Online radio crosses mobile threshold + Extra Slacker video about most complete music service on Earth

New Triton Digital listening data confirms it’s a mobile world for online radio.  More than half of internet radio listening (56%) occurred on mobile devices in March, up from 46% one year earlier.   Triton also says Pandora’s mobile listening cap is paying off for rival webcasters.

Mobile consumption was the fastest growing online audio segment in March.  But pureplays are growing mobile audiences faster than broadcasters.  Mobile listening to pureplays during the Monday-Sunday, 6am-midnight daypart leapt 23% from February to March while broadcast streams had a 5% increase.  In January, Triton showed broadcast radio streams with an 80/20 split in favor of listening on desktops, while pureplay publishers tracked in the opposite direction with a 70/30 split in favor of mobile listening.

Looking to target the holes in its chief rival’s service, pureplay webcaster Slacker launched a $5.5 million marketing campaign in mid-February.  Based on internet radio ratings for March released yesterday by Triton Digital, the investment is beginning to pay off.  Average Active Sessions during the Monday-Friday, 6am-8pm daypart rocketed up 22% for Slacker, as the webcasters blew past both CBS Radio and Cumulus to rank third among Triton’s domestic top 20.  The increase follows a 3% boost by Slacker in February.  The campaign includes a 30-second online video ad that attempts to reposition Pandora as a repetitive music machine with limited selection and Slacker as more human with playlists created by music experts and a larger music library.

Spotify May Need To Be More ‘Asian’ To Dominate Region | TechCrunch

Spotify May Need To Be More ‘Asian’ To Dominate Region | TechCrunch | Radio 2.0 (Fr & En) | Scoop.it

Asia’s fragmented music fanbase and subscription habits may stand between Spotify and its total domination of the region, or at least so its competitors hope.

The music streaming service recently launched in the Asian countries of Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. When we spoke to Spotify’s head of new markets in Asia-Pacific, Sriram Krishnan, he was evasive on how extensive the company’s Asian catalog was, saying that the company is working with labels here and does feature local music, but emphasized that “mainstream” (read: US-originated) music is big here, and that catalog Spotify has plenty of.

But several Asian-originated competitors say that their experiences here have been quite different. Taiwan-based KKBOX was launched in the region in 2005, and is available in its home country, as well as Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan, with plans for other Asian countries, said representative, Inman Lin.

Industry key players join forces to form first Audio Council | IAB UK

Industry key players join forces to form first Audio Council | IAB UK | Radio 2.0 (Fr & En) | Scoop.it
n acknowledgment of the growing significance of audio within the digital landscape, the Internet Advertising Bureau UK (IAB) announces the formation of its first Audio Council.

IAB councils, of which there are now 16, are made up of likeminded and passionate experts from all areas of the digital landscape, with a range of expertise and skill sets.

The Audio Council is represented by online pure players Spotify, YouTube, Myspace, Last.fm, BlinkBox and Mixcloud; media owners Absolute Radio, Bauer and Global Radio; audio creative specialists Red Apple Creative; market research specialist AudienceNet; and radio advertising and creative specialists RadioWorks and Maple Street Studios.

Given the importance of music to consumers’ digital experiences, the IAB anticipates sustained growth in the years ahead and felt that there was no better time than now to launch a dedicated working group for this sector.

The IAB Audio Council's three key aims are:

To further educate the market; To help develop the future business models of the audio sector; To increase the value of the online audio advertising sector.

A key output for the group in 2013 will be a research project in conjunction with AudienceNet designed to show the scale of the audience for online audio and to examine consumer attitudes to advertising within this growing space.

The IAB will also be developing a new section on its website to feature case studies, research and videos designed to highlight the possibilities for brands looking to advertise in the online audio space.

The Council will meet on a quarterly basis to build on a number of initiatives completed in 2012 including a white paper which examined how consumers feel about advertising within an online audio environment.

The IAB’s Editorial Manager and Chair of the Council, Stuart Aitken, comments: “At the IAB we're always interested in working closely with key players of all sizes within sectors where we see great potential. Audio is one sector that we expect to experience enormous development in the coming months and years.

"This group is represented by some of the most exciting companies in not just the audio space, but in the digital sector as a whole. I am looking forward to working with all of them in the coming year."

Spotify, Deezer Inactive Accounts (70%) Are Just Part of Doing Business

Spotify, Deezer Inactive Accounts (70%) Are Just Part of Doing Business | Radio 2.0 (Fr & En) | Scoop.it

Inactive accounts represented 70% of Spotify's registered accounts at the end of 2011 and 73% of Deezer's registered accounts this year. [Update: Deezer CEO Axel Dauchez tweeted on March 29 that Deezer’s inactive users account for 62% of registered users.] The important point here, writes Mulligan, is that "streaming services as a whole have a problem with churn." The term churn means loss of customers. Churn is expensive to companies because it is always more expensive to gain a new customer than to keep an existing customer.

But worrying about an unconverted, inactive group of registered users breaks with the logic of the Internet. Inactive users are just a part of doing business online. Getting people to register is just the first step. Not everyone will become a frequent visitor or paying customer. As Mulligan later noted in an update to the blog post -- after an exchange on Twitter with Spotify CEO Daniel Ek -- "this is a problem that affects all businesses that have a free tier that requires registration."

