Not Caring

One of the greatest skills you can acquire as an author is a thick skin.

Once you unleash a story onto the world, it no longer belongs to you. When it was in your head, and on your computer during the writing/rewriting process, it was a personal, private thing. But the moment your words go out into the world, they are subject to the opinion of strangers. What was once personal is now public.

Do yourself a huge favor, and don't listen to the public.

This goes for more than your literary endeavors. If you blog, or speak in public, or tweet on Twitter, you are a Public Figure.

That means some people aren't going to like you.

And you shouldn't care.

A Newbie's Guide to Publishing: The Race to the Bottom

A Newbie's Guide to Publishing: The Race to the Bottom | Publishing Digital Book Apps for Kids | Scoop.it

I've had a few people forward me the article written by Ewan Morrison for the Guardian, Are Books Dead, And Can Authors Survive?

I mostly agree with Morrison's prediction for the end of paper (something I've been predicting for a while now--print will become a niche market) and the end of publishers (which I've also been blogging about for years.)

But then Morrison takes a giant leap and says that authors will also go extinct. He ends it with ...

Internet & Books Share Same Critics 1 | Plus Ultra Technologies/30 steps

Internet & Books Share Same Critics 1 | Plus Ultra Technologies/30 steps | Publishing Digital Book Apps for Kids | Scoop.it

It appears that everywhere we turn, we are bombarded by the same old arguments. In short, the Internet and its users have been accused of “spreading inaccurate knowledge;" "ruining our ability to memorize;" “weakening local community ties;” encouraging “cultural anarchy and the vulgarization of taste;" causing an “[information] overload [which has] become more acute than they were a century ago, and it seems likely they will weigh even more heavily on future generations than they do on our own;" and the list goes on and on.

The people who believe these accusations seem to want us to ignore the Internet, and return to the good old days of the printed book. There is only one problem with this. The arguments listed above are not only directed at the Internet of today, but were also directed against the printing press and printed books. Indeed, the quotes mentioned at the beginning of this article, were taken directly from attackers of the printing press. How quickly we forget! Let's tackle each of these one by one, shall we ...

Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing: Which Way Will You Make More Money? | Nathan Bransford, Author

Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing: Which Way Will You Make More Money? | Nathan Bransford, Author | Publishing Digital Book Apps for Kids | Scoop.it
It's author monetization week! Monday through Thursday this week I'm going to have a series of posts on a crucial topic for the modern writer: How to make money.

Today we'll start with the books themselves. With the e-revolution (e-volution?) well underway, print sales are declining and there's a great disparity between the amount an author can make per-copy with a self-published e-book vs. a traditionally published e-book. Authors are taking a hard look at their balance sheets.

How is it that authors are making more per copy from $2.99 e-books than traditionally published are with $10.99 e-books? Does it mean everyone should self-publish?

The Writing Bomb: 5 Reasons Why Indie Authors Are Succeeding

Welcome to The Writing Bomb.

I've been consulting with two publishers recently and I've discovered five golden nuggets of information. One of these two publishers is a high end, high-quality vanity press; the other is an up and coming, recently restructured, shared-publishing press. They are digitally behind the times and still operating as if digital publishing is irrelevant to their authors.

They have a bitter sweet taste in their mouths because, I think, they have been taken off guard. It was only two or three years ago that vanity presses were booming and desperate authors were dishing out thousands to get their words in print.

I've talked directly with the editors of these publishing houses, listened to their questions and vision, and I've been introduced to their processes. In doing so, I've discovered something quite interesting: Indie authors know the state of publishing and without a shadow of doubt have a leg up on the latest ebook and publishing trends.

Does that surprise you?

Indie authors are gaining ground not only in popularity and credibility, but we are the force behind the changes in this exciting new industry. From what I've seen, some publishers are beginning to need us more than we need them. Here are five reasons why Indie authors are succeeding:

Can Digital Comic Books Spark a Love of Reading? | MindShift

Can Digital Comic Books Spark a Love of Reading? | MindShift | Publishing Digital Book Apps for Kids | Scoop.it

It has been a bitter pill for me to swallow as a parent and as a bibliophile: my son does not love to read. Sure, I read to him daily when he was a toddler, and even once he learned to read to himself, we still spent many evenings reading books aloud as a family. (Thank you, J.K. Rowling for that.) But he’s never been one to pick up a book on his own accord, even though bookshelves line almost every room of our house and even though I’ve got endless suggestions for books that I just know he’ll love.

My son did not love to read, that is, until he was assigned Art Spiegelman’s Maus: A Survivor’s Tale. For those unfamiliar with the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, it’s a graphic novel relating ...
