[Infographie] Stratégie mobile : web app ou app mobile ? | FrenchWeb.fr | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

OnlineAudio increases again: Pureplayers +10%, Simulcasters +19,5% YtY

Triton Digital's Webcast Metrics have just been released for June 2016. This monitors selected online radio listening, and is a useful bellweather for the industry as a whole. Here are some of the highlights:
Online audio is increasing - in terms of 'average active sessions', pureplays (like Pandora) are up by 10% year-on-year, while broadcast simulcasts are up by 19.5%.
Mobile is becoming more important - 77.6% of total listening is now done on a mobile device. That's increased from 74.4% in the last six months, and is showing slow increases month-by-month.
iOS leads the way - 40% of all mobile listening was delivered over iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad). Android was responsible for 31% of all listening.

How Gimlet hopes to win the podcasting arms race - Digiday

How Gimlet hopes to win the podcasting arms race - Digiday | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
That first season had a happy ending. The 2-year-old podcasting business, now home to six shows, relies on a mixture of host-read advertising, creative services for brands and membership revenue to make money.

It expects to exceed its 2015 revenue of $2.2 million by “multiples” this year, per Lieber, and it’s currently using a recent round of venture funding to fuel expansion and stay competitive in a growing arms race to snap up as much top-tier podcasting talent as possible.

“The skill set needed to produce arresting audio is in demand,” Lieber said. “We want to be the best place to support creative visions.”

Despite (or maybe because) it’s a relic from the earlier days of the internet, podcasting works differently from the rest of the digital media space. For starters, it remains a niche format. Just over half of Americans are even aware of the term “podcasting,” and an estimated 57 million Americans listen to one every month, according to Edison Research.

How Virtual Reality Will Change The Music Industry

How Virtual Reality Will Change The Music Industry | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
After spending two weeks with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets, it’s clear that virtual reality will completely reshape the human experience. These devices transport you to another world. They will usher in an alternate reality, adding a new perspective to everything in modern life, and a physical interaction to every experience. Gaming will lead the charge, as well as cinematic narratives, but what about music?

Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) have been around for over 20 years, but even with the upgrades to 64bit software, better interfaces, improved performance and processing, and higher resolution displays – they are still fairly flat and linear, no matter how many drop shadows and embossed buttons are added.

We’ve put instruments in a flat box, replicating the best software versions of physical instruments – but there were trade-offs. Even if you perfectly matched the sound quality, you lose the actual human contact: the vibration of the guitar’s body against your chest, the resonance of a piano’s soundboard, and the weight of the keys in your fingers. These elements change the expressiveness of instruments, and steer your ideas in different directions. Beyond the haptics of the instrument, the workflow also changed. It became easier to save presets and copy existing sounds, without having to patch sounds together with cables, and much easier to play instruments that took years to master. Companies like Artiphon even advocate that “mastery is dead.”

Now we are faced with a new platform that could change everything - how we consume, create, perform, share, collaborate, learn, and teach music. Let’s look at some ideas and predictions for the years to come, and how it might influence your music.

Amazon wants to sell a cheaper music subscription service that will only work on its Echo player

Amazon wants to sell a cheaper music subscription service that will only work on its Echo player | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Amazon wants to launch a music subscription service that would work the same way services from Apple, Spotify and many others work: $10 a month, for all the music you can stream, anywhere you want to stream it.

But Amazon is also working on a second service that would differ in two significant ways from industry rivals: It would cost half the price, and it would only work on Amazon’s Echo hardware.

Industry sources say Amazon would like to launch both services in September, but has yet to finalize deals with major music labels and publishers. One sticking point, sources say, is whether Amazon will sell the cheaper service for $4 or $5 a month.

Sirius owner savages Spotify business model, warns of Amazon 'commoditization' - Music Business Worldwide

Sirius owner savages Spotify business model, warns of Amazon 'commoditization' - Music Business Worldwide | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Maffei confirmed to investors that, should Liberty eventually swoop for a streaming music service like Pandora, he would look to fold it into the operation of Sirius XM, rather than holding it separate.

But the exec also made it very clear he was no great believer in the business model of Spotify and other standalone music rivals – while warning of the effect Amazon Prime was set to have on the streaming audio market.

