121writing.com - fast, high quality feedback for writing

Whether your students are in Korea or across town, for the first time it is possible to coach students with their writing as though you were face to face. And unlike Skype, your students get a permanent copy of your feedback to reference in the future.

This is a tool which syncs with your Google Drive account and allows you to record audio feedback on students' writing work. It's very much like the work done by Russel Stannard who uses screen capture to give feedback.

Ajaan Rob Hatfield's curator insight, June 4, 9:17 PM

I looked at this program. If you add this to Google hangouts it becomes a very powerful teaching tool.

Switching roles : an investigation into the use of reverse-mentoring by students to encourage teachers' uptake of ICT in their pedagogical approach

The benefits of reverse-mentoring have not been widely explored in the literature and this study provided evidence that the programme delivered both timely and relevant professional development for the participant teachers. Also the concept of students helping their teachers to develop skills with ICT fitted well with constructivist learning theory and this helped overcome many of the barriers associated with adult learning.

Yes, resistance to change seems to be strongest in the people who are paid to prepare us for the future.  Also the best way to learn something is to teach it.

Interesting alternative to iBooks and others.  The free version gets you 50MB of storage (not a lot, actually).  You CAN pay for the premium, but that's $40.00 per year.

academiPad's curator insight, April 9, 12:07 PM

I have written about the new wave of DIY textbooks before (Inkling and Habitat: http://www.joachim-scholz.com/academipad/2012/02/15/the-transformation-of-the-textbook-industry-continues-with-habitat/), and this app / platform is another step into creating course-customized textbooks.

What is great about ActiveTextbook is that it works across different platforms. Students are also able to highlight and annotate in the book, which can be shared in order to facilitate social learning.

10 Steps to a Successful School iPad Program

10 Steps to a Successful School iPad Program | #AusELT Links | Scoop.it

iPads have certainly become a highly desired commodity in education. Apple is reporting that schools are purchasing iPads by a ratio of 2:1 over MacBooks. However, that rush to purchase the latest technologies often precedes the careful planning and preparation that’s crucial to their success as educational tools.

Stated simply, technology alone doesn’t have the capacity to improve education. It needs to be woven into a holistic approach to education that encompasses thorough planning and ongoing review of the skills and competencies required by the rapidly changing society that characterizes life in the 21st century.

Developing Your Digital Study Skills

Developing Your Digital Study Skills | #AusELT Links | Scoop.it

Making the move from our safe and trusted traditional literacy habits to newer digital skills can be quite a challenge, but as teachers I think we are really unlikely to be able to use technology and help our students use technology really effectively unless we are prepared to face this challenge. Technology needs to be more than part of the way we teach but it also has to be part of the way we ourselves continue to learn and part of our everyday professional practice.

Blended learning in English Language Teaching: Course Design and Implementation

Blended learning is an area of ELT that continues to be of interest to practitioners in the field. Despite this, little can be found in the literature on blended learning course design or detailed descriptions provided of blends used in ELT contexts. This publication, which contains twenty case studies from around the world, addresses this deficit by illustrating blends being employed on EAP, ESP, Teacher Development and general EFL courses.

Over the last few years, interest in web-based tools has expanded rapidly, but how do we know which ones to use and which to avoid? In this workshop, we will look together at some web and mobile applications and establish criteria by which we can evaluate them to ensure we use tools that will lead to enhanced language learning.
