List Beats Grid: Linear Feeds Perform Two to Three Times Better Than Grids | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Many content-centric products have been moving to a magazine or card style layout, popularized by apps like Flipboard and Pinterest. Both Flipboard and Pinterest are beautifully designed products, but our studies indicate multi-item-per-row grid layouts deliver inferior results to single-item-per-row list layouts for our particular design problem.

These relative results may be unique to us, but we nevertheless publish them here in case they may be relevant to others considering the tradeoffs involved in list vs. grid designs....

A Growing Number of E-Commerce Sites Are Moving Into Print | AdWeek | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Ask any lifestyle magazine publisher how they’re making up for declining print revenue, and chances are they’ll mention e-commerce. But while countless publishers are struggling to drive dollars via online shopping, there’s a growing number of e-commerce companies moving in the opposite direction.

In recent months, customers of online-only retailers like Rent the Runway, JackThreads and Birchbox have received catalogs—yes, those old-school, printed booklets—in their mailboxes, while flash sale site One Kings Lane has been sending out “magalogs” combining decorating tips with photographs of rooms populated by the site’s ever-changing inventory....

Here’s Why The TedX Speaker Who Said “Content Is Worthless” Is Wrong

Here’s Why The TedX Speaker Who Said “Content Is Worthless” Is Wrong | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Music producer Brian McTear was one of the speakers at this past Friday’s TedXPhiladelphia event and he made headlines by proclaiming “Your content is worthless.” Obviously, he’s wrong – in fact McTear’s own experience demonstrates the worth of content, and is a valuable lesson for content marketers.

Riffing off the “content is king” cliché, McTear said “community is king.” However, it should be obvious that there is no community without content; people won’t come together if they don’t have information to share. While it’s true that just having content is no longer enough, it still needs to be the baseline of attracting and engaging the community. It is true that McTear’s content  – music – is “worth less” than it used to be; but that doesn’t make it worthless. It just means he needs to explore new models to make his organization viable in the marketplace....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Good explanation of content marketing's value despite the speaker's linkbait.

Intriguing study reveals the secrets of successful infographics

Intriguing study reveals the secrets of successful infographics | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
What makes an infographic successful? As designers, we want it to achieve a balance of two main things: Did the reader get the message we wanted them to get?

...To the surprise of the researchers, bar graphs and charts did poorly. It turns out (news flash) they all kinda look the same. The most memorable images contained “human recognizable objects.” Think mundane stuff like photos or illustrations of bottles, animals and shoes, not to mention people.

Other important points:

  1. Color made a huge difference: the more, the better.
  2. Images with more clutter were highly memorable. How much more memorable? A lot.
  3. Images with lots of circles and rounded corner graphics also ranked high.

How B2B Buyers Use Content Throughout the Purchase Decision Funnel - Corporate Eye

How B2B Buyers Use Content Throughout the Purchase Decision Funnel - Corporate Eye | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

For B2B buyers, brand content and third-party content play critical roles in helping them make purchase decisions.

Throughout the purchase cycle, B2B buyers at all levels within the organization consume, share, and discuss both brand content and third-party content and rely heavily on it for vendor selection and product and services selection.

A new study from Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Council and NetLine Corporation found that online content is highly influential for B2B buyers. The study surveyed executives from 30 different industries and found that three needs drive B2B buyers to actively seek out content to support specific decisions.

Nearly two out of three B2B buyers (62%) seek out content to learn about new market developments and industry practices, while nearly the same number of people (60%) seek out content to discover new solutions that could address specific needs. Just over one in two B2B buyers (52%) seek out content to address a project that is already in progress (or about to commence) for their companies....

5 Content Distribution Channels You Might Be Overlooking | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

The challenge with content marketing is the competition for eyeballs. Content marketing programs need more than blogs, infographics, and videos to take off.

Marketers are making significant investments in content marketing, and rightfully so. According to Rishi Dave, chief marketing officer at Dun & Bradstreet, today’s consumers are entirely self-directed in their buying journeys. Content helps empower these audiences to make educated and informed decisions.

The challenge with content marketing, however, is exactly what makes it awesome. The competition for eyeballs is fierce. Not to mention, human attention spans are getting shorter.

According to one Web use study, the average attention span in 2012 was eight seconds. Even goldfish are easier to engage. Their attention spans? Nine seconds....
