JSTOR: Columbia Law Review, Vol. 102, No. 5 (Jun., 2002), pp. 1413-1438

The events of September 11, 2001, have sparked a fierce debate over racial profiling. Many who readily condemned the practice a year ago have had second thoughts. In the wake of September 11, the Department of Justice initiated a program of interviewing thousands of men who arrived in this country in the past two years from countries with an al Qaeda presence--a program that some attack as racial profiling, and others defend as proper law enforcement. In this Essay, Professors Gross and Livingston use that program as the focus of a discussion of the meaning of racial profiling, its use in a variety of contexts, and its relationship to other police practices that take race or ethnicity into account.

Political correctness gone mad? (Canada for its use of the term 'visible minority').(RACE RELATIONS)

CANADA, DESPITE a reputation for being an inclusive society that celebrates diversity, will have to defend itself against UN concerns about racial discrimination--all over a term designed precisely to combat racial discrimination. Next year, for the second time in five years, a delegation from the Ministry of Canadian Heritage will appear before the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, to answer criticisms over Ottawa's use of the term "visible minorities." The committee deems it to be out of step with the "aims and objectives" of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Canada's use of the term "seemed to somehow indicate that whiteness was the standard, all others differing from that being visible," says committee member Patrick Thornberry, a professor of international law at Keele University in Britain.

Why This Black Scholar Feels Sorry for Donald Trump

Why This Black Scholar Feels Sorry for Donald Trump | Racial Profiling | Scoop.it

Like nearly every other black man in America, I've been taken aback by the manner through which Donald Trump has used racist code language to undermine the presidency of Barack Obama. After first wondering if he was born in the United States, Trump has made reference to Obama playing too much basketball to pay attention to the price of gas and even questioned whether or not he truly earned the grades necessary to get into the Harvard Law School.

Even if the president somehow slithered his way into Harvard, I can't imagine an unqualified student being chosen as the first black editor of the Harvard Law Review. Trump's questionable behavior is being called for what it is, for even Bob Schieffer from CBS has made reference to Trump's "ugly strain of racism." Many of Trump's fellow Republicans are running for the hills, as one of their most visible leaders has engaged in incredibly odd behavior.

Being Muslim in America

The article discusses the difficulties of being a Muslim in the United States after the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks. Topics include immigration of Muslims to the U.S. in pursuit of freedoms, a comparison of Muslims in the U.S. compared to Muslims in other countries, and the feelings of Muslim immigrants about discrimination and acceptance into the U.S. society. It is suggested that the positive attributes of Muslim-Americans should be discussed more in U.S. politics instead of negative aspects that focus on radicalization of Islam or extremism.

The Racial Blame Game | Immigration Policy Center

The Racial Blame Game | Immigration Policy Center | Racial Profiling | Scoop.it

Some observers have suggested that immigrants are to blame for the high unemployment rates and low wages experienced by so many minority workers in the United States. However, the best available evidence suggests that immigration is not the cause of dismal employment prospects for American minorities. For instance, cities experiencing the highest levels of immigration tend to have relatively low or average unemployment rates for African Americans. This should come as no surprise; immigrants go where jobs are more plentiful. The grim job market which confronts many minority workers is the product of numerous economic and social factors: the decline of factory employment, the deindustrialization of inner cities, racial discrimination, etc. Immigration plays a very small role.
