What If the New York Times Ended Its Daily Print Edition? | Mediashift

What If the New York Times Ended Its Daily Print Edition? | Mediashift | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Stop the presses! For six days a week! Yes, I m being serious.

...

I’m going to share a “strategic foresight” (also called “future studies”) exercise with you: a “Futures Wheel” that I created which examines how a particular change might play out. In this case, the hypothetical change is for the New York Times to at some point in the near future stop printing and delivering daily printed newspapers (but retain its Sunday print edition) and focus most of its resources on digital products and services.

Here’s the futures wheel for the no-more-daily-print-edition New York Times. Start at the middle (black box, the proposed change) and go out in spokes to see the various first- and second-level consequences that this change likely will have. Green indicates positive elements likely to gain revenue; red indicates where revenue and/or jobs are likely to be lost. Let’s discuss it after you’ve had a chance to look over it. (Also know that a “futures wheel” is one of many tools in the foresight professional/futurist’s bag. It’s useful in this case to think through the consequences of a significant organizational change.)...

How To Create Content for Internet "Scanners" Instead of "Readers" | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Creating premium content for internet scanners and readers requires creating content differently.

Calling all scanners, calling all scanners! I know you are out there and I know you are guilty of scanning content rather than reading it thoroughly. And you know what...that’s OK! Study Finds Americans Lead World In Ability To Justify Unnecessary Purchases

Study Finds Americans Lead World In Ability To Justify Unnecessary Purchases | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

NEW YORK—A study published Thursday by the McKinsey Global Institute confirmed that American citizens lead the world in the ability to justify needless purchases, a finding that extended across all consumer categories, from electronics, to food items, to motor vehicles.

“When it comes to rationalizing a third flatscreen television, defending the bulk purchase of sale items, inventing reasons to upgrade a cable package, and categorizing any purchase as an ‘investment,’ we discovered that consumers in the U.S. are more than five times as proficient as their counterparts in other countries,” said researcher Peter Cahill, citing the roughly $100 billion per year that Americans justify spending on cell phones that are less than a year newer than their existing model, shoes with pockets for each toe, brand-name allergy medicine, in-home soda machines, apps, coconut water, collector’s edition DVDs, and thousands of other goods and services....

How a Tiny Startup Used Reddit to Build an Army of 1,400 Ambassadors (and How You Can Too) - Zapier | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Pushbullet started as simple app for taking advantage of the rich notification functionality that came out on Android in late 2012. The company’s founder, Ryan Oldenburg, realized that his notification tray could be much more useful if notifications could actually come with some text or imagery. It would allow you to get to needed information faster.

The Google Play Store shows it’s an app with over 500,000 installs so far and more than 40,000 people have given it ratings, with an average score of 4.6 stars out of 5. It’s also on iOS, if you’re an Apple user. There’s another statistic that’s neither present in the Play Store or App Store, however, but it’s been equally important for the company: 1,420

1,420 is the number of Pushbullet users who have joined its subreddit,/r/Pushbullet.

“Every app tends to attract ambassadors and I think the people on our subreddit are ambassadors,” Oldenburg told us....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

A smart social marketing strategy pays off on Reddit for startup Pushbullet. And you can replicate it.

Google and Ogilvy research finds word of mouth had biggest impact on purchase decisions (not media) | Campaign@Cannes | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Consumers are more influenced by word of mouth in buying decisions than by print media, TV and movies, brand websites and even social media. The six-month survey of 2,458 recent purchasers of auto vehicles, beauty products and smartphones found that word of mouth topped the influence list.

Top ten points of influence:

  • Word of mouth (74%)
  • Retailers and store visits (69%)
  • You Tube – how-to videos, product visualisation, entertainment (64%)
  • Twitter (61%)
  • Company/brand websites (59%)
  • Facebook (56%)
  • Pinterest (56%)
  • Newspapers and magazines (55%)
  • TV and movies (51%)
  • Search (51%).

The study – revealed at the Google Beach Pavilion in Cannes – notes that consumers now make purchasing decisions in the same way they consume content – with the purpose of choosing brands that engage their passion and interests....

Just a Single Page Website: 3 Reasons Why It Can Work For Your Idea

Just a Single Page Website: 3 Reasons Why It Can Work For Your Idea | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

...Another concept which is being heavily challenged by the rise of the touch-screen device is traditional menu and multiple-page based website design. Given that a significant amount of web browsing is done on screens of ever shrinking sizes, this doesn’t really work as well as it used to.

Enter The Single Page Layout

The single page layout is one which eschews having multiple pages, each encapsulating a piece of text or some media. Instead, we use a single continuous page which contains absolutely everything.

This design paradigm has found countless fans within the web developer community, and has found itself used in a variety of settings, including marketing pages and personal portfolios. This adulation has had the effect of spawning countless Javascript libraries, which make it easy to create single page websites (of which my favorite is  fullPage.js). But why? What makes this paradigm work? Here are three reasons why....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Good rationale for single page sites.

A Scientific Guide to Hashtags: How Many, Which Ones, and Where to Use Them | Social Media Today | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Internet language has evolved considerably over the past few years as social media has taken off. Hashtags are a huge part of this evolution. What once was a telephone button is now a social media phenomenon.  No wonder people are curious.

When they ask, I tell them that hashtags are a pound sign immediately followed by a keyword. They're used for categorization on social media. Yes, they can be annoying if overused. And yes, I've seen the hashtag video of Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake.

Hashtags also have the potential to be truly valuable. The stats and info below make a pretty clear case that we should be understanding, using, and appreciating hashtags....
