QA is not a verb

QA is not a verb | QA Testing | Scoop.it
Jessica Nickel's insight:

So TRUE!!!! There are so many things that QA Engineers do during each day to make sure that product or software releases go smoothly, and our daily tasks and trials are often overlooked. I especially like that this article advocates for the early involvement of QA in the development of product at the earliest stages.

Column info : Agile Testing through Gaming: An Interview with Nate Oster | QA Testing | Scoop.it
Nate Oster is giving two sessions at the upcoming STARCANADA 2013 that deal with empowering developers and testers through acceptance test-driven development. Oster
Jessica Nickel's insight:

This is an excellent article that provides an entirely different lens to testing, particularly acceptance test-driven development. Nate's interview highlights the benefits of taking a unique approach to testing and the benefits of the truly agile, concurrent testing process. An excellent read. I hope that his presentation from STARCANADA is posted!

Testing and the Black Swan

Testing and the Black Swan | QA Testing | Scoop.it
I noted in a post a few days ago that complex systems are subject to what are known as Black Swan events. We think of Black Swan events as very rare, requiring a complex set of circumstances to occ...
Jessica Nickel's insight:

This is an interesting little bit to me - not having any sort of formal "training" in testing, I do find myself operating a little more on the edge of things than other testers tend to (at least, according to what I read!). I think there are multiple lenses from which to think about testing software (or anything else, you know, say students, for example). How the tests are conducted depends upon the subject or object of testing and the purpose that the testing is supposed to achieve. In a software world that is becoming increasingly agile with weekly and even daily releases commonplace, testers cannot do everything, but they can choose what they will do with the time that they have. These choices can have a significant impact on the product.

The Three Signs of a Miserable Scrum implementation

The Three Signs of a Miserable Scrum implementation | QA Testing | Scoop.it
Probably the ugliest thing about going to conferences is that you pick up a lot of books to read. That even held for XP 2012 in Malmö, Sweden, although I just attended the first day at the tutorial of J.B.
Jessica Nickel's insight:

The author of this piece brings to light three important factors of SCRUM implementation that, when going poorly, severly impact the effectiveness of the team and overall product. I am fortunate to work in a company where the SCRUM implementation is going well - we work on relevant problems, communicate daily, and know the needs of our team members very well. Perhaps this is due to the size of our team and the leadership of our SCRUM master and CTO. Either way, I am impressed with how SCRUM is implemented. However, the downsides of a poor implementation are easy to see. So, I ask the same question as the author of the piece: how is your SCRUM implementation going?

PiBorg - Control Robots from you Raspberry Pi
Jessica Nickel's insight:

For those of you who have not checked out the Raspberry Pi, or any of the other new, smaller devices designed for those of us who love to learn and tinker, take a look at PiBorg. The site gives good descriptions of their product, a robotics add-on board for the Raspbery Pi, as well as easy instructions for various coding languages so you can get started. Many QA people I know also love to experiment with coding and small projects like this. This is pretty neat, so check it out!!!
