2012/popuparchive

The Pop-Up Radio Archive is a MIMS Final Project by School of Information master's students Christen Penny, Bailey R. Smith, and Anne Wootton.

Independent radio producers hold culturally significant collections that lack archival systems and structured metadata. These producers lack resources and technical expertise, but face constant pressure to meet demand for their content using new web technologies and platforms.

Solution: We are working with San-Francisco based radio producers, The Kitchen Sisters, to integrate WordPress and Omeka, a web publishing platform, as a scalable solution for broadcast archival content. Building from a pilot of 33 broadcast episodes and hundreds of related media files, our system will give producers an easy access point for uploading their audio content with metadata that is semantically meaningful and conforms to established industry standards. Using web services, sound files are seamlessly uploaded to the Internet Archive for permanent preservation, and producers are given the option of sharing their content through SoundCloud for public consumption.
