Bill Gates offers vision of higher education

Bill Gates offers vision of higher education | Putting the PD in PD - Professional Development for Program Developers | Scoop.it

In a clear critique of the Obama administration’s proposed college rating system, he warned against simplistic efforts to judge colleges' quality: he discouraged a singleminded focus on college "completion.” He described as "oversimplistic" the view that higher education is "just about getting a job with a certain salary” — “Citizenship, developing deeper understanding, other things, are all important," he said.

Via Alberto Acereda, Ph.D.

Sarah Villarreal's insight:

Persistence intrigues me! From a professional perspective, knowing what factors influence graduation/retention is clearly beneficial (a fact that has not gone unnoticed by profit-based education software and services companies). From a personal perspective, I'm also intrigued. How do first-generation college students like my husband persist depsite the tremendous road blocks? CSUSM has a significant first-generation student population (over 40% for last 10 years); more research on this topic is clearly warranted.
