Metaphor map charts the images that structure our thinking

Metaphor map charts the images that structure our thinking | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Metaphor is not the sole preserve of Shakespearean scholarship or high literary endeavour but has governed how we think about and describe our daily lives for centuries, according to researchers at Glasgow University.

Experts have now created the world’s first online Metaphor Map, which contains more than 14,000 metaphorical connections sourced from 4m pieces of lexical data, some of which date back to 700AD.

While it is impossible to pinpoint the oldest use of metaphor in English, because some may have been adopted from earlier languages such as Germanic, the map reveals that the still popular link between sheep and timidity dates back to Old English. Likewise, we do not always recognise modern use of metaphor: for example, the word “comprehend” comes from Latin, where it meant to physically grasp an object.

The three-year-long project to map the use of metaphor across the entire history of the English language, undertaken by researchers at the School of Critical Studies, was based on data contained in the Historical Thesaurus of English, which spans 13 centuries....

We work with metaphors all the time, and for teachers of English literature, having a good grasp of metaphors is even more important. But then metaphors are symbols and like symbols, metaphors can cover a large number of ideas and concepts. No wonder therefore that using metaphors can help communicate complex ideas and concepts more effectivley than verbal descriptions or written descriptions that go on and on and yet are not able to communicate the intended information. I somehow connect metaphors with the heading in a mind map.

The story of my blogging screw up | Mark Schaefer

The story of my blogging screw up | Mark Schaefer | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

It finally happened. After more than six years and 2,000 blog entries I finally had the big screw up!

This post was originally titled “How to achieve pure search results.” I was doing some research for a client and needed to find a way to get out of the “filter bubble.”

When you do a search, your results may depend on what you have searched on before, your contact list and subject matter in GMail, your activities on Google+ and your physical location, to name a few factors.

So if I search for something and you search for something, we’re likely to come up with vastly different results based on the profiles Google has created for us.

But what if you want “pure” results? I looked around at different options and stated using a Google option called “Verbatim.” I lightly experimented with it but misunderstood the fundamental nature of this tool and posted an article about how it can help you find “pure search results.”

Quite a few readers tried it, liked it, and made the same incorrect assumptions as me. But reader Phil Bradley caught the error and corrected me....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

I went too fast and I delivered my first major blogging screw up today! Honesty is what makes Mark Schaefer's blog the best.

Seth Godin's Blog: "Plenty more" | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

One of the critical decisions of every career:"Well, there's plenty more to do, I'll do the least I can here and then move on to the next one."vs."I only get to do this one, once.

Never forget to take time to take a step back from your work and assess how you're doing. It gives you a chance to remove the short sighted blinkers and see the bigger picture. While it is easy to get drawn into routine and perhaps stopping short of delivering excellence on occasions, it is also possible that you have not been appreciating the fine work you have been producing and that should give the strength, confidence and encouragement to maintain that standard.

5 Keys To Writing a Book, From YouTuber Turned Author Mamrie Hart | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

To a writer, there's nothing scarier, yet full of pristine possibility, than a blank Word document. After YouTube's most prominent mixologist Mamrie Hart got a book deal last year, she suddenly found herself with hundreds of those blank slates lined up in a row, like so many cars to be jumped by Evel Kneivel's motorcycle. Somehow, she managed to clear them all—but not without some serious challenges along the way.

Jeff Domansky's insight:

You Deserve a Drink, a popular YouTube channel, is now also a book. First-time author Mamrie Hart explains what was so hard about writing it. An enjoyable writer's story and recommended reading. 9/10

Want to Be More Creative? Try These 8 Tools

Want to Be More Creative? Try These 8 Tools | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

I've always considered myself to be a fairly creative person. According to my mom, I practically burned through coloring books when I was little, which is why it made sense that I majored in art, then media, and wound up in marketing.

And while I consider myself lucky to be inherently creative, there are certainly some days where the ideas seem to flow much easier than others.

From a marketing standpoint, this often results in frustration. We need to be creative on a daily basis.

To avoid getting stuck in a creative rut, I've collected a series of apps and tools I call upon whenever I need a little help getting the wheels turning. Whether you're into doodling or inspiring quotes, this roundup is designed to provide you with the resources you need to get unstuck and start creating....

2-Person Agency You've Never Heard of Made Nike's Stirring Women's World Cup Ad

2-Person Agency You've Never Heard of Made Nike's Stirring Women's World Cup Ad | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

The U.S. women's soccer team has a roster of stand-out stars, but their individual strengths work best when they play as a team. That's the gist of a new, minute-long "American Woman" ad Nike launched as part of a bigger #NoMaybes campaign designed to elevate the team's profile during the FIFA Women's World Cup this week.

"We didn't want to go into this trying to make a women's spot—we wanted to make a soccer spot," said Michael McGrath, partner at Thousands Creative, the Portland, Ore., agency that created the ad.

Thousands Creative's own profile is getting a boost because of the work. The two-man shop was founded just a year ago by a pair of former Nike employees and currently has neither a website (just an empty Tumblr) nor publicly listed contact info....

Homer Simpson solved the mass of the Higgs boson in 1998 | Geek.com

Homer Simpson solved the mass of the Higgs boson in 1998 | Geek.com | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Perhaps you’ve noticed that Homer Simpson has been getting dumber as The Simpsons continues its run as the longest-running animated sitcom ever, but like a wise idiot once told us, stupid is as stupid does.

Dr. Simon Singh wrote a book in 2013 called The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets that included a spotlight on the 1998 episode “The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace.” In that episode, Homer becomes obsessed with Thomas Edison and decides to become an inventor. A scene in the script required a glasses-clad Homer to be placed in front of a chalkboard with complex mathematical equations. One of the writers on staff had a physicist friend who was researching the then-theoretical Higgs Boson particle and nabbed a scientifically accurate equation from him:

“That equation predicts the mass of the Higgs boson,” says Dr. Singh. “If you work it out, you get the mass of a Higgs boson that’s only a bit larger than the nano-mass of a Higgs boson actually is. It’s kind of amazing as Homer makes this prediction 14 years before it was discovered.”...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Gotta love Homer and his bumbling brilliance created by some talented writers.

In this series of posters, graphic designer Nick Barclay illustrates 14 famous films as circles of color. Dracula's poster features two red fang marks; Harry Potter's depicts the outlines of his famous broken spectacles; The Lord of the Rings is a giant gold ring to rule them all; Trainspotting is a series of pink track marks on pale flesh; and The Matrix is one red and one blue pill.

The posters are eye-catching pieces of abstract decoration, letting you pay homage to your favorite movies without making you cover your wall with giant photos of Keanu Reeves in a trench coat or Daniel Radcliffe holding a wand.
