Webinar explores tips, advice as most states adopt the common standards
As states move toward implementing the Common Core State Standards, school principals must ensure they are fully equipped to help classroom teachers incorporate the standards as effectively as possible.
Not our old standards - “Average isn’t good enough,” said Mel Riddile, associate director for high school services with the National Association of Secondary School Principals and a former high school administrator.
Opportunity brings challenges - “Those of us who have really worked to increase the number of college- and career-ready students, see this as the best opportunity we’ve had in a long time, and with that opportunity comes challenges.”
Major Shift - The Common Core effort is causing a “major shift” in the education conversation, Riddile said, because it will force educators and administrators to measure something different and new.
Second-Order Change - “This is about a second order change—we have to learn new skills, new habits, and new behaviors. We have to unlearn what bad habits we have,” he said.
Standards, Classroom, School - School leaders must know what their school’s teachers know about the standards, and they must be knowledgeable about what needs to be done in the classroom as well as what must be done on a building level.
Culture Change - “This is a big culture change for schools,” Riddile said. School principals will need vision, focus, and a positive mindset as the process continues.
Implementation is the key - “The fidelity of implementation of these standards is going to be the ‘make it or break it’ issue,” Riddile said.
Leaders Grow Leaders - “We’ll have to collaborate [and] share leadership throughout the school; leaders are going to have to grow more leaders … and build the collective capacity of our staff.”
A new survey finds that most internet users would like to be anonymous online, but many think it is not possible to be completely anonymous online. Some of the key findings:
86% of internet users have taken steps online to remove or mask their digital footprints—ranging from clearing cookies to encrypting their email.55% of internet users have taken steps to avoid observation by specific people, organizations, or the government.
The representative survey of 792 internet users also finds that notable numbers of internet users say they have experienced problems because others stole their personal information or otherwise took advantage of their visibility online.

Librarians, you cannot afford to have an adversarial relationship with their principals. You cannot even afford principals who are "agents of benevolent neglect." You need an administrator who actively supports you and your program.
"Jonah Peretti, a co-founder of Huffington Post and CEO of Buzzfeed, said at PandoMonthly tonight in New York that he doesn’t care about SEO anymore. He views it as a broken system that optimizes for robots, not humans." Erin Griffith reports on Pandodaily.
“Media and content are human businesses, and it’s a problem for humans to give so much power to Google, which is a robot” he said.
Without saying Google is Skynet and evil, more and more people now see the flaws compared to what information networks like Twitter can produce (not saying the latter is perfect either). His conclusion is that you shouldn't care about SEO anymore but I think there's an even more compelling reason to move to Curation. Google is increasingly taking social signals into account so that Social is becoming the new SEO no matter which angle you take it from:
- whether because your audience will find you first on social networks
- whether because your content will be well positioned in Search results because human curators will pick it up (and therefore Google too).
The debate whether SEO still matters or not is not important. What's relevant is that great content that please human genuine interests will surface more than it used to thanks to the work of human curators.
