The Health Benefits of Keeping and Interacting with Pets

The Health Benefits of Keeping and Interacting with Pets | Animal Husbandry | Scoop.it

The significance of human-animal bond has been accepted the whole time, across cultures, and in modern research. Yet, attachment with pet animals has been undervalued. Ancient people valued the connections between humans and animals. In recent years, increasing research evidence confirms the physiological, psychological, and social benefits of communications with animals and the healing potential of animal-assisted programs in a wide range. Yet the field of mental health has been slow to recognize the importance of these bonds.

If you've never owned a furry pet such as a dog or cat - then you've never experienced the unconditional love between a human and a pet. All a cat or dog ever wanted was food, shelter, and love.  Many other animals were not meant to be caged or handled by humans.  But a dog or cat has been domesticated and are willing to be your best friend if you make them yours.  Save one of these furry animals today and have a friend for life.  There is an emotional healing for humans that have pets - If you want to save a pet - look for a local shelter - many of them have adoption events every month.  All of them need a forever family to love them.  Go to petfinder.com to view all of the lonely dogs and cats waiting for you.

Make Sure Your Cute Little Bunny is Not an Exotic Pet

Make Sure Your Cute Little Bunny is Not an Exotic Pet | Animal Husbandry | Scoop.it

When people hear the term “Exotic pet” they automatically think of a Capuchin monkey, an alligator or a raccoon. Some are baffled to find out that bunnies are exotic pets too.

According to Dr. Kevin Wright, a vet specialized on exotic pets, “an exotic pet is any species that is not one of the nine major domesticated species that comprise the majority of the curricula of veterinary schools”. That means any animal that’s not a dog, a cat, a horse, a cow, a sheep, a goat, a swine, a chicken or a turkey, can be exotic.

Conversations With Our Four-Legged Friend

Conversations With Our Four-Legged Friend | Animal Husbandry | Scoop.it

Mr. Scoop is lying peacefully over his owner’s bed, as always. The woman then puts on a coat, grabs a purse and announces, “Bye-bye, baby boy. Mommy’s got classes. I’ll be back soon”. Before leaving, she requests “Give mommy a kiss”; and the dog, naturally, complies.

Children of abuse are one group who usually don't know how to protect themselves and face the aftermath of being the victim. Therapy dogs are fast becoming a help in comforting these children and helping them cope with their abusive past.
Karina Castillo's curator insight, February 21, 2014 10:11 AM

These dogs have been known to comfort kids that have been abused.  Kids are typically attracted to dogs and what a better way to help combat their situation than playing with these adorable dogs?

Daniel Golding's curator insight, June 12, 2014 1:38 AM

I thought this was a very sweet video showing something to help child abuse. Often we dont hear about child abuse until after it happens and it is very hard to stop it before it happens, but this is a solution for those children who have suffered from it. Often the abused feels "unloved" and "lonely", and this is where the power of a pet comes in. A dog will give that kid attention and love no matter what he does, something a parent should do as well (but unfortunately dont always).

Dogs are truly mans best friend! And I mean come on look at him, he is so cute!

Dogs May Elicit More Empathy Than Some People

Dogs May Elicit More Empathy Than Some People | Animal Husbandry | Scoop.it

People may feel more empathy for dogs than for some of their fellow humans, a new study finds.

When it comes to victims of violence, people may be less disturbed by the suffering of human adults, who are considered capable of taking care of themselves, the study suggests. Meanwhile, children, puppies and full-grown dogs are perceived as dependent and vulnerable.

The study involved 240 men and women. Most of the participants were white college students between 18 and 25 years old.
