Human Media: The Newest Frontier

Human Media: The Newest Frontier | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

First, there was the internet. Then, social media came along. Now, the newest untamed frontier is ‘human media.’ That is to say, human media is a closer, more personal form of social media, but where people communicate face to face, as opposed to communicating through text. And more and more people and businesses are starting to realize just how big human media is and is going to be. What Is Human Media? Human media connects people more intimately than regular social media sites. Through platforms like Google+, and using tools like G+ Hangouts, people and businesses are able to defy geographic distances to talk face to face. The entire world is at your disposal, as you can join or watch Hangouts in an infinite number of topics. You can join or watch Hangouts that are cooking lessons, virtual knitting circles, financial advice, DIY projects, medical care, and so much more. If you can think of it, a G+ Hangout can be done on it....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Got Google+ Hangouts? You may want to consider integrating them enter your social media and social marketing campaigns.

Here's What You Really Need To Know About Google News' Patent | Forbes

Here's What You Really Need To Know About Google News' Patent | Forbes | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Back in December, Google News was granted its second continuation patent in ten years, giving the layman some insight into the search giant’s algorithm, and how it chooses which articles to feature.

...The Claims section of the latest version of Google News’ patent shows a shift away from the traditional signals of a news source’s importance. Now rather than where a story is being reported, it is how a story is being reported both online and off that makes a difference in terms of ranking.

These signals, per the patent, include:

- How quickly an event happened before publication of an article about it took place,

- The “usage pattern regarding traffic associated with the source” means that the search engine is looking at things such as how many people click upon a link to specific articles from the source, monitoring traffic to articles from a source to see how often people click (or don’t click) on links to particular articles from individual sources.

They tell us in the patent: “Well known sites, such as CNN, tend to be preferred to less popular sites, such as Unknown Town News, which users may avoid. The traffic measured may be normalized by the number of opportunities readers had of visiting the link to avoid biasing the measure due to the ranking preferences of the news search engine.”...

What the Death of Google Reader REALLY Means | HubSpot

What the Death of Google Reader REALLY Means | HubSpot | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

...The fact of the matter is, the way people consume information has fundamentally changed. And to tell you the truth, RSS readers were never going to be a mainstream tool for information consumption. Instead, they were a bridge technology -- a hold out until the social and mobile infrastructure could allow for a better set of tools.

The death of Google Reader isn't just about the retirement of yet another Google tool -- it represents a much larger shift in how people are consuming news and information. Information in a Social World The move by Google makes a lot of sense. While Google cited a decline in usage as the reason for Google Reader's retirement, it's pretty clear to us that if Google was ever going to make Google+ a success, it had to send Google Reader packing.

Although Google had previously gone through a period in which it created a seemingly endless flow of consumer applications and waited to see what stuck (anyone remember Google Wave?), now the search engine giant is reducing its products to a core list. And Google really needs Google+ to succeed for it to continue to evolve search in the long-term.

Today, the social graph is the killer app in information discovery. You know, like, and trust your social connections, and now you depend on them for information discovery. Although Google Reader served as one of the first news feeds for people to consume information, it has since been replaced by every social network that has its own news feed -- which enables you to discover new information in a way Google Reader never could....

HubSpot shares an interestesting POV on RSS demise.

What would the perfect news application designed for Google Glass look like?

What would the perfect news application designed for Google Glass look like? | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Devices like Google Glass are going to change the way that we consume the news and other information — how will media companies have to change the way they think about the news and how it is constructed?

To say there’s a lot of debate about the “wearable technology” known as Google Glass would be an understatement. Some enthusiasts see it as the future of mobile man-machine interfaces, while others say it is more likely to be the new Apple Newton — in other words, a widely-hyped product that will ultimately fail. But let’s assume some form of head-mounted display becomes commonplace: how will it change the way we consume content, and how will news outlets of all kinds have to change the way they think about what they do?

I’m a Google Glass skeptic and think it’ll be the next Apple Newton | @andrewchen

I’m a Google Glass skeptic and think it’ll be the next Apple Newton | @andrewchen | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Recently I tweeted the following: i’m a google glass skeptic. Who’s with me?

Turns out most people think Google Glass is going to be awesome. Frankly, I was surprised- I figured it would be more balanced.

But it turns out that people are more excited about the idea of Glass than any particular use case. And I’m excited about the product category too, but think the v1 might suck.

Google Glass is the new Apple Newton.

One day wearable computing glasses may turn out awesome, but I’m convinced that the Google Glass will be like the Apple Newton- a visionary product well ahead of its time, and maybe 10 years after its release, someone will figure out how to make it mainstream using a different design....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

I hope Google Glass leads to something fabulous. Like most innovations, the door really is just opening to new possibilities despite a few speed bumps ahead.

Frederic Filloux: A closer look at Google's patent for its news retrieval algorithm reveals a greater than expected emphasis on quality over quantity. Can this bias stay reliable over time?

But how exactly does Google News work? What kind of media does its algorithm favour most? Last week, the search giant updated its patent filing with a new document detailing the 13 metrics it uses to retrieve and rank articles and sources for its news service. (Computerworld unearthed the filing, it's here)....

