For survivors of the earthquake, local radio stations became essential to survival in the days after the quake. For many, they were the only way to find out what was going on. They were also a source of entertainment, solace and community feeling – a reminder that survivors were not alone.
Signal FM also played an important role internationally. Their online broadcasts were listened to by many Haitians overseas; foreign embassies gave Signal FM information on how their citizens in Haiti should contact them; and many diaspora radio stations rebroadcast Signal FM’s broadcasts, the report notes (p15)