Inactive accounts are a part of doing business for many online services. For instance, a 2012 study found 70% of Facebook pages are inactive. Last year Semiocast found that 73% of Twitter accounts are inactive.

Pandora Founder on Digital Media, Internet Radio

Tim Westergren discovered a need everyone shares, and he applied his creativity and innovation through entrepreneurship to meet that need.

That’s the message Westergren delivered when he sat down with Heritage’s Jackie Anderson and spoke to The Bloggers Briefing to discuss how he founded his visionary company, Pandora Radio, that now dominates 80 percent of the emerging Internet radio industry.

“I was really inspired by how could I sort of harness technology to make life easier for working musicians,” said Westergren. “[Pandora] is a paradigmatic shift in what radio is.”

He started the company after working himself as a musician in the film industry. As a film composer, he began grouping songs according to their construction and impact on the listener so he could better meet the musical tastes of the film directors he worked with on a day-to-day basis. “I had the idea one day to try and codify that, and build a discovery technology,” he said.

He called this discovery technology “the music genome project,” a mathematical sorting product that could analyze thousands of songs across 450 different dimensions, including melody, harmony, rhythm and instrumentation, and group them according to each song’s unique musical “DNA.”

“We literally did it on pencil and paper, believe it or not, in the beginning, to capture a song’s sound, and then by marrying that to mathematics, to an algorithm essentially, we could literally compute the proximity of one song to another,” he said.

Now the company catalogues more than 100,000 artists and 1 million songs, 98.5 percent of which played in the last 30 days, according to Westergren. The service draws about 70 million unique listeners each month.

The reason he believes accounts for Pandora’s explosive word-of-mouth growth since its release in 2005? Because it addresses a problem everyone has. “We all love music to a greater or lesser degree, but we all have a hard time finding music that we like easily,” he said.

“As you get older, radio does not play your music any more,” he said. “I think what Pandora does, and is doing, is reconnecting people to their music.”

All about the Multiplaform Radio presentation of James O'Brien from ABC Austalia at Radio Days Europe 2013

All about the Multiplaform Radio presentation of James O'Brien from ABC Austalia at Radio Days Europe 2013 | Radio 2.0 (Fr & En) | Scoop.it

This is the presentation I made at Radio Days Europe, March 18, 2013 as part of a session on pop up radio stations. The slide you can see behind you now is a snapshot of the homepage of ABC Radio Australia.

But today I’ll be telling you a little about just one of the stations the ABC operates....

The word of the year is definitely “pop up” – pop up shops, pop up galleries, pop up restaurants, and so on, and ABC Extra is a pop-up station. I’d estimate it’s operational for about half the year, and the rest of the time it’s dead. But when it’s up and running, the ABC is using ABC Extra to push the creative boundaries of radio, and hopefully connect with our audiences, and with new audiences, in ways we can’t otherwise do with our mainstream local and national networks. You know how sometimes you have a great idea, but then reality sets in, or your manager says “no”, and suddenly you realise there’s no airtime available for your great idea? Well, that’s what ABC Extra is all about...

The evolution of the Internet has changed not just the way in which people listen to music, but also how musicians and artists should communicate with their most loyal fans.

Album sales continue to flatline, but music streaming services such as Spotify, Rdio and Deezer have shown that there’s still a huge market for offering a viable alternative to illegal downloads.

Fabrizio Gentile, managing director of Deezer in the Benelux region and Dutch music producer and DJ Ferry Corsten took part in a panel at The Next Web Conference in Amsterdam to talk about curation, global reach and the advantages of using social media.

How Can Radio Compete in an On-Demand World? | Radio World

How Can Radio Compete in an On-Demand World? | Radio World | Radio 2.0 (Fr & En) | Scoop.it

In a world in which everyone wants what they want delivered when they want it, coupled with the open dashboard and near-infinite bandwidth, there are a number of things radio can do to remain relevant.

That’s according to Radio and Internet Radio Newsletter Publisher Kurt Hanson.

The new Netflix trend to release all episodes at once of a video program series is a good reminder for both traditional AM/FM as well as Internet radio that you need to step up your game to compete, according to Hanson in his annual “State of the Internet Radio Industry” address.

Hanson also pointed to the morphing role of the smartphone, which, for many people, has replaced their camera, alarm clock, voice recorder, address book, calculator and navigation unit.

The Arbitron and Edison Research report “Infinite Dial” data suggests weekly use of Internet radio is now up to 86 million listeners; the amount has more than tripled over the past five years, noted Hanson.

Will Apple enter the radio business? Hanson said if so that “might be great for all of us.” He likened it to a battle of the brands that raises the visibility of the entire product category.

Operators key for subscription music, says Deezer CEO

VIDEO INTERVIEW: Axel Dauchez, chief executive of online music subscription service Deezer (pictured), said a “critical mass” around mobile music can only be achieved through partnerships with operators.

“To move from download piracy to subscription is a change of behaviour, and to apply that to a country you need critical mass,” he told Mobile World Livein a recent video interview.

Deezer has struck a number of partnerships with big-name operators, including Orange, Deutsche Telekom and Telenor. A Deezer subscription is bundled in with offers from operators in 26 countries, Dauchez added.

The Deezer service offers unlimited access to around 20 million cloud-based tracks, from which users can download their favourites.

For the service to be profitable, however, Dauchez said “reasonable acquisition costs” and “sustainable margins” are vital.
