Twitter’s Social Impact Can’t Be Measured, But It’s The Pulse Of The Planet | TechCrunch

Twitter’s Social Impact Can’t Be Measured, But It’s The Pulse Of The Planet | TechCrunch | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

When you sit back and think about how far Twitter has come since it launched in 2006, its rise to glory is impressive. It’s difficult to make your way through a day without seeing a tweet referenced on television, the radio, or on a news website. It doesn’t mean that Twitter is the biggest or most popular company or service in the world, but it does prove that its social impact has reached a level that not many technology companies have reached.

When you want to search for something online, you “Google It.”

When you want to connect with friends, or someone that you just met, you “friend them on Facebook.”

When you want to share your random thoughts with the world, you “tweet it.”...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Tweeting is Believing? Analyzing Perceptions of Credibility on Twitter | iRevolution

Tweeting is Believing? Analyzing Perceptions of Credibility on Twitter | iRevolution | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

What factors influence whether or not a tweet is perceived as credible? According to this recent study, users have “difficulty discerning truthfulness based on con-tent alone, with message topic, user name, and user image all impacting judg-ments of tweets and authors to varying degrees regardless of the actual truth-fulness of the item.”

For example, “Features associated with low credibility perceptions were the use of non-standard grammar and punctuation, not replacing the default account image, or using a cartoon or avatar as an account image. Following a large number of users was also associated with lower author credibility, especially when unbalanced in comparison to follower count [...].” As for features enhan-cing a tweet’s credibility, these included “author influence (as measured by follower, retweet, and  mention counts), topical expertise (as established through a Twitter homepage bio, history of on-topic tweeting, pages outside of Twitter, or having a location relevant to the topic of the tweet), and reputation (whether an author is someone a user follows, has heard of, or who has an official Twitter account verification seal). Content related features viewed as credibility-enhancing were containing a URL leading to a high-quality site, and the existence of other tweets conveying similar information.”...

Does Twitter Kill TV Comedy? Writers From “The Daily Show,” “SNL,” “Fallon” And Others Sound Off | Fast Company | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Ever since Will Rogers stood on a stage with an open newspaper, comedy has evolved and adapted to technological change.

..."In the end though," says Baze "I think what makes a good tweet is the same thing that makes a good joke, which is getting at a fundamental truth of some kind in a clever or interesting way."

Kutner adds that, unlike monologues, the ideal personal tweets are typically one-liners, and there’s less riding on them.

"In terms of content," says Kutner, "I feel way more liberty to get political, obscure, or purely attitudinal with a tweet. You kind of never know who will respond to what, so anything’s game. And more to the point, there’s no chance of a silent audience on Twitter if it goes flat, so you can take more risks.

In Twitter, An Emerging Creative Medium For The Digital Age | Fast Company | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
The notebook that Pulitzer-prize winning author Jennifer Egan used to compose her short story Black Box had eight small squares on each page.

After a year of editing, those boxes turned into more than 600 tweets.

In May, the New Yorker fiction department's Twitter account published the story during 10 one-hour nightly installments of tweets. Instead of using the platform to discuss a television program, a speech, or a news event occurring elsewhere, users tuned into something occurring on the platform itself. Twitter became not a second screen, but a first screen.

The story Egan wrote developed differently on Twitter than it would have if written with another medium in mind....

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo: Users Can Download Their Entire Archive By Year-End; Now Sees 1B Tweets Every 2.5 Days | TechCrunch | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Twitter CEO Dick Costolo has once again promised that Twitter users will, indeed, be able to download a full archive of their tweets in just a matter of weeks.

...The rest of the talk has other interesting factoids too, including the below:

- Since Costolo took over the CEO role, Twitter has grown to 500 million users sending over 350 million tweets per day.
- During the World Cup in summer 2010, Twitter was seeing 3,000 tweets per second, and was sweating the system crashes. Recently, it saw 12,000-15,000+ tweets on Election Day in the U.S.
- When the TV show The X-Factor (U.K.) put a hashtag on the screen, it generated 27,000 tweets in 90 seconds.
-Twitter is working with the Japanese government on a “lifeline project” which includes things like making lists of government agencies on Twitter that people can follow in the wake of a disaster or emergency. The project will be expanded to all of Twitter’s markets, with the U.K. and Spain indicating interest already.
- Twitter hands over every government request for the take-down of tweets to the website Chilling Effects....
- The service will “never change” its 140-character limit....

