British Airways Flying the Flag for Content - Silverbean Blog

British Airways Flying the Flag for Content - Silverbean Blog | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

It stands to reason that few other industries place as much emphasis on the “customer journey” as Travel and Leisure. At a recent ABTA meeting, the chairman of the Thomas Cook digital advisory board claimed that attracting people to visit websites is not the biggest issue facing brands – converting them into customers once they’ve arrived is. He cited an average transactional rate of just 3%. This view was echoed by Google, which pointed out that the buying process for holidays is among the most elongated, since they can be such emotional experiences.

How to improve conversion rates? The first thing to recognise is that with people now accessing content across multiple platforms and devices, brands need to ensure what they’re producing is finding their customers in the right place at the right time.

British Airways offers a superb example of a brand fully embracing the multi-channel approach, and assembling high-quality content to fit....

Custom 3D-printed kayak is a homemade work of art

Custom 3D-printed kayak is a homemade work of art | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

A specially modified home-built 3D printer cranks out an entire colorful kayak over the course of over 1,000 hours of printing time.

It took a lot of patience to print this kayak.

Jim Smith is an ambitious man. He not only built himself a large 3D printer, he also decided to have it make him a kayak. It appears to be the world's first 3D-printed kayak, and it's a stunner.

The kayak's multi-colored patchwork design looks like it would appeal to Colin Baker's version of "Doctor Who." The boat consists of 28 parts printed using ABS plastic. The materials to produce the nearly 17-foot-long kayak with a 6mm-thick hull cost around $500, according to Smith. The whole contraption weighs nearly 65 pounds, which is pretty much in line with the weight of a regular kayak....

The colossal arrogance of Newsweek’s Bitcoin “scoop”

The colossal arrogance of Newsweek’s Bitcoin “scoop” | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

WIthout more evidence, it's time for a retraction....

...The problem with the story is that it doesn't appear to be true. Dorian Nakamoto—who hasn’t gone by the name “Satoshi” in almost 40 years—made the second of two very public denials this week. “I got nothing to do with it,” Nakamoto said during his first denial, a two-hour interview with the Associated Press.

Goodman’s story looks like a scientific experiment gone bad: it can’t be replicated. It’s grounded in assumptions, topped with myths and stereotypes, and then backed up by an arrogant-sounding “trust us” defense.

The AP video shows a man who appears wholly convincing. “The main reason I’m here is to clear my name, that I have nothing to do with Bitcoin,” Nakamoto said. “Leah wrote all that?” he added with a shake of his head, incredulous. If Dorian Nakamoto is the hidden genius behind Bitcoin, he's also one of history’s most skilled liars; his impression of “unemployed suburban man” was spot-on....

Seth Godin: What Marketers Are Getting Wrong

The marketing expert shares how companies can change their tactics to get customers' attention more effectively.

Seth Godin: The Internet is the first medium invented in 100 years that wasn't invented to make advertisers happy. The connection between running ads and making money is broken, probably forever. As soon as you take that out of the equation, everything we understand about marketing, manufacturing, distribution--it all goes away. The new era of modern marketing is about the connection economy, it's about trust, it's about awareness, it's about the fact that attention is worth way more than it used to be. 16 Humiliating and Hilarious Food and Drink Product Fails

16 Humiliating and Hilarious Food and Drink Product Fails | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

From purple ketchup to baby food for adults, these brand extensions were nothing short of miserable failures.

Brand extensions, or when a company rolls out a new product that’s still connected to their core brand, are a mainstay of the food product industry. Most are well-thought-out, field tested, and happen to make a lot of sense: Oscar Mayer’s known for its lunch meat, so why not buy little rounds of their turkey, with cheese, crackers, a drink, and dessert, all packaged up in a tidy box? Lunchables were a hit when they were rolled out in 1988 for that very reason: it made sense, and parents trusted that the brand would be able to provide a decent, complete lunch for their kid.

However, while the brand extensions we’ll be taking a look at today might have made sense to some exhausted brand development executive somewhere, they certainly weren't hits with the general public....

This belongs in the "What were they thinking?" marketing file. Enjoy!

Why 2014 is crunch time for video content marketing

Why 2014 is crunch time for video content marketing | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

So why has 2014 become a make-or-break period for content marketing?Content is your first, second and third sales call.

For today’s consumer, a purchase journey no longer automatically begins in a physical store, or with a direct conversation with a brand representative.

Our lives may be getting busier, but we’re consuming more content than ever before, and it’s transformed us into self-directed buyers making purchase decisions informed by our own extensive online research. As such, content is now every brand’s first call (and often their second and third)and naturally it is under greater pressure to drive impact.

Enter video, an unmatched medium for both educating and storytelling, and one which is proving to play a highly valuable role in the content marketing mix, thanks to its suitability for social sharing and ability to win consumer attention (and, ultimately, to deliver solid ROI)...

The technologies of public relations are on their way.... | ZDNet

The technologies of public relations are on their way.... | ZDNet | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

...PR needs to figure out how to automate some of its capabilities and keep up with the changing trends affecting their clients. The major trend is in helping companies become media companies simply because there are fewer reporters around to help tell the stories of clients.

I’ve worked with Intel on its Intel Free Press and other media projects, for example. And PR firms need to do the same, help every company to be a media company and how best to use the media technologies available....

But the publishing, etc, is not enough. There needs to be a large technology component inside the future successful PR firm. It needs technologies of promotion that can scale the work of its practitioners in the service of its clients....

Review and comment on the launch of Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight.com for ESPN. » Pressthink

...For a lot of people in journalism, “big talk” and launch manifestos are on their face ridiculous. What matters is the work you can publish and defend. No one needs to know about your grand intentions. Let the journalism carry the message. It will anyway!

That view has a healthy constituency in newsland and after my first five months as a part-time adviser to Omidyar’s First Look, the wisdom in it is… a lot clearer. But Ben Wallace is right, too. There are thousands and thousands of journalists (and young people hungry to be journalists) who know that the news industry is going to be smaller in the years ahead, but it can be way, way smarter. And make better products....
