We've also looked at how our mobile phones are becoming more instrumental to news gathering, and how the audience's appetite for news on mobile has had an impact on storytelling formats and the ways newsrooms approach video, for example.

To help you get up to speed for the start of 2015, here's a round-up of some of the tools, tips and resources the Journalism.co.uk team has compiled this past year.

STUDY: Journalists Need PR Now More Than Ever - PRNewser

STUDY: Journalists Need PR Now More Than Ever - PRNewser | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Encouraging headline, no? This new paper comes from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford, UK, and we have so many mixed feelings about it right now.

Everyone knows that the PR-to-journalist ratio grows more lopsided by the day, but this study’s findings confirm that the power shift goes deeper than that.

In short, “hacks” need “flacks” more and more whether they want to admit it or not. The reverse isn’t really true, though, so the dude in the image above might want to pour himself another stiff one…
Jeff Domansky's insight:

While the premise is that hacks need flacks, social media may get to the point where clients don't need flacks. Interesting to ponder.

How to Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile for Social Selling [Infographic]

How to Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile for Social Selling [Infographic] | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Social selling is part activity, part reputation. If you're writing insightful comments on your prospects' blogs, responding to their tweets, and liking their shared content, you've got the activity bit down pat. But if your LinkedIn profile doesn't include your three jobs and features a cropped picture of you from prom, you can't really call yourself a social seller.

If you'd like to start a social selling initiative in earnest, then begin by revamping your LinkedIn profile. Just as you're researching potential buyers on LinkedIn to learn more about them, they're looking at your profile to judge whether they want to do business with you. Don't ruin great messaging and positive interactions with an outdated, sparse, or inappropriate profile.

So, what exactly should your LinkedIn profile look like? We've put together an infographic that breaks down the ideal social selling LinkedIn profile, section by section. Stride into 2015 with social selling style.

What distinguishes content marketing from brand journalism?

What distinguishes content marketing from brand journalism? | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Today's fragmented media landscape and information-loaded digital world offer brands new opportunities to communicate directly with their audiences—building visibility, affinity and even search traction along the way.

However, success in the uppermost reaches of the funnel requires organizations to put the corporate agenda in the back seat, adopting instead a more journalistic approach to crafting and publishing their stories.

Enter brand journalism.

Not to be confused with content marketing, brand journalism is an upper-funnel tactic that delivers more than mere brand awareness. Telling the brand's stories in a compelling, audience-focused way can create affinity, earn media coverage, build brand credibility and (when coupled with search and social strategies) deliver long-lasting online visibility.
Jeff Domansky's insight:

Confused? This article may help you understand the differences between content marketing and brand journalism.

The 6 Worst Press-Release Topics That Startups Pitch

A lot of businesspeople wonder why a certain press release fell flat. Nine times out of 10, the answer is quite simple: It didn't highlight any news.

Rebecca Lynch's curator insight, December 9, 2014 8:44 PM

An aspect of branding that is often overlooked is consistency in imaging. The same colors, fonts, and style of images should by synonymous between a customer seeing products in a store and browsing that company's Facebook page. This article points out minute details that create that consistency. Everything should connect together through common factors, such as filters or color. The layouts section is really interesting. Businesses can signal a sale by the layout of the image alone. This is a powerful technique to be noticed in today's market where people scroll through their feeds extremely quickly. Choosing images is also an important consideration. Rather than just straight promotion, companies should show their products in action and share other images that support the brand personality and product/service purpose.