Link building is easily the most groaned about aspect of SEO. It's hard, it's rarely scalable, it takes a ridiculous amount of time, and frankly, our lives would all be better without it.

Unfortunately, link building will always be a part of SEO, no matter how much we complain about it. Still, you have to change the way you think about it, and this past week at SES Chicago, I didn't speak on link building: I spoke on relationship building.

In my session, I talked about how you can use social media instead of email to start building that relationship with people. Twitter is one the easiest mediums for that, and with it comes a host of tools that you can use to help you search, qualify, and contact influencers in your niche. Here's that list of tools...

The Twitter Redesign We Would All Love To See | Simply Zesty

The Twitter Redesign We Would All Love To See | Simply Zesty | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Considering how Twitter's main site has seemed to regress in recent times and greater attention has been placed on the mobile app, we've decided to give the site a makeover and show how the site can be improved...

We understand that Twitter is designed more for mobile, but considering how neglected its desktop site feels – and especially since it is its main source of revenue – we decided to take matters into our own hands and present our vision of how Twitter should look and feel.

The Aim

Before starting the redesign, it was important to look at what Twitter does right first and incorporate those features into the new look. For one, its simplicity is its greatest strength, and so the overall aim was to evolve the platform instead of creating an entirely new interface from scratch.

While it’s very tempting to fill the entire page with different columns and boxes to give users more features to interact with, doing so would make the page busier, which would compromise the overall experience. Therefore, we limited the design to two columns and placed tweets on the left-hand column to maintain consistency....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Wow. Just wow! I hope Twitter is watching. This is a wonderful and whimsical "what if?" redesign of our favorite social media channel from the very creative folks at Simply Zesty...

Watch Out CNN: New Twitter Search Capabilities Will Rule Breaking News | ReadWrite | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
If Twitter can now assemble the raw materials of news into a meaningful place to see and understand what's happening anywhere in the world, on any topic, the instant it starts to matter, why would anyone get breaking news from another source?

Twitter Tuesday announced new search capabilities that give it the upper hand as a breaking news destination over basically every other news organization on the planet, from newspapers to cable networks to websites and everything in between.

When a new search begins to trend on Twitter, Twitter's new API will send the query toAmazon's Mechanical Turk service, where humans will categorize it to help make it more relevant to readers. Then Twitter can populate its Discover section with live, topical streams of news.

If they want to keep up, other organizations that exist to break news need some new ideas, and fast...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

This is BIG NEWS for big news organizations if you catch Jon Mitchell's drift. Maybe even a game changer for Twitter too.

When Is The Best Time To Post To Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest And Google+? | AllTwitter | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

...So, when is the best time to post? And is it the same for every social network?

RadiumOne’s Po.st examined the social sharing data from more than 10,000 publishers, reaching four main conclusions:

1. There are two peak sharing times during the day – 10 a.m. through noon and 8 p.m. through 10 p.m.
2. If you’re looking for clicks, the worst time to share an article is between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
3. Sharing and clickbacks remain consistent from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
4. The hours between noon and 2 p.m. see the most shares with the highest clickback rates.

The study also revealed a disconnect between the best times to post to each social network, which are as follows:

Twitter: 1 p.m.
Facebook: 5 p.m.
Pinterest: 11 p.m.
Google+: 10 a.m.

How To Find People To Follow On Twitter | Sean Clark

How To Find People To Follow On Twitter | Sean Clark | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Finding the right people to follow on Twitter is a bit like creating your own club.

You want to make sure you choose the right people to become members. Then you need to start engaging with them so they feel welcome and help your club grow.

Once you’ve built up trust and relationships with them they’re more likely to accept you and extend your reach by sharing your content and introducing you to others.

Finding The Right People
Using Twitter Search can be a bit hit and miss when to comes to finding choosing the right people to follow. Although the advanced search allows you to search using many filters keyword, hashtag, location and even sentiment, the information in the returned results is relatively thin. You’ll get to see their bio, profile image and if you click on their name the number of followers and a handful of Tweets.

That’s why the service from Twtrland is bit more useful....
