FDA issues final guidance on mobile medical apps

FDA issues final guidance on mobile medical apps | Quantified Pet | Scoop.it

Here is the result of the FDA regulation evolution on mobile medical Apps.

The FDA is focusing its oversight on mobile medical apps that:

-are intended to be used as an accessory to a regulated medical device – for example, an application that allows a health care professional to make a specific diagnosis by viewing a medical image from a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) on a smartphone or a mobile tablet;

-or transform a mobile platform into a regulated medical device – for example, an application that turns a smartphone into an electrocardiography (ECG) machine to detect abnormal heart rhythms or determine if a patient is experiencing a heart attack.

Mobile medical apps that undergo FDA review will be assessed using the same regulatory standards and risk-based approach that the agency applies to other medical devices.

The agency does not regulate the sale or general consumer use of smartphones or tablets nor does it regulate mobile app distributors such as the ‘iTunes App store” or the “Google Play store.”

Episode Rewind: Examining Pet Wearables That Monitor Health at NAVC 2017 Conference | Pet Lover Geek

Episode Rewind: Examining Pet Wearables That Monitor Health at NAVC 2017 Conference | Pet Lover Geek | Quantified Pet | Scoop.it
In early February, I attended the North America Veterinarian Conference (NAVC), an event that happens once a year in February in Orlando, Florida. Veterinarians, vet techs, practice managers and companies that provide the tools, medicines and research that fuel veterinary medicine, gather together for an incredible week of discovery, sharing new inventions with a mutual goal of progressing animal health. It’s my 4th time attending the conference, and I have to tell you, it was bigger and more impressive than ever. Almost 20 thousand people attend the conference and more than half of those people are veterinarians. The exhibit hall, where I spent all three days I was there, is over 410 THOUSAND square feet — and according to my Bellabeat Leaf (that the wearable tech I wear — a much prettier version of a fitbit), I averaged 12K steps a day, and a total of 17 miles walked in 72 hours. Needless to say, my dogs were barking.

Magpie is a tiny GPS tracker for kids, dogs, or luggage that will work anywhere in the world

Magpie is a tiny GPS tracker for kids, dogs, or luggage that will work anywhere in the world | Quantified Pet | Scoop.it
Magpie is a new device with a simple goal: to help you find the things you lost.
The GPS tracker is only about an inch in diameter and syncs with an Android or iOS app. It's waterproof, and it can be attached to everyday items — like keys, wallets, or laptops — or to a pet's collar or child's backpack.

There are a lot of GPS trackers on the market, many of which are about the same size and have some of the same capabilities as Magpie. But what sets Magpie apart is its built-in SIM card. This means it has an unlimited range and can work anywhere there's a cellular network — 185 countries to be exact.

Wearables Reveal the Secret Lives of Farm Animals

Wearables Reveal the Secret Lives of Farm Animals | Quantified Pet | Scoop.it
THE INTERNET OF Animals has arrived. No, not like cat-stalking zucchini gifs and skateboarding bulldog snaps (those are so 2015). Across the country, farmers are building actual connected networks of cows, pigs, and chickens. Using everything from microphones, accelerometers, and GPS trackers to temperature, glucose, and skin conductivity sensors, farmers can now track and monitor their flocks and herds with the flick of a finger.

Over decades of agricultural industrialization, technology has enabled farmers to raise thousands of animals together, increasing scale and profitability. Even as global demand for animal products increases (by as much as 40 percent in the next 15 years!) the number of farmers raising animals continues to fall. And with 9 billion mouths to feed by 2050, industrial ag is here to stay—along with the cameras, microphones, and body sensors that will serve as a farmer’s eyes and ears.

Livestock wearables come in a few shapes and sizes, from ankle bracelets to belly belts to ear tags. But they’re all trying to solve the same problem: How to keep animals healthy in high-volume livestock operations. Overcrowding and unsanitary conditions increase the chances that animals get sick or injured. Today’s tech can help farmers intervene earlier, provide more targeted care, and even encourage healthier behavior from the outset