“In what we consider the stream [music] subscription space, you have several big players who are entering and are likely to further commoditize the market,” said Maffei (pictured).

“SPOTIFY DID SOMETHING LIKE $3.54 OF ARPU PER MONTH WITH 84% OF CONTENT COSTS… THAT SOUNDS LIKE A VERY HARD BUSINESS TO ME.”

HybridRadio : NextRadio Seeks Revenue Tipping Point | Radio World | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
The developers of the NextRadio application feel they are out of start-up mode. They believe their efforts to monetize the “hybrid radio” app will take hold in 2017 as more wireless providers activate chips enabling FM tuners in their smartphones to receive local radio signals.

The project appears to be at an important time of transition. To date, NextRadio has been an expense rather than a revenue generator for the radio industry, which has paid millions of dollars to Sprint to help kick-start its rollout. That seminal three-year agreement expires this month, and NextRadio has been in arrears with Sprint; it is working with broadcasters and others to fund its multimillion-dollar obligation. Now it hopes to build a business around ad revenue sharing; it recently secured its first national advertiser.

Pandora to Launch On-Demand Streaming Service

Pandora to Launch On-Demand Streaming Service | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
The granddaddy of internet radio diversifies as it struggles for profitability.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Pandora, the internet radio service, will expand into the on-demand streaming realm dominated by Spotify and Apple Music. Pandora’s new service could be available as soon as next month.

Pandora’s current service, primarily free and advertising-supported, doesn’t allow listeners to pick specific tracks or even artists. Instead, users pick ‘stations’ that automatically select and stream songs based on general similarities. In the U.S. and a handful of other markets, that service operates with a government-mandated license, and Pandora pays rights-holders much lower royalty rates than on-demand services like Spotify.

“TheWaveVR isn’t just simply taking music to VR, they are radically evolving the possibilities for how artists reach fans and how fans get access to and experience their favorite music.”

TheWaveVR says it will enable people to ‘to view, host and socialize in live and recorded shows worldwide, anytime, anywhere’, which it says will ‘democratize the concert experience’.

It will so so by creating a VR venue in which artists can ‘perform live’ by ‘importing their tracks, customizing the visuals of the venue, and sharing virtual shows’.

Fans can attend via most major VR head mounted displays, which will – says the company – allow them to interact with performers, socialize with friends, dance, paint and more.

“We’re working toward empowering artists and music lovers alike and transforming the way people connect through music by building the world’s first musical metaverse in VR,” said Adam Arrigo, CEO of TheWaveVR.

To be honest this article caught my eye because of two things in the same sentence. Spotify and bankrupt! Also, I had never heard of a blockchain and I was certainly interested in finding out exactly what it was if it truely had the power to bankrupt a top music streaming website. However, after reading this article I gained more than I'd expected. Not only did I gain a thorough knowledge of blockchains, I became a big supporter! I don't think I have ever been this excited about the business side of the music industry. Blockchains certainly paint a a more clear and fair financial future for music industry professionals! Not only Spotify, but everyone involved in the music industry should definitely take notice!

How programmatic is boosting the signal for streaming audio - Digiday [Prepa webinar #rr20pub 20 sept] | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Monetization, incremental revenue generation, automation, targeting, all of this is de rigueur for programmatic. What’s capturing more advertisers attention is the fact that programmatic audio’s rich data set enables a deep level of contextual ad placement. Meaning, because users take their music, podcasts and radio with them throughout their day, marketers are able to tailor their messaging to fit the exact moment.

Take viewability, a topic that’s currently at the top of the IAB’s hit list of issues in digital advertising. Audio ads are largely unskippable on ad supported platforms, and unlike video ads consumers don’t have the option to click away to another channel or screen to ignore them. While not technically “viewable” audio ads have nearly 100% consumer attention.

As ad blocking continues to strip display and video inventory advertisers are turning to audio where ad blocking has yet to establish a foothold. The number of unskippable audio ads on ad supported streaming platforms is expected to grow by 55% over the next two years tracking closely with the projected growth in programmatic audio spending expected in the same time period.

Audio is the last frontier where consumers don’t have an easy option for tuning out targeted ads, making it the song of the summer for many advertisers.
