Essay on how MOOCs raise questions about the definition of student | Inside Higher Ed

Classroom walls may disappear as predicted, lectures may go the way of the dodo bird, but what will still define education is the presence of (a) a teacher, (b) students, and (c) a set of agreed-upon goals that they work toward together.

How MOOCs Benefit Higher Education

How MOOCs Benefit Higher Education | Quality and standards in higher education | Scoop.it

MOOCs are definitely a good thing–both for online users and higher education. It'll definitely be interesting to see what top universities do over the next few years to increase access to MOOCs and improve their overall quality. The future of MOOCs is uncertain, but it seems pretty bright. It just makes sense for universities to get on board.

Promoting quality culture in higher education institutions (PQC)

Promoting quality culture in higher education institutions (PQC) | Quality and standards in higher education | Scoop.it

In the autumn of 2012, EUA is launching a new project entitled ‘Promoting quality culture in higher education institutions’ (PQC), in partnership with the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA), the University of Duisburg-Essen, the University of Lisbon and the University of Zagreb.

Background and concept

The PQC project will follow up and build on the recently completed EUA-led project 'Examining quality culture in higher education institutions' (EQC, 2009-2012). Research conducted within the framework of that project showed that while the majority of HEIs in Europe have built up quality assurance (QA) systems, those in charge of managing quality at universities feel the need for further capacity building in how to incentivise all stakeholders (students, academic and administrative staff) to take on the responsibility for quality, i.e. how to put Part 1 of the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG) into practice and build quality cultures.

QAA responds to risk-based quality assurance report...

Anthony McClaran, Chief Executive of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), said: 'QAA welcomes the outcome of HEFCE's consultation on a more risk-based approach to higher education quality assurance in England.

'The proposals provide a sensible balance between better regulation for universities and colleges, and the need to safeguard quality and standards that enhance students' experience of higher education.

'QAA looks forward to consulting with students and the higher education sector this winter, and to begin reviews under the new system in January 2014.'

Next steps in risk-based quality assurance - HEFCE

Next steps in risk-based quality assurance - HEFCE | Quality and standards in higher education | Scoop.it

HEFCE has published the outcomes of its consultation on the future direction of quality assurance in higher education (notes 1 and 2).

The outcomes have been agreed by the HEFCE Board and will come into operation from the academic year 2013-14. They form a strong and positive package which puts students at its heart, and achieves better regulation by focusing effort where it is most needed.

The revised approach, which builds on existing good practice, will protect and enhance the student experience through robust and rigorous reviews of the quality assurance of teaching and learning in universities and colleges, and the standards of their awards. Students will continue to play a key role, as central partners in the quality assurance and enhancement of their higher education experience.
