Kevyn Eva Norton's comment, September 29, 2012 2:54 AM
thanks Peter - do you know whether one can create read-along audio in ibook author?
Kevyn Eva Norton's comment, September 29, 2012 3:56 AM
found a good article on the subject here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3780674?tstart=0
Peter Pappas's comment, September 29, 2012 1:25 PM
Kevyn, Thanks for the article. I'm using a simpler technique in the iBook I'm working on. Students can listen to FDR deliver his "Day of Infamy" speech while reading his first draft of the speech (with his hand edits). There's a sound file (*.m4a) on the page - it keeps playing as long as the reader stays on the page. In this case I have the written speech in widget that enlarges to full screen. As the reader swipes through the widget the sound file continues.

Frank, just realized if this hack works, I can buy Pages instead of Compressor. Hope I can replicate!
Frank Lowney's comment, July 2, 2012 6:20 PM
If your eTextbook is composed of text, images and audio or video media only, you might find what Pages exports (ePub 3 standard) to be a better fit and provide you with a greater reach. The ePub 3 standard (as opposed to the previous 2.1) is quite new (ratified last October) so eReaders are playing catch-up. iBooks is way ahead of the pack.

OTOH, you'll have to forego the cool interactivity of *.ibooks.

My hope and expectation is that this situation is a temporary one due to over-cautious design on Apple's part. There is really no technical reason why the iBooks.app couldn't render the same MPEG-4 videos in an *.ibooks file that it successfully renders in an *.epub file.
Peter Pappas's comment, July 2, 2012 7:33 PM
Frank - thanks for your input.

I tried you're "use Pages to create an *.epub file with the Handbrake encoded movie in it ... just fine in iBooks!"

But i couldn't replicate your success...

I made a .pages doc with Handbrake encoded video (as a m4v) in it . Exported the Pages as .epub with the video in it.

IBA would not accept it. Is there some trick to the settings?

Two Things You Need to Know About Using Audio & Video in iBooks

Two Things You Need to Know About Using Audio & Video in iBooks | Publishing with iBooks Author | Scoop.it

Some good tips here

Frank Lowney's comment, August 24, 2012 7:13 PM
I have successfully created .m4v files acceptable to iBooks Author with multiple alternate audio tracks (English, French and Spanish), multiple Soft Subtitle tracks (English, French, Spanish and Hungarian) and a chapter track. In full screen mode (only), you will see a little widget in the media controller that enables one to select an alternate (to designated default English) audio track and one of the available soft subtitle tracks (default is none). To date, I have found no mechanism with which to make use of the chapter track. This is unfortunate because they can be very useful to learners who want/need to review specific segments of a video as in the case of a lecture/demonstration. I have logged a bug report on that point -- it would help if others did likewise.

The key to all of this is the application Subler 0.17 (http://code.google.com/p/subler/) which is most deserving of your donations.

Apparently, there is an atom in an m4v file that serves as a "brand" that iBooks Author looks at in deciding whether to accept or reject an .m4v video file. Subler sets this atom to IBA's liking. Handbrake and other ffmpeg-based apps fail to set this atom to IBA's liking.

One important thing is to NOT select Subler's preferences to select "Chapters [ ] Create Preview." IBA will reject your file if this Photo-JPEG track is present.

Frank, thanks once again for helping to figure out all these IBA secrets.
