Pulse oximeter is a device that is used to measure oxygen level in blood and heart beat rate accurately. The oxygen level in blood is usually displayed in percentage value and it is measured by infrared light that is passed through red blood cells.
The device usually gives accurate results except when the flow of blood is low or when the pulse is weak. In order to get accurate results the probe of the pulse oximeter has to be fixed in a place where the flow of blood is higher. For the device to work properly it has to detect various pulses so make sure to follow the manual before fixing the probe.
The most commonly used oximeters are bedside, hand held device, wrist and finger type oximeter. There are different types of models available in each type. These devices have to be chosen based upon ones need and requirement. We will have a look at the different types of oximeters that are widely used.
Hand held pulse oximeter is most commonly used in hospitals, emergency departments and at doctor’s office. Cost wise the device is cheaper than the bedside units and it has a versatile probe that connects to the computer, the other end of the device is connected either to the earlobe or finger of the patient. In rare cases the medical professionals clips the probe to the toe of the patient to ensure the flow of blood is maximum.
Next commonly used device is fingertip oximeter, it can be used in home as well as in medical institutions. The device gained its popularity because of its affordability and compact nature that makes it easy to carry it anywhere without much difficulty.
As the name suggests the probe is usually clipped to the fingertip of the patient and light is made to pass through the finger of the patient’s and thus the blood-oxygen level is measured accurately. In case if the blood flow is interrupted due to injury or wound the device cannot read accurate values, when you clip the device make sure it is fixed to a place where there is maximum flow of blood.
The next one is the fetal pulse oximeter, the device is specially designed to measure the rate of heart beat and percentage of oxygen level in blood. The fetal oximeter can accurately measure heart beat and oxygen level of the fetus. The probe is inserted to the birth canal of the women and place over the skull of the fetus and the sensor accurately measures hemoglobin level.
Pulseoximetersplus pediatric pulse oximeter provides accurate results and can be used to measure the oxygen level in kids accurately.
