Apple Changes for Apps Aimed at Kids go Beyond COPPA | Digital Kids Author | Publishing ebooks and apps for kids | Scoop.it

If you create apps for kids,  please take 5 minutes to read this!

If you thought you’d made your app COPPA compliant after July 1, you might be surprised to find your app rejected by Apple if you submit an update!

This has happened to scores of developers of apps for kids.

Why are these updates being rejected? Because Apple released new review guidelines that take COPPA to a tighter level than what seemed required.

"The kindergarten student, a shy, Mandarin-speaking five-year-old immigrant in the tiny community of Sangudo, Alta., had barely spoken a word during the first three months of class. So her teacher was surprised one day last year when the girl struck up a conversation. The subject of their animated discussion? An image on the screen of an iPad."

This was a surpise! In the beginning of my college experience, I use to think that professors were intimitated by technology because the "older generation" does not understand how helpful it is to the "younger generation".

My daughter came home with a Maths assignment. It's theme - "Tax in Australia". The focus was determining tax structures for each income level of their 4 candidates- a school kid working part time, a mum working 30 hours a week, a self employed trades person and an executive working in his two companies. The problem was they were using a tax booklet with tax rates from 2008 and there was no explanation of how to actually pay the tax. No explanation of what GST is and what should and shouldn't be claimed and why. I understand that these are complex issues however shouldn't our kids have a basic understanding of this when they leave school? After all, they pay tax for the rest of their life. Money, finance, debt, tax and how to plan financially should be taught at school, not how to use an Ipad Iphone etc. Children educate themselves with these devices. Budgeting and the use of money however is something that should be taught...
