When I choose someone new to follow, when I compose a new tweet, when I share and favorite an update, I seldom think about the why. My following sessions would probably seem haphazard to an outsider, and my favoriting technique comes and goes from one strategy to another.

Even so, the way I use Twitter is far less random than I thought. There is science and psychology behind the way we all tweet.

Researchers have discovered trends in the way that we perform every major action on Twitter—favoriting, updating, sharing, and following. And there's even an interesting bit of psychology behind what makes Twitter so attractive in the first place. What spurs us to follow someone on Twitter? Researchers at Georgia Tech and Michigan combined to study the factors involved in following.


The factors they came up with boiled down to three categories: social behaviors, message content, and social network structure. Here are the individual factors for each, starting with social behaviors:

Tweet volumeBurstiness – tweets per hourInteractions – replies, mentions, and favoritesBroadcast communication – the ratio of tweets with no @-mentionTrustworthiness of the profile – How well is the bio filled out? Is there a URL in the profile? Is there a location listed?


The individual factors for message content:

Positive/negative sentimentInformational content – ratio of tweets containing either a URL, RT, MT, HT, or “via”Meformer content – ratio of tweets containing self-referencing pronouns like “I,” “me,” “we,” and “us”Topic focusRetweets – how often your content gets retweetedHashtag usageTReDIX – Tweet Reading Difficulty Index (based on the frequency of real English words longer than 6 letters)


The individual factors in social network structure:

Reciprocity – The number of people you follow who also follow youAttention-status ratio – Total followers compared to total followingNetwork overlap – How similar are the people you follow to those a follower follows

Vine will not be an infinite loop.

It was four years ago this month when Twitter bought Vine for a reported $30 million, but now the relationship has fully withered. On a Medium blog post, Twitter revealed that it's shutting down the looping video app in the coming weeks.

"You'll be able to access and download your Vines," the post read. "We'll be keeping the website online because we think it's important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website."

How long the Vine videos will live on the website is unknown, but creation of the mobile app's six-second clips has already been halted. It's a fairly surprising move....

That's a very surprising move by Twitter – to close down Vine after attracting 200 million users. The problem is, at six seconds, Vines were never long enough and too limited in scope to tell a real story. Twitter is likely to undergo big changes, very quickly in order to survive. The layoffs and live streaming of NFL football are first steps in a new path to the future.

For years, CNN’s news brand has been synonymous with its hosts and anchors. Yet as it’s set up beachheads on the platforms where more and more people consume news, it’s had to leave its broadcast stars on the sidelines: You can get CNN news on Facebook and Snapchat and Twitter, but you won’t get Anderson Cooper or Fareed Zakaria or Erin Burnett.


A week before Election Day, that’s going to change, when it unveils a skill for the Amazon Echo that will give listeners near real-time updates sourced directly from CNN’s broadcast and its anchors (Skills are Amazon’s name for capabilities that third parties like CNN develop for Echo). It’s part of a broader push to optimize CNN’s content for quicker, more efficient distribution across the channels.


“We put a lot of work into ensuring our audience hears our talents’ voices,” said Alex Wellen, CNN’s chief product officer, adding that he wanted the experience of using the new Amazon skill to feel “more chat than bot.”...

News chat anyone? Instead of new briefs read by Alexa or reporters, users can now access the latest summaries from CNN's TV broadcast, which are updated continuously.
