Traditional publishing is 'no longer fair or sustainable', says Society of Authors

Traditional publishing is 'no longer fair or sustainable', says Society of Authors | Publishing | Scoop.it
Chief executive of 9,000-member UK group argues that while 'authors' earnings are going down generally, those of publishers are increasing'
Carol Sill's insight:

And note: The Society of Authors includes self-published writers among its members if they have sold 300 copies of a single title in print form, or 500 copies in ebook form, within a 12-month period. According to Solomon, most writers would "still prefer a traditional publishing deal but the terms publishers are demanding are no longer fair or sustainable".

Peter Hudson: BitLit Helps You Get E-Book Versions Of The Physical Books You Already Own | TechCrunch | Publishing | Scoop.it

Naden Parkin's book sales and author website

Carol Sill's insight:

Naden Parkin did a lot of self-marketing for his book of poetry, "A Relationship with Truth" - sharing his voice from the Northern Alberta oil patch. As a result, he's sold many copies of his book, which he launched in a bar with the slogan: $20 for a book and a beer. Taking the book to the rigs, he also set up bookstore readings and signings, plus media interviews, his website and social media. And this is a book of poetry - not what you'd expect as a big seller in Canada....

He says:

"This is coming from Canada.
I’m a,
Midwestern peasant a man of the,
God blessed rednecks with oil patch blood,
Saskatchewan born, now working Albertan muds."

Is your book a self-published masterpiece?

Is your book a self-published masterpiece? | Publishing | Scoop.it
We've chosen our first self-published book of the month. Now we want more, and to champion the best. Please send us your finest work
Carol Sill's insight:

I'm glad to see the venerable Guardian taking a peek at self-published books. Once they open the doors, they will be flooded with entries for "Self-Published Book of the Month" and I'm curious to know what they will end up doing with all the many entries.

In past centuries, it all used to be called publishing, whether released by a friend, a group of authors or an author himself - and it usually was a him back then.

We know there are terrible books out there, many of them self-published, but many terrible books are also published by the companies that overlook unusual or extraordinary work in favour of potential sales.

We need more mainstream media interest in self-publishing, not only as interest in the business of self-publishing - but right down to the "little authors that could" - the engines that make self-publishing possible.

But by the looks of this first self-published book of the month, I wonder if they are angling for books that can be held up to ridicule, revealing the folly of unedited publications.

Carol Sill's insight:

Looks good - but how many more tips and tricks do self-publishing authors really need? Its inspiring, and can be helpful to pick up on these ideas and to stay in touch with the rapidly changing field. I think that reviews are what indie publishers need, along with real hefty marketing help - that's where a new entry into this area would be of real service!
