Les sites de musique en ligne affinent de plus en plus leurs systèmes de recommandation afin de harponner l’abonné.

Le fossé va-t-il commencer à se réduire entre la radio et les services de streaming, l’écoute musicale en ligne ? C’est en tout cas l’intention de ses deux principaux acteurs en France, Deezer et Spotify, qui déploient en ce moment des nouvelles technologies pour prendre par la main leurs utilisateurs les plus passifs en leur proposant un programme taillé sur mesure à coups d’algorithmes high-tech et de traçage de leurs habitudes.

VIDEO INTERVIEW: Axel Dauchez, chief executive of online music subscription service Deezer (pictured), said a “critical mass” around mobile music can only be achieved through partnerships with operators.

“To move from download piracy to subscription is a change of behaviour, and to apply that to a country you need critical mass,” he told Mobile World Livein a recent video interview.

Deezer has struck a number of partnerships with big-name operators, including Orange, Deutsche Telekom and Telenor. A Deezer subscription is bundled in with offers from operators in 26 countries, Dauchez added.

The Deezer service offers unlimited access to around 20 million cloud-based tracks, from which users can download their favourites.

For the service to be profitable, however, Dauchez said “reasonable acquisition costs” and “sustainable margins” are vital.

LIVE FROM MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS: The CEOs of Foursquare and Deezer described how they are innovating to drive user engagement in today's keynote at Congress....

 

CEO of music service Deezer, Axel Dauchez, said that innovation is “absolutely critical” but knowing where to focus this innovation is key to driving engagement.

Deezer is aiming to make music a “more intense part of users identity”, according to Dauchez, by providing the means for active music discovery and making the relationship between users and artists more tangible by providing exclusive content.

Integrating the live music experience into the service is also an important element that drives user engagement. “We need to provide a better experience of the gig itself,” Dauchez said.

Although taking down barriers to music discovery is important, Dauchez there is also scope to put in some restrictions to drive user engagement. For example, if a band is making an album, they can make some of music available for a short period of time, which drives a significant rise in user engagement.

The subscription marketplace is looking more and more like a two-horse race.

French subscription service Deezer is launching a free, ad-supported version of its music service in more than 150 countries Thursday (Wednesday in the U.S.) and a host of features that suggest market-leading Spotify has serious competition. Deezer now has 3 million subscribers, 1 million more than it had in Octoberand 2 million fewer than Spotify.

CEO Axel Dauchez tells Billboard.biz the launch of the free service "one of the most important investments in the company" because of its ability to expand Deezer's reach. The company estimates it will have a potential audience of 600 million people who use Facebook, have 3G connection and own a smartphone. Users of the free service will be given a period of unlimited listening -- somewhere between one month and a year, depending on the country -- before being limited to two hours of free listening per month.
