Audencia_MBA2014_G4's insight:

While working on Transformation of organization, we have red many articles about SouthWest & Air Tran merger. Our team started to gather information about the topic, through internet news articles, journals, company site. The team worked as analyst to choose the correct information, analyze and share our opinion, view and understandings. We learned about the operational changes, reactions of staff difficulties of merging. We discovered how difficult it is to integrate new work culture of both organizations. The employees of Air Tran were initially happy to be part of bigger organization. On the other hand employees of South West Airlines were initially worried about layoffs and delay in growth opportunity within the organization.

Outcome

It was a great learning opportunity for all of us, as none of our team member has hands-on experience of mergers. While working on project we got to know the in-depth knowledge and understanding the mechanism of transformations in big companies. It takes longer time to systemize the operations of merger. Strong culture does not always mean to be smoothens the integration.

Most interesting part was email interview conducted by our team with Mr. Henry Harteveldt who is a reputed travel industry analyst.  He is one of the top 33 most influential people in the travel industry and a regular follower of trends and events. The abstract of the interview has given us clear idea of the organizational issue change in operations.

Analysis Using Digital Media Research

The positive part of Scoop.it is that it is quick to gather relevant information available on the Internet. It helps to create own magazine of related topics. It is a user-friendly application for editing and writing our own views and details of the topic.

We have approached many followers and journalist but only one replied positively. Not many options for using different fonts. No notification if some of the scooped report is taken off from the main page of website. Sometimes irrelevant suggestions are pushed while working.

Using Digital Media for Pedagogical Learning

It is a great approach and good help in learning as we are exposed to various interesting topics and issues while doing research. While the culture part was relatively easy to apprehend, the political issues were more difficult to investigate. It is a faster method and innovative idea. It may provide chance to interact with experts of the topic as we did with success.

Southwest promises to finish combining the two carriers and ground the AirTran brand sometime in 2014.

Audencia_MBA2014_G4's insight:

Even after 2.5 yrs since Southwest & Air Tran merged, the operations are not yet combined. The major change to be done is reservation which they hope to complete by 2014. The smaller carriers of Air Tran disappeared a few planes were taken out repainted and refurbished. The pilots and flight attendant got into training, another group of employees grounded to begin the same transformation.
