This is a good article by Lydia Moussa that gives a clearer explanation of the difference between leaders and managers.  Specifically she boils it down to the amount of confidence found in each.  Her example of EIC is well thought out and concrete enough to remember.

 

While both leaders and managers must act like the other from time to time based on their current situation, it is only leaders who will be successful because of their ability to empower others.  We only leave an impact the size of those we affect.  True leadership ripples through multiple levels of people rather than one small group that is controlled.
