Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States.  It is located in the northeastern Caribbean.  It is only 100 miles long and 35 miles wide.  It is the smallest island of the Greater Antilles.  It has a very dinamic economy ranging from agriculture to pharmecueticals to electronics.  Its capital is the city of San Juan.  Its climate is mild compared to most tropical ilsands but still hotter than North America.  It uses US Currency and is mostly hispanic.  The National Anthem is La Borniquena.  Its official Languages are Spanish and English.  Its government is a Democracy, Republic.  The Total area is 9,104 Square kilometers or 3,515 square miles.

Mnufacturing is one of the main industries in Puerto Rico.  Puerto Rico has started to manufactue more pharmacueticals, chemicals, and machinery.  Another main industry in Puerto Rico is tourinsm.  Puerto Rico is a big vacation and travel spot.  Puerto Rico is also known for it's agricultural industry.

Typical Food

For lovers of pork, there is no greater Puerto Rican treat than a trip into the hills for a sampling of lechon, or roast suckling pig.  Lechon is a Puerto Rican roast of pig.  Lechon is one of the most popular foods in Puerto Rico.  Lechon is a big thing for tourist.  People often come from far away to try lechon.  Lechon is also called roast suckling pig.

Puerto Rico has same government as the United States.  There is three branches.  The Executive branch is the Governor.  The Legislature is the sente and chamber of representitives.  The Judiciary which is the Supreme Courts.

currency and exchange rate

Since Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States it's currency is the US dollar.  The Us Dollar is made up of 100 cents and locally called a peso.  A one cent peice is called centavo or chavito.  A five cent piece is called villon or ficha. A tweny five cent piece is called the peseta.

The flag of Puerto Rico was first used on December 22, 1895.  The flag is only flown in company of the U.S. flag.  This is because Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States.  Puerto Rico was adopted by the U.S. in July 25, 1952.  The flag's stripes represent freedoms of the people and the blood that feeds the people.  The star is to represent the Commonwealth.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan is the oldest city on US territory.  The population of San Juan is 420,326.  San Juan was founded by Juan Ponce De Leon in 1521.  San Juan was originally named the City of Puerto Rico.  Puerto Rico was first discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 during his second voyage.

Weather During This Time of Year

In Puerto Rico the weather changes very little from season to season.  In the winter the average temperatures on the coast in about 69 degrees Farenheit.  In the mountains the winter temperature is about 55 degrees Farenheit.  The weather in Puerto Rico is very different from other tropic areas.  It does not get as hot in Puerto Rico. Sometimes the temperatures gets up into the upper 90s and even over 100 but not often.

Important People

The first Puerto Rican Professional athlete to perform in the United States was Roberto Clemente.  Clemente was a Professional baseball player.  He was tragically killed in a plane crash taking supplies to the coast of Puerto Rico after an earthquake.  He was elected to the Pro Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.

In 1902 The United States declares Puerto Rico a territory of The United States. In 1917 Puerto Ricans are granted U.S. citizenship. Puerto Rico becomes self-governing commonwealth of the U.S.

Typical Crop/Agriculture

Puerto Rico has a very dinamic economy.  Its main exports are chemicals, electronics, rum, beverage concentrates, and medical equipment.  The main crop is sugar cane.  Two other crops that are vital to the economy are tobacco and coffee.  Recently urban expanision has started to take over the sugar can land so coffee production is slowly rising over sugar cane.

Religion

The Consititution guarantees freedom for all faiths.  The major relgions are Catholic, Protestants, and others.  85% of people are Catholic.  8% of the people are Protestant. Only 3% of the people practice other religions.  Churches of many different denominations can be found on Puerto Rico.
