Employers have an obligation to take reasonable measures to  ensure a secure workplace environment. Employees can remain informed about preventative conduct to mitigate personal safety risks. Sufficient physical barriers to seperate employees from the general public increases workplace security. Effective Occupational Health and Safety requires co-operation between Employers and employees.

Life saver

This is my friend Luke sitting in the truck  and telling some swimmers to move away from a flash rip. "There has been a number of occasions where I have had to rescue some swimmers in distress". "You have to direct the swimmers away from the rip and often they can't hear you over the waves even with the loud speakers". "Some of the tourists don't understand English this can make things difficult".

*Personal safety risks involve dealing with the public with-in  the beach and surf environment. Theft on the beach is a matter dealt by the  police; however,  the police are not always immediately available.

 

* Environmental hazard is aquatic the risk is drowning  to  swimmers and their rescuers; alternatively,  training and equipment mitigates drowning risk. 

 

*Environmental hazard sun and heat the risk is sunburn and heatstroke. Appropriate clothing and equipment mitigates sunburn risks and hydration mitigates heatstroke risks.

This is the restaurant and cafe the most regular place that I attend due to their fantastic coffee's and biscuits. This is John an owner of the business of which I have a number of discussions with over the last 3 years.  "The centre of Surfers Paradise has lost appeal, significant vegetation and appears  as a construction site". "The sidewalks have remained uneven for 6 months and are dangerous." "We try to provide a safe and comfortable environment; however, many matters are outside our direct control".

*Auditory hazards: Constant exposure to excessive noise is a risk to hearing.

 

* Psychological: long term economical concerns may lead to stress and  mental illness.

 

*Physical hazards: constantly standing and high repetition have manual handling and musculoskeletal risks.

 

 A consideration is that the co-operation between separate work environments is required to mitigate risks.

This is my cousin Paul he has quiet a lot of experience of in this kind of work. "You have to pay attention and some of the driving public can be agitated". "Co-ordinating construction site  access around public traffic can be a challenge". "Speeding drivers are a risk; however, most people at least slow down".

*Sun and heat environmental hazards in the risk is sunburn and dehydration; however, appropriate clothing, sufficient work breaks and sufficient mitigate sunburn and heatstroke risks.

 

*Musculoskeletal risks: standing for long periods.

 

*A Physical hazard is the proximity of vehicles; however,  the ways of mitigating the risk includes high visibility clothing, equipment and training requirements.

This is Stacey one of the waitresses at the café  serving my double shot latte and Peter's cappuccino. I asked Stacey about what she thought about occupational health and safety in her workplace. Stacey raised concerns of noise from the nearby light rail construction activities and also work availability.  "I enjoy my work to a certain point but I would like something more challenging".

*Psychological risks: Socio-economic status may be limiting opportunities resulting in  mental illness. Furthermore, concerns about the availability of work would be a constant stressor.

 

* Physical risks: from constantly standing throughout the day and injury from repetitive tasks.

 

*Thermal hazards: exposure to hot foods and liquids.

 

*Noise risks:  hearing damage depending on the level and duration of noise exposure.

This newsagency is  in the circle on caville complex in Surfers Paradise where I have purchased my weekly lotto tickets for the last 3 years on the way to a morning coffee at the Chevron Renaissance. I do not know the ladies name even though  we often have a good chat. When I asked to take her photo in her work environment I explained the quest 2 assigment; consequently, leading to a discussion about the OH&S at her workplace.

The feedback was " I wake up early everyday, my job involves lifting stock, stacking product and standing most of the day for long hours". " I have some concerns about the light rail construction impacting on business". " I think the occupational health and safety  requirments in relation to the light rail construction are excessive and they always seem to have lots of breaks"

*Long working hours can have psychological and physical risks to short, medium and long term health.

 

*Physical hazards involve manual handling risks from lifting and stocking shelves. Musculoskeletal risks from long periods of standing.

* Personal safety risks related to general public interaction.

 

Separate working environments  can inadvertantly interact depending on their activities and proximity.
