Exhibition is first to offer a view of the various ideals of women in Indian painting | Art Daily | Kiosque du monde : Asie | Scoop.it

Indian miniatures are like windows onto dreamlike, idealised worlds. The pictures have a broad spectrum of themes ranging from religious and mythological subjects through literary, poetic motifs to secular, courtly scenes. The exhibition at Museum Rietberg is the first to offer a view of the various ideals of women in Indian painting.
Images of women play a key role in many genres of Indian painting. In keeping with the perfectly crafted forms of expression in Indian miniatures, the female figures in the works on display have the character of ideal, aesthetically flawless visions. Reflecting artistic standards, they go beyond the representation of real persons and should not be regarded as portraits of existing women like those who lived at court...

The making of our Bangabandhu | The Daily Star

The making of our Bangabandhu | The Daily Star | Kiosque du monde : Asie | Scoop.it

August 14, 1947. The people of this subcontinent achieved independence from the British Raj. But this independence came at a heavy price. The communal conflict escalated to such a scale that the entire continent had to be divided into two countries based on district-wise Hindu-Muslim majorities which led to the displacement of 10-12 million people. Millions of people lost their lives during the riots. Bengalis were among the worst victims who not only became refugees, but were also decimated by the Great Famine of 1943 caused by mass transportation of food by the British Raj to feed its army. Starvation, murder and vandalism loomed over Bengal, and its people became the victim of one of the worst atrocities the world had ever seen...

Two stones found at a construction site in Quang Ngai City last week are vestiges of a complex of Cham Towers that used to stand in the area more than a millennia ago, officials believe.
Nguyen Dang Vu, Director of the provincial Culture, Sports and Tourism Department, told Viet Nam News that the two stones – 80cm and 1.3m long – are thought to be from the Chanh Le Tower, built in the 10th or 11th century.
He said the two stones were unearthed when workers were digging at a construction site on Le Huu Trac Street.
“These stones are left from the ruined Cham tower in the province. The tower had been excavated in 1904 by French archeologist Henri Parmentier,” Vu said.
“The tower, believed to have been built in the 10th or 11th century...