How To Attack An Internet Marketing Castle - Secret Matrix Shows Even Top Websites Have Weaknesses

How To Attack An Internet Marketing Castle - Secret Matrix Shows Even Top Websites Have Weaknesses | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Even Top Websites Have Strengths and Weaknesses
As a Marketing Director for Atlantic BT I always want to know the same things when a new customer is…

Via Martin (Marty) Smith
Jeff Domansky's insight:

Valuable reading and social marketing analysis from Marty Smith...

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, January 16, 1:08 AM

When new clients come to Atlantic BT we want to know four metrics:

* Traffic Rank.

* Social Following numbers.

* Pages and Inbound Links.

* PageRank (PR) for the home page and top interior page.

I've been an Internet marketer long enough to be able to almost tell a website's entire story from those 4 numbers. Each of these metrics is tied to the other in telling ways.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Top Websites
If you create a matrix of these values for the top websites it are easy to know where even an Apple is strong or weak. Apple has amazing page spread and links, but its traffic position doesn't deserve a PR9.

When you've been playing SEO games for more than 10 years you know Apple's inbound links include .edu links and those are the secret gold of the web. Google values .edu links higher. I just saw a demonstration of this when one of the cancer centers we are working with on Cure Cancer Starter was pulling a PR6 with the least amount of support I've seen.

The difference was in WHO was linking and again it was .edu links that helped the website achieve more than you or I could with the same page spread and inbound link numbers. WHO links to you is very important.

The chart above and on the link shows each website, no matter how all powerful, has areas for improvement. If you are entering a crowded web space do an analysis like this to help determine where to attack existing castles. If you want to attack Apple you would be a fool to attempt to out link them or page spread 'em.

Social would be the right breach weapon to use with Apple. Frankly I wouldn't envy anyone trying to attack Apple, but the point is if Apple has vulnerabilities so do your competitors.

YouTube, Gmail, Google Places are Dead, Long Live Google Plus | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Will Google fold YouTube, Gmail and Places into Google Plus? Suddenly 1.5 billion users on one platform, with Businesses having only one Page to manage. Good or no? Oh, and Google’s Authorship Markup suddenly screws with your SEO (search engine optimisation) and SMO (social media optimisation) in ways that you can only imagine. (Google’s SMO search algorithm) The images show the eery similarity between the rebranding of YouTube into OneChannel and Google Plus. Of course Google Plus could get a new name of OneChannel instead?...

As News Publications Experiment With Sponsored Content, Google Says Keep It Out Of Google News

As News Publications Experiment With Sponsored Content, Google Says Keep It Out Of Google News | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

News publications having “sponsored content “deals are on the rise, and Google’s apparently concerned enough that it’s issued a warning today that publishers should keep such content out of Google News.

In a post today on the Google News blog, the company writes: "If a site mixes news content with affiliate, promotional, advertorial, or marketing materials (for your company or another party), we strongly recommend that you separate non-news content on a different host or directory, block it from being crawled with robots.txt, or create a Google News Sitemap for your news articles only. Otherwise, if we learn of promotional content mixed with news content, we may exclude your entire publication from Google News."

Why such a warning now? Consider this...

With Google Reader Finishing Up, Where Do We Go From Here?

With Google Reader Finishing Up, Where Do We Go From Here? | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

The news that Google will be retiring its Reader service has been met with criticism by many circles. A dedicated fan base has been left out in the cold and have been given three months to now look for an alternative service.

... Before you start looking, you should first download your Google Reader data from Takeout. By following the link here, you can download all your data on a handy xml file. Google says that it should be easily transferable to alternative services, but that really depends on whether said services are allowing users to do this. Some like Feedly already do, but other services will quickly follow suit. Even if you don’t use the file straight away, it’s handy to have for future reference....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

This is very smart advice if you're a Google Reader user. I recommend you follow this advice if you want to preserve your RSS data.

The Brilliant Marketing Of Google Glass: Demand Before Supply | Forbes

The Brilliant Marketing Of Google Glass: Demand Before Supply | Forbes | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Great marketing case study... Most brands struggle to get appropriate attention for their new ideas. Typically, new products have a highly orchestrated PR strategy, calling in favors from influencers and media, and drawing crowds by having The Black Eyed Peas or Pearl Jam play at an event. For Glass, Google took a page from the Apple playbook, and created “demand before supply” by using a more understated strategy centered on exclusivity and community. The Plan: Exclusivity and Community Instead of relying on press, analysts, and influencers tell the story; Google relied on the voices and visions of the market. “Less then 1% of the total buzz was generated by the top 6 press outlets (e.g. Mashable, Laptopmag, etc.), while almost 92% of the traffic was generated on Twitter...

Social Search To Gain 70% of Search by 2013 + Google Becoming Irrelevant | Techvibes

Social Search To Gain 70% of Search by 2013 + Google Becoming Irrelevant | Techvibes | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Marty Smith: "Not sure I would go anywhere near this far (Google being irrelevant) since Google isn't sitting still. CEO of  uber agency WPP just mentioned his company increased their Google spend 17% while flattening out Facebook a week ago on @Squakbox. That said, I do see incursion being made by mobile search, video and social search. The Google castle is in need of defending."

From the original article: "Google’s search marketing services may be becoming irrelevant due to the rise of social search.

That’s in addition to a failure to recognize that Google+ cannot be the sole solution to social search with an always increasing number of web properties.

Info-Tech Research Group expects that Google, which held 90% of the search market in 2010, will only hold 30% in 2013, due to the rising impact of social search".
