Deezer hopes to find a partner to help break into the US market | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

inShare

Deezer, a French streaming music service available in 160 countries, is looking at coming to the US as well. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, CEO Axel Dauchez said that the company started talking "months ago" with potential partners in the US. "We are looking for a partner in the US," he said, "maybe an operator or a blue-chip company, that is able to provide us with a significant volume of subscribers." If Deezer did come to the US, it would be competing with Pandora, Rdio, Spotify, and many similar radio or streaming services.

From advertising to 'moodvertising' 'I think audio is clearly the engine of emotion' Pete Blackshaw, Global Head/Digital & Social Media at Nestlé #CES2017

From advertising to 'moodvertising' 'I think audio is clearly the engine of emotion' Pete Blackshaw, Global Head/Digital & Social Media at Nestlé #CES2017 | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Nestlé, the food group, believes that tapping into the power of digital audio services can help brands engage consumers using the power of "moodvertising".

Pete Blackshaw, the Global Head/Digital & Social Media at Nestlé, discussed this topic at CES 2017, an event held in Las Vegas by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA).

"I think we're moving from advertising to 'moodvertising', where we can leverage the context of the mood – of the consumer feeling, of the context, of the moment – to deliver a unique story and emotion, tied to advertising, that we know can only have a positive impact," he said. (For more details, read Warc's free-to-access report: Nestlé's Blackshaw explores the future of audio advertising.)

"I think audio is clearly the engine of emotion. Emotion inspires; emotion motivates; emotion helps us see possibilities that we might not rationally envision … We simply need to really dissect the space and really understand: What are those moments that can be exploited?"

Building on this theme, he suggested Nestlé is at an "early stage" of exploring this terrain, but can already draw on learnings from various test programs that "about a dozen" of its brands have conducted with different audio platforms.

How The Economist turns social visitors into subscribers - Digiday

How The Economist turns social visitors into subscribers - Digiday | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
For The Economist, as print ad revenues have fallen and digital ad revenues haven’t plugged the gap, the focus has been on increasing profitability by growing digital subscriptions.

That means The Economist is very clear about what it wants out of platforms: to reach non-subscribers and give them samples of Economist content to eventually turn into more subscribers. Over the year, it has grown social media followers by 25 percent to now reach 44 million across platforms, mostly Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and LinkedIn. It has seen a surge of subscribers, first after Brexit and more recently after Donald Trump’s election. In the last year, digital subs have grown by nearly 14 percent from 303,500 to 345,500. (The Economist’s overall subscription base is 1.5 million.)

“We’re constantly debating how much content to give away,” said Michael Brunt, The Economist’s CMO and managing director of circulation. “If you’re too generous, there’s no point in subscribing. We have the other view: We are generous; we work hard to distribute content on many platforms to give a flavor.”

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos sees the music industry's next 'gigantic growth' coming from devices like Echo

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos sees the music industry's next 'gigantic growth' coming from devices like Echo | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
The music business has lost billions of dollars over the past few years, but Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is bullish about its future.
One big reason: the wider use of voice-activated home devices, like Amazon's Echo.

"At this point in the marriage of voice-activation technology with music, I can tell you it’s already working," Bezos said in a new interview with Billboard.

"The next gigantic growth area for the music industry is the home."

Bezos said voice-controlled devices like the Echo and its Alexa technology make the music-playing experience simple and "friction-free," allowing more people to listen to music more frequently.

“If you make things easier, people do more of it," he said.

FROM AIRWAVES TO EARBUDS – Informed and Engaged – Medium

FROM AIRWAVES TO EARBUDS – Informed and Engaged – Medium | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

Podcasting and other forms of on-demand digital audio are growing. Edison Research reports that, based on a survey conducted in January and February 2016, an estimated 155 million Americans over 12 had listened to some form of online radio in the preceding month, and 57 million had listened to a podcast.

The runaway success of the podcast “Serial,” which originated within the public radio show “This American Life,” helped spark interest in the medium, which is reaching new audiences, giving rise to new voices and creating new revenue streams.

CONCLUSION

Podcasting and on-demand audio is a rapidly evolving medium, ripe for experimentation and innovation and well suited to creative and far-reaching public interest applications. Many of podcasting’s most successful programming is crafted by public radio producers or by people who have recently left public radio for podcasting startups. Yet the public radio system, one of the nation’s most utilized and trusted sources of news and information, is not yet well positioned to take advantage of deep shifts underway as the rising, younger audience moves from broadcast to mobile and digital audio platforms. Competitors loom large.

Knight Foundation investments have made some significant strides in this context, but they have also encountered headwinds. While digital upstarts in which Knight has invested are growing audiences and lighting a path to new forms of sustainability, they remain in early stages, with real questions about their full growth potential. Efforts to transform the larger public media system, especially through Project Carbon, have yielded progress and also illuminated larger challenges in moving the NPR structure toward an adequate digital backbone.

All of this is happening in a dynamic context, whose future may be hard to predict. The demand for quality news and audio content remains firmly fixed across generations. The best model for meeting these demands and the point of sustainability is an open question.

Knight and other grantmakers across the U.S. can benefit from conversations with local and national media makers to identify opportunities for new impact as audiences’ listening patterns shift to on-demand. Today’s dynamic environment makes timing especially good to bring new voices and new audiences to public interest programming and to help lower barriers to entry so that journalism and public information programming can flourish as this key delivery platform expands.

Audio ads are beginning to rival TV ads in terms of reach. The percentage of US adults who listen to podcasts has risen from 11% to 36% in the last decade; the number of monthly digital radio listeners has jumped from 93 million to 181 million, in half that time; and, Spotify broke the 100 million user mark in June last year (2016). The benefits of audio ads are there for all to see (or hear!). This edition of ExchangeWire’s Now & Next looks at what developments need to happen to make audio a stalwart in the programmatic budget.
