JAMAICA: New Technologies Extend Life and "Mobility" of Radio - IPS | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
In the last 25 years, there has been an explosion of commercial radio stations in what Jamaican broadcast professionals describe as "a revolution" that has extended the "mobility of radio".

"There has been a convergence of technologies that has helped to keep radio alive at a time when TV has become a dominant medium,"

But in the words of one veteran, mobile technology has enabled broadcasters to be more responsive to their audiences and made coverage more immediate.

Local Signal FM Radio essential to survival after Haiti's earthquake

For survivors of the earthquake, local radio stations became essential to survival in the days after the quake. For many, they were the only way to find out what was going on. They were also a source of entertainment, solace and community feeling – a reminder that survivors were not alone.

Signal FM also played an important role internationally. Their online broadcasts were listened to by many Haitians overseas; foreign embassies gave Signal FM information on how their citizens in Haiti should contact them; and many diaspora radio stations rebroadcast Signal FM’s broadcasts, the report notes (p15)

Radio Ndeke Luka contributes to democratic debate and reconstruction of the country as part of its public service mission. It is a strong factor for cohesion and balance in the sometimes difficult dialogue between the authorities and the population.

Its news bulletins are also available via a “radio on demand” service on mobile phones. Between March 2009 and March 2010, some 580,000 people used this service to hear Radio Ndeke Luka news, with an average of 48,000 calls per month. In an Internet World, Radio Lives | Ears to Our World @ Radio World | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

More specifically, Ears to Our World works in rural, impoverished and sometimes war-torn or disaster-ravaged parts of the world, places that lack reliable access to electricity –– let alone the Internet –– and where radio often is the only link to the world outside.

The heart of our mission is to allow radio to be used as a tool for education, so we give radios to teachers, who, in turn, use the radios in the classroom and at home to provide real-life, up-to-date feedback about the world around them. Many of our teachers have used radio to teach language skills, social science, basic literacy, music appreciation and much, much more.

Radios to Empower Women - Uganda | LifeLine Energy | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

In Northern Uganda radio is supporting the moves towards peace and reconciliation. Local radio stations carry programming that encourages LRA members, sympathisers and abducted children to engage in dialogue and the peace process. The Amnesty Act is explained and returnees talk about traditional customs of forgiveness and being welcomed home. Returning to traditional lifestyles is difficult, especially for the young who have lost out on education and vocational training and have few skills to manage subsistence farming. Women, who already experience gender discrimination, find it particularly hard to return to normal life.

"Precious Alchemy or Worthless Chemistry" Real Value of Transmedia & Multiplatform [Slides]

A keynote presentation at a recent ABC Radio beyond Radio conference.

The Transmedia Value Proposition Numbers or deeper engagement? Support for linear properties or how users influence and resonate with stories? Is it about creating loyalty, building communities, telling stories in cool ways, making money, extending reach, building trust, promotion, transformation, or all of the above?

Is it really worth the time and effort, too difficult or expensive or not worth the effort”. A journey through real case studies and worthwhile results, marketing vs art, dynamic social vs auteur statement, through inspiring possibilities (situated storytelling, collaborative, generative, parallel synch narrative etc) as new platforms surface - process, multi skill, teams and best ways to make things happen.

The new age of radio: How ICTs are changing rural radio in Africa | Farm Radio International

Report highlights: ICT-enhanced radio
• Weekly SMS alerts sent to the phones of listeners 30 minutes prior to a broadcast can boost radio campaign listenership by up to 20%
• Two-thirds of partner broadcasters identified the internet as the most important ICT tool in the production of farm radio programs.
• Farmers who participated in the design and implementation of radio programming with the help of ICTs were four times more likely than those in passive listening communities to adopt agricultural improvements promoted on the radio.
• 61% of extension agents surveyed said the reach and impact of their extension work was substantially improved because they could be heard on radio programs through call-out programs.

With these recommendations in place, AFRRI’s findings indicate that modern ICTs can enhance the effectiveness of radio as a sustainable, interactive, development tool, ultimately improving the food security of small-scale farmers in Africa.
