After SEC Decision, Bloomberg Integrates Tweets Into the Wire | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Trading at the speed of tweets.... Wall Street operates at twitch-level speed, trading stocks on information the moment it comes in over the wire. So it sorta makes sense that Bloomberg, one of the world’s largest providers of financial information, will soon incorporate Twitter, the real-time information service used by 200 million people around the world, into Bloomberg’s international information platform....

5 Tools to Research the Demographics of Your Twitter Followers | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Included are some great apps that will let you get the proper stats to start engaging your Twitter followers in a real and very dynamic way.... Many of us find ourselves with a bit of a problem. We have plenty of followers on our Twitter accounts, and yet we are getting next to no retweets, mentions or overall benefits from those followers. Because of that, many people think that the whole Twitter marketing thing is all hype. After all, they seem to be doing everything right but they have nothing to show for it except for a lot of wasted time, and more aggravation than it was worth. Of course, interaction is not easy to build. Many people give up earlier than achieving it. One of the first steps to take: Learn more about your followers. For those who are experiencing the same problem as I described above, below are some great apps that will let you get the proper stats to start engaging your followers in a real and dynamic way....

HubSpot Makes Twitter Analytics Easier With RetweetLab Tool

HubSpot Makes Twitter Analytics Easier With RetweetLab Tool | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

HubSpot, a marketing software company founded at MIT in 2006, has revealed a brand-new analytics tool that could help companies more effectively use Twitter for branding or promotional purposes.

...Retweet Lab's data is simple to use and surprisingly powerful. For example, in my case it revealed that I get the most retweets at around 7 p.m., even tough I usually tweet the most at 9 a.m. Thanks to the Retweet Lab data, I can now start tweeting more around 7 p.m. and in theory improve my Twitter influence. Similarly, the tool notes that tweets without "calls for action," such as "please tweet this," are infinitely more effective at generating retweets than ones that include such pleas. While this sort of information is useful for my own personal "brand," it's much more likely to be useful for bigger publishers or well-known brands....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

I can't say enough about the ReTweet Lab tool. You MUST test drive it. Powerful insight.

Twitter Reaction to Events Often at Odds with Overall Public Opinion | Pew Research

Twitter Reaction to Events Often at Odds with Overall Public Opinion | Pew Research | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

...The lack of consistent correspondence between Twitter reaction and public opinion is partly a reflection of the fact that those who get news on Twitter – and particularly those who tweet news – are very different demographically from the public.

The overall reach of Twitter is modest. In the Pew Research Center’s 2012 biennial news consumption survey, just 13% of adults said they ever use Twitter or read Twitter messages; only 3% said they regularly or sometimes tweet or retweet news or news headlines on Twitter.

Twitter users are not representative of the public. Most notably, Twitter users are considerably younger than the general public and more likely to be Democrats or lean toward the Democratic Party. In the 2012 news consumption survey, half (50%) of adults who said they posted news on Twitter were younger than 30, compared with 23% of all adults. And 57% of those who posted news on Twitter were either Democrats or leaned Democratic, compared with 46% of the general public. (Another recent Pew Research Center survey provides even more detail on who uses Twitter and other social media.)...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

This Pew research is worth reading for marketers, PR and public affairs pros. A great reminder about our social media and Twitter assumptions.

Science reveals what really increases Twitter followers | Poynter

Science reveals what really increases Twitter followers | Poynter | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

The world of science has some new advice for people who want to increase their Twitter following, and it may sound something your mother used to say: If you don’t have anything nice to tweet, don’t tweet at all.

“Expressing negative sentiments in tweets is the second most harmful factor to growing a Twitter audience,” say researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology. They speculate about why: “This might be because Twitter is a medium dominated by very weak social ties, and negative sentiment from strangers may be unpleasant or uncomfortable for a potential new follower to see.”...

The pope’s 5 most popular tweets | MarketWatch | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

When the pope retires, his Twitter account will be smashed along with his papal ring, Vatican Radio announced Friday. His account, @Pontifex, garnered nearly 1.6 million followers since he sent his first tweet in December. Until 1842, the papal ring was used to seal official documents — and destroyed in the presence of senior Vatican officials to prevent it from being used to seal forged ones. The Twitter account is being deleted for similar reasons, in light of the recent account-hacking incidents. Before @pontifex is deleted, we revisit some of Pope Benedict’s most retweeted missives....

@sree, @jasonfalls, @prtini, @shonali, @jaybaer, @peterhimler, @laermer and @prsarahevans are some of the top social media, PR and journalism experts to follow on Twitter…. but who do they follow? Last week at a Cision “Behind the Story” breakfast panel, Sree Sreenivasan was discussing how PR pros and journalists interact on Twitter and said, “I find PR people (and journalists) are generally using Twitter poorly. Some of them use it very well and those are the ones that succeed. The best PR people I work with are the ones who are connected, not because of Twitter, but because they read a lot, know the issues and have a great rolodex.” He challenged the panelists to identify some great PR pros on Twitter, people who are “doing it right.” In addition to the panel’s recommendations (I’ve included Sree’s below), I asked some industry experts – and my personal favorites to follow on Twitter – who in PR they thought did it right on Twitter. On the social web we live on a diet of fast change and rapid media evolution. New research study identifies Twitter Tribes by unique words

As a Twitter power user, I couldn’t resist looking into this Twitter research study on word usage in my favorite micropublishing channel. It’s fascinating to say the least.

It’s titled "Word usage mirrors community structure in the online social network Twitter." Researchers looked at more than 250,000 users to define some very interesting Tribes.

Burger King’s Social Media Crisis & Failure to Effectively Communicate

Burger King’s Social Media Crisis & Failure to Effectively Communicate | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

In 2013 there is no excuse for such failed crisis communications. Any and every company should be ready to make a public statement on any crisis in one hour or less. It is good public relations; it is good media relations; it is good crisis communication; it is good social media crisis communication.

So here it is on Monday afternoon, February 18, 2013 as I sit in my office near New Orleans and Burger King’s Twitter account was hacked nearly 4 hours ago. The hackers make it look like a McDonald’s account.

Burger King eventually managed to get Twitter to suspend the account and pull down the content and ugly comments.

But in the 140-character world of fast news, the fast food company is SLOW to officially issue a statement....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

It was the President's holiday. No one's lives were at risk. I'm not sure Burger King to respond to but they could have used social media better to moderate the impact. Personally, a sense of humor could also be valuable in rebalancing the impact of their Twitter account hijacking.
