This was once GOP orthodoxy: that long and often mandatory prison time was the path to reducing crime and protecting communities.

“If we have the money to lock people up for decades, we have the money to try to reintegrate them back into society.
Robert L Kearse's insight:

Work and Stable Housing are an integral key to any Reintegration Program. Starting in November 2015, there will be an influx of 46,000 inmates (mostly non-violent drug offenders) being released from Federal Penitentiaries across the nation. There is not the infrastructure in place to handle the growth in prisoners that will be released and Re-Entry programs will be ESSENTIAL to keeping these inmates from returning to prison.

“Housing First” Helps Keep Ex-Inmates Off the Streets (and Out of Prison) Next City Although education, employment, and treatment for drug and mental health issues all play a role in successful reintegration, these factors have little hope in the...
Robert L Kearse's insight:

This is a great program. In fact, according to a study done by the McCormick Institute of Public Affairs, nearly a quarter of guests in homeless shelters had been incarcerated within the previous year. Combined with the fact that Clinton Era laws exclude Convicted Felons from gaining access to public housing, some inmates are without the resource of stable housing and are left in precarious situations where they are more likely to reoffend.

Pre-release center for county jail inmates in works
Berkshire Eagle
PITTSFIELD -- Re-entry into the community for inmates at the Berkshire County Jail & House of Correction could soon become a much smoother process.
Robert L Kearse's insight:

Finally people are starting to realize that if we take the responsibility of locking up offenders, feeding them, housing them, clothing them, and providing for their health care....then it is also our responsibility to help these same individuals to reintegrate back into society by getting them in touch with the resources that will give them a chance to succeed and become a productive member of society. This is cool I like initiative's such as these Re-Entry program. Re-Entry is the new "buzz" word in corrections. Time for Louisiana to join the party.

Prison System is Failing America | Gingrich Productions

Prison System is Failing America | Gingrich Productions | Reintegration Bulletin | Scoop.it
A number of states, most recently Mississippi, have already begun to take important first steps by directing nonviolent offenders to community supervision and other forms of correction. These measures keep violent offenders off ...
Robert L Kearse's insight:

It's very interesting that of all people...NEWT GINGRICH thinks it's possible to bring down the Prison Industrial Complex he helped to create during the lates 70's to the early to mid 1990's when he was Speaker of the House....He helped usher in this trend of Mass Incarceration with draconian mandatory Minimum sentences. If we were to reduce today's prison population of 2.4 million by half in the next decade....there would also be alot of probation officers, prison guards, wardens, and state/federal workers out of a job. It's about MONEY....so there is an incentive to fight back against changing America's prison policies, stopping mandatory minimums, having sentencing reform and the legalization of certain drugs (i.e marijuana)....If the prisoners keep flowing...money keeps flowing into people's pocket. Just ask Dick Cheney & Corrections Corporation of America...a publicly traded company on Wall St.....Prions are failing American, esp young blacks, and it will take serious Re-entry programs to try and help stem the curve of the recidivism rate. These programs can help to link former inmates with the social services, educational and job opportunitieis needed to survive on the outside within society.

6 Reasons Why Prison Is Better In Europe Than America - Business Insider Australia

6 Reasons Why Prison Is Better In Europe Than America - Business Insider Australia | Reintegration Bulletin | Scoop.it
Business Insider Australia 6 Reasons Why Prison Is Better In Europe Than America Business Insider Australia “Unlike many other Western countries, the United States responded to escalating crime rates by enacting highly punitive policies and laws...
Robert L Kearse's insight:

I was wrong in my earlier post...instead of 2.4 million prisoners...we have 2.2 Million people incarcerated in America. But the War on Drugs has been the singular drive behind the United States rise from around 300,00 prisoners in 1972, to more than 2 million today. We could learn a lot from other countries who look at Rehabilitation for their incarcerated inmates. Our sole aim of incarceration should be to enable prisoners to lead a life of social responsibility free of crime upon release. Instead the United States would rather privatize Prisons...create a Prison Industrial Complex, and deny inmates the right to food, housing, and jobs when they are released from prison after they have "so-called" paid their debt to society through Incarceration. This is what I and other scholars would call the "Invisible Punishment"....prisoners are regulated to second class status when they are released. This term, first coined by Jeremy Travis, classifies how these inmates are systematicly denied employment, housing, education, and public benefits once released from incarceration. We need to step our game up so these individuals can become contributing members of society.
