How The Grid Will Automate Web Design Without Killing The Designer

How The Grid Will Automate Web Design Without Killing The Designer | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Can you replace a human designer with artificial intelligence and machine learning? That's the question, more or less, which will likely plague The Grid long after the company launches its new website creation and hosting platform.

The Grid’s sales pitch is that creating a beautiful looking website geared towards your intentions shouldn't be harder than giving it content—images, videos, and text. But it also wants to be able to respond to your shifting demands. Want more people to share your content on social networks? You can indicate that's one of your goals and the site will adjust accordingly....

How to Remove Photo Backgrounds in Photoshop or PowerPoint

How to Remove Photo Backgrounds in Photoshop or PowerPoint | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

You know what one of my biggest design pet peeves is? When I'm trying to design something, but there's an unwanted background on the image I'm using. Either I want to remove the photo background altogether, or I prefer a transparent background so the image assumes the look of any other background I put behind it.

Take the image on the left above, which is from our free, downloadable collection of holiday stock photos. That image would be so much more useful to my call-to-action, SlideShare presentation, blog post, or ebook if I could just remove that pesky background so it looked like the image on the right. Or maybe you've downloaded another one of our collections offree stock photos that could also use a transparent background.

Luckily, there is something you can do about it. Using either Photoshop or PowerPoint, you can easily remove the background of your photo or image in no time. And I'm going to show you exactly how to do it. First, grab an image to practice with....

Albert Einstein's Handwriting Is Now A Font

Albert Einstein's Handwriting Is Now A Font | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

E=MC^2. It's not just a fascinating equation, it was written in a fascinating hand. The handwriting of Albert Einstein, the legendary German theoretical physicist, was unique: a wondrous calligraphy that borrowed elements from both the Latin and Kurrent, an old form of German handwriting based on late medieval cursive.

Now, thanks to German typographer Harald Geisler, Einstein's handwriting is becoming a font.Geisler is no stranger to the pages of Co.Design. The designer is the creator of a beautiful typographic calendar made up of 2,015 typewriter keys, and successfully crowdfunded an effort to digitize Sigmund Freud's handwriting in 2013....

Steve Quartz: the neuroscientist who studies what's 'cool' and why

Steve Quartz: the neuroscientist who studies what's 'cool' and why | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Certain aspects of coolness, Quartz and Asp argue, reside in an identifiable part of the brain. “Specifically, we found that buying a desirable item or even finding a retro t-shirt in a thrift store impacts a part of the brain known as the medial prefrontal cortex,” Quartz said.

Put simply: cool things activate a pleasure center in the brain. “The concept of cool isn’t that complicated,” Quartz said. “But it’s interesting to look at how it gets played out. Cool is a social attribute, and as we dug into it, we saw that the concept has changed over the last forty or fifty years, from opposition and rebellion in the 1950s to today, where it is much more of a pro-social idea.”...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

We think of cool as ephemeral, a moving target. But a California neuroscientist and author of a new book on ‘neuromarketing’ says he’s got it down to a science.

The 10 Most Watched Ads on YouTube in March

The 10 Most Watched Ads on YouTube in March | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Public service advertising doesn't often go viral (indeed, PSAs rarely appear on Google and Adweek's monthly leaderboard of the most-watched ads on YouTube). But the Ad Council knocked it out of the park last month—notching almost 50 million views (it has since topped that) for the R/GA-produced "Love Has No Labels" spot.

Samsung, which often dominates the leaderboard, placed another two spots in March, battling Durex's "#Connect" ad for the No. 2 slot.

Elsewhere, Geico's unskippable pre-roll ads proved to be just that, as the family-dinner ad got more than 5 million views. And YouTube itself placed two spots on the March list, for one of its #DearMe spots and for YouTube Music Awards welcome video.

See all 10 spots below....
