Basis goes Android-first for App launch

Basis goes Android-first for App launch | Quantified-Self & Gamification | Scoop.it

Basis Science, makers of the Basis Band, finally launched their first mobile app, and, notably, it’s an Android app. The app currently works on five phones, all from Samsung, but the company promises more to come.

The $199 Basis Band launched last November with Bluetooth connectivity built into all devices, but no mobile app at all. That was something of a surprising move for an activity tracker, but the device had already been in development for nearly two years. Basis’ Healthy Habits behavior change software platform has hitherto been available only as a web portal. The company announced the Android app at CES in January, slating it for the first quarter of 2013.

Olivier Janin's comment, June 12, 5:34 AM
Today, Basis App is compliant with : • Samsung Galaxy SIV
• Samsung Galaxy SIII
• Samsung Galaxy SII
• Samsung Note II

If You Bought An 'iWatch' From Apple, You'd Check it ~95 Times Per Day | Quantified-Self & Gamification | Scoop.it

There have been multiple reports that Apple has a team of people working on making a computer for your wrist – a "smartwatch."

Some are already calling it the iWatch.

Perhaps you remain unconvinced about the merits of such an idea.

If that's the case, there's a chart you really need to see.

It's from Kleiner Perkins partner and former Internet analyst Mary Meeker's latest presentation on the state of the technology industry.

It shows what, exactly, the average smartphone user is looking for when he or she checks their phone ~150 times per day.

It looks like this:

Zombies, Run! - Live-Action Fanfilm

A live action fanfilm by the guys at Mars Rising Films for the iPhone and Android jogging app, Zombies, Run! In the harsh zombie apocalypse world, you are ru...
Olivier Janin's insight:

I began to use the app. I am not on hardcore mode yet (so much zombies chasing you  ! you should have a very fast run pacing !). I didn't end with a game over yet, I will try more to know if there is one.

The breakthrough is both the audio fiction in real time. And a smartphone asynchronous game : after your run, you can spend there the items you collected during your workout. The Gameplay is a  "Cityville-like". Develop and upgrade your base to survive against hordes of Zombies.

A great innovative app. The motivational trick is based on fear, which is working well, especially on audio.

With Smartglasses and enhanced vision, I imagine lots of others incentive for funny workouts, like eg running after a bunch of swedish blonds, staging your ghost ...

And for more basic feature, you have a classical web personnal Dashboard. Well done !

Ernesto Ramirez just announced the 2013 Quantified Self Global Conference in San Francisco on October 10th and 11th at the Presidio Officer's Club.

For those of you who've never been to a QS conference, you should definitely make it a point to attend. A QS conference is a wonderful event where toolmakers, tool users, academics, and scientists come together to share and learn. It's like a meetup, except much bigger and two days long! There will be amazing show&tell talks, product demos, and insightful discussions.

Six Numbers Reveal the Booming Business of Auto-Analytics

Six Numbers Reveal the Booming Business of Auto-Analytics | Quantified-Self & Gamification | Scoop.it

Many of us still run this way, of course, but for how much longer? Now we can lace up a pair of "smart" sneakers and instantly shift from running by feel to running by metrics. Guesses at how far and how fast are replaced by real time stats on pace and meters travelled.

If you think you'll never make the switch, think again. As Nike learned from studying millions of users, the magic number of times a runner needs to see her data before becoming a more "science-based" runner is just five. Once a person crosses that threshold they are "massively more likely" to keep running by metrics than by feel alone.

That's a great number. Here are five more I've come across in

my ongoing study of the field of auto-analytics.

new Xbox One Kinect Heart Rate Detection

Olivier Janin's insight:

via geekwire.com

"Microsoft has significantly upgraded the sensing capabilities of the second-generation Kinect sensor that will ship with the newly announced Xbox One game console. One example: The Kinect can detect a user’s heart rate optically.

The idea is to incorporate this functionality into exercise programs, as a start, but there are no doubt other applications, as well, and it’s also a sign of just how far the Kinect has come. The feature uses RGB and IR feeds to work."

****

Definitely not sure the HR detection is enough accurate to create and deliver Health Wellness related experiences which makes sense in term of Biofeedback.

The facial recognition feature can be engaging either : it compares the user face with pre-recorded emotional patterns. I am excited to test these features with the appropriate SDK to see how it could help to set emotional driven experience.

Wearable Computing Devices will exceed 485 Million Annual Shipments by 2018 | Quantified-Self & Gamification | Scoop.it

Wearable computing devices are projected to explode in popularity over the next year and with a wave of new gadgets set to hit the consumer market, could soon become the norm for most people within five years. ABI Research forecasts the wearable computing device market will grow to 485 million annual device shipments by 2018.

Currently, sports and activity trackers account for the largest chunk of wearable technologies shipped today. Smart activity trackers are widely available, and the device’s trendy and stylish appearance makes them very popular with a broad range of customers. It is estimated 61% of the wearable technologies market is attributed to sport/activity trackers in 2013.

Olivier Janin's insight:

In addition, last year's ABI Research projections were that by 2017, 170M wearable wireless devices will be health and fitness related.
